Chapter 123 What if?

Hazel's smile suddenly faltered and she frowned, “But what are you doing here? They will kill you if they get to know who you are. Hannah and the rest have been imprisoned in the pack’s dungeons, it’s not safe for you to walk around like this.”

But, Helen did not have that much worry.

She gave a shake of her head and spoke calmly, “They won’t recognize me and I won’t give them a reason to. Moreover, I am a maid in the mansion now, I finally got accepted after a series of tests. They sure are cautious here, if I had not been careful enough, not only would I not be accepted to work as a maid here, I would have been exposed to.”

She automatically dispelled the scene of meeting Alex, who almost caught her.

Hazel's frown deepened, “But working here as a maid is too risky.”

Helen replied, “Then, seeing you reduced to such a state, you think I won’t take any chance I see to get my revenge?”

Hazel fell silent for a few seconds, before answering in a somewhat guilty tone, “It is my choice.”

And that’s true.

Initially, she accepted to be Damien’s slave because of Hannah and the others, but as time went by, her feelings began to change and she accepted her status beside Damien because she wanted a reason to be closer to him.

So, Hazel felt guilty because she was in love with a man who was the nemesis and the enemy of her people. No matter what direction she thought about it, it felt wrong but there was nothing she could do about it.

A hint of killing intent flashed in Helen’s eyes, “It was never your choice. You were forced to make that decision because of that beast and I will make sure I get our revenge no matter what I have to do.”

Hazel’s heart skipped a bit. She was afraid that Helen would do something to Damien in a fit of rage and by that time, Hazel would lose two people she really cared about.

“Helen, don’t be rash. You can just stay in the mansion using your maid status and find a way to get all his secrets, then you can use it against him.” Hazel said.

That’s all she could do; buy time, until she can convince Helen that Damien was not such a horrible person.

Actually, speaking of that, Hazel had thought about it. Damien was ruthless and cruel, but Hazel realized that he was only like that towards his enemies or to those who threatened his life.

Damien is also a man who doesn’t care much about women, so the fact that he waged war against her pack because she refused him felt too unreal.

Damien was not an irrational person, why would he take most of his men to her pack just to annihilate everyone?

She had seen how Damien protects his own people, she saw how he even gave home to the refugees from his opposing pack, so how could someone like that kill innocent people for no reason?

Surely, there’s something wrong about the whole thing.

Hazel felt that there is a different motive behind that agenda, but she had no idea if she was just thinking too much or finding excuses for Damien’s actions because she was already in love with him.

But for now, the best she could do was to make sure Helen wasn't rash in her decision. She knew how Helen can be whenever she’s angry, so she would make sure her anger and hotheadedness is kept in check.

“Also, do it discreetly. Make sure no one suspects you and make sure no one finds out your true background.” Hazel added and Helen gave an understanding nod.

She had also considered these things, but she was willing to listen to it again, from Hazel.

Then, Hazel grew slightly emotional and pulled Helen towards her for a hug.

“I’m sorry. I couldn’t protect you all, it’s all my fault.” She mumbled quietly, but Helen shook her head.

“How could it be your fault? It is that beast’s fault, he ruined everything and made you like this. But I promise to get you out of here, I promise to avenge all our dead clan members.” Helen made a solemn vow and Hazel just nodded.

Both women shared an emotional moment for a while before Helen finally decided to leave. She had taken too long here and she was afraid she would be questioned by Matilda.

She bid farewell to Hazel and promised to visit her again whenever she gets the chance.

After Helen left, Hazel remained in that position for a long time. Then, she approached her bed and sat at the edge, deep in thought.

What if Damien was really as ruthless as she had initially assumed? Would her feelings for him die down because of that?

What if he wasn’t ruthless and there is a reason? Would her feelings increase for him and would she be willing to be with him then? But wouldn’t her clansmen see her as a traitor by then? Wouldn’t they think that she was attracted to Damien because of his wealth and riches? Wouldn’t they think that she had abandoned them all for a man?

Hazel had a lot of ‘what ifs’ in her mind and none of them made sense.

But she remembered how Damien had protected her all these while. Even though he treats her rudely, he never allowed others to do the same.

He treated her like an equal, and not the slave he claimed she is.

Was that all fake? Was it a pretense to get her to loosen her guard around him so she would tell him the secret behind the gold mine? Was all his kindness for ulterior motives?

And was he only keeping her close because she miraculously could treat his insomnia?

And the biggest and most important question of all, what if she is the only one who feels the way and he never saw her as anything more?
