Blue fire ringed them as Amara stepped closer. Her eyes glowed with a strange light that matched the marks on Elena's arms.
"You cannot escape me," Amara said, her voice echoing in the room.
Elena's mind raced. She felt the power inside her building, pushing against her skin like it wanted to break free. Without thinking, she raised her hands and shouted words she didn't know she knew.
The blue fire rushed toward Amara, forcing her back. The Shadow Walker screamed, its misty form quivering with pain.
"Now!" Victor yelled, grabbing Elena's arm.
Lucian moved with amazing speed, smashing his fist into the wall behind them. The stone cracked, showing another hidden passage.
"Go!" he yelled, pushing Elena and Victor toward the opening.
They squeezed through the small gap just as Amara recovered. Her angry scream followed them as they ran down the dark path.
"How did you do that?" Victor asked Elena as they ran.
"I don't know," she answered, her voice shaking. "The words just came to me."
The tunnel opened into a small room with a single door. Lucian slammed it shut behind them and jammed a broken piece of wood under the handle.
"That won't hold her for long," he said, breathing hard.
Elena looked around. They were in what looked like an old building. Dust covered everything. Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with old texts.
"Where are we?" she asked.
"The church keeper's office," Victor stated. "We're safe for now. This room has special protection spells."
Elena fell into a dusty chair, her body shaking from the power she'd used. The blue marks on her skin had spread further, covering most of her arms and chest now.
"Tell me everything," she demanded, looking at both guys. "Right now. No more secrets."
Victor and Lucian exchanged looks. Finally, Victor sat down across from her.
"Your parents were James and Sarah Carter," he started. "James was my younger brother. We grew up knowing about our family's special blood, but we never thought it was important."
"Until Amara found us," Lucian added softly.
Victor nodded. "She had been searching for daywalker witches for centuries. When she found out about our family, she sent Lucian to investigate."
Elena turned to Lucian, her eyes wide. "You knew my parents?"
"I watched them from afar," Lucian revealed. "I was supposed to report back to Amara, but something happened. I started having dreams—visions of what Amara was planning. I realized she didn't just want to walk in daylight. She wanted to become something worse."
"So you warned my parents?" Elena asked.
"I tried," Lucian said, his face dark with sorrow. "But I was too late. Amara had already sent others."
Victor took over the story. "By then, Amara had turned me. I was her first experiment—half vampire, half human. She thought my family blood would help her transformation."
Elena studied Victor's face. Now that she knew, she could see her father in his features.
"The night your parents died," Victor continued, his voice breaking, "they were trying to hide you. They knew you were special—more powerful than any daywalker witch born in centuries. They performed a ritual to hide your power, binding it within you until you were old enough to control it."
"My episodes," Elena whispered. "The blackouts I've had all my life..."
"Your power trying to break free," Lucian confirmed.
"I arrived too late to save them," Victor said. "But I found you hiding in a closet. You were just a little girl, so scared. I couldn't take you with me—Amara would have found you through our connection. So I placed you with a trusted human family, and I've been watching over you ever since."
Elena's mind filled with memories—strange adults at her school events, watching from a distance. A guy leaving flowers at her parents' graves on the anniversary of their death. Victor had been there all along.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked, tears in her eyes.
"I was protecting you," Victor answered. "The less you knew about your true nature, the safer you were."
"Until I found you," Lucian said. "I've been searching for your family for centuries, Elena. Not to hurt them, but to save them from Amara."
"But you work for her," Elena argued.
"I pretended to," Lucian amended. "I've been trying to find a way to destroy her. When I realized you were alive, I knew you were the key."
"The Life Debt," Elena said. "Was that part of your plan?"
Lucian looked away. "Not exactly. I was dying that night in the alley. Amara's followers had discovered my betrayal. I never expected you to save me."
"But when you did," Victor added, "you activated the ancient bond between our families. Your power started to awaken."
Elena tried to understand everything. Her entire life had been a lie. The people she thought were strangers had been watching over her, fighting over her.
"What does Amara want with me?" she asked.
"Your blood contains the final ingredient she needs," Victor explained. "With it, she can make the Shadow Walker solid again—give it permanent form."
"And who is the Shadow Walker?" Elena asked, looking to Lucian. "It looks like a woman."
Pain flashed across Lucian's face. "It was my sister, Marlena. Amara took her five hundred years ago. Used her in a ritual that went wrong. Now she's trapped between worlds, neither living nor dead."
"Amara promised to restore her," Victor added. "That's how she controlled Lucian all these years."
The door rattled suddenly. Something strong was trying to get in.
"She's found us," Lucian said, standing up.
Victor moved to the stacks and pulled out a thick, ancient book. "Take this," he said, giving it to Elena. "It belongs to your family. It contains knowledge you'll need."
Elena took the book. The moment her fingers touched the leather cover, the blue marks on her skin glowed brighter. Images flooded her mind—women with the same marks, performing rites, fighting shadows.
"I don't understand," she whispered. "Why me? Why now?"
"Because you're the strongest of your line," Victor said. "And because the stars are aligned. The blood moon is coming, Elena. It's why Amara has been planning this for so long. In three days, during the eclipse, she'll try to complete her transformation."
The door splintered, wood cracking under great pressure.
"We need to move," Lucian urged. "There's another exit through the back."
As they ran toward the secret door, Elena clutched the book to her chest. "What happens if Amara succeeds?" she asked.
"Then darkness falls forever," Victor answered grimly. "No more daylight. No more safe places. Just endless night."
They pushed through the secret door and entered another tunnel. This one was different—covered in strange symbols that looked like the marks on Elena's skin.
"These tunnels will lead us to the surface," Victor stated. "To my safehouse."
As they hurried through the passageway, Elena noticed the book in her arms was getting warm. She opened it to find the pages shining with the same blue light as her marks.
"What's happening?" she asked.
"The book is responding to your power," Victor said. "It's waking up, just like you are."
They appeared in a small courtyard behind an old building. The sky was turning orange with dusk.
"This way," Victor said, pointing to a door across the yard.
They were halfway across when a figure stepped out of the shadows. Izzy stood there, her eyes glowing red.
"Hello, Elena," she said with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "I've been looking everywhere for you."
Before anyone could respond, dozens of shadows appeared around them. Each one bore the face of the Shadow Walker.
"Amara sends her regards," Izzy said. "And a message: Run all you want. The past always catches up."
The shadows began to close in, their misty hands reaching for Elena. The book in her arms burst into bright blue flames that didn't burn her skin.
"Elena!" Victor yelled. "The book! Use it!"
Elena opened the book, pages flipping by themselves to stop at a strange sign. Without knowing why, she pressed her hand against it.
Light burst around them, blinding in its intensity. When it faded, Izzy and the shadows were gone.
But so was Victor.
"What happened?" Elena cried, looking around frantically. "Where's Victor?"
Lucian's face was grim. "He's gone. The spell took him instead of us."
"We have to find him!"
"First, we need to get somewhere safe," Lucian said, taking her arm. "Come on. I know a place."
As they ran through the darkened streets, Elena clutched the book that had saved them but taken her uncle. Inside her, something had changed. The power no longer felt foreign—it felt like coming home.
"I'm going to find him," she told herself. "And then I'm going to end this, once and for all."
Behind them, hidden in the shadows, a pair of golden eyes watched them go.
