Three-Way Chase
Three-Way Chase
Elena stared at Victor, her heart racing. The tunnel behind them had caved in with a huge crash. Dust filled the air, making it hard to breathe.
"We need to move," Victor said, his words urgent. "Amara's followers are everywhere."
"I'm not going anywhere with you," Elena snapped. "You lied to me! Lucian told me everything—you helped kill my parents!"
Victor's face changed. For a second, he looked truly sad. "No, Elena. That's not true. Lucian doesn't know the whole story."
A scream echoed through the tube ahead of them. It didn't sound human.
"We don't have time for this," Victor said. He grabbed Elena's arm. "Trust me or die. Choose now."
The blue marks on Elena's arm glowed brighter at Victor's touch. She felt a strange feeling, not painful, but like tiny electric sparks under her skin.
"Fine," she said. "But touch me again, and I'll find out what these marks can really do."
Victor nodded and let go. He led the way through the dark tube, moving faster than any normal person could. Elena fought to keep up.
"What about Lucian?" she asked. "We can't just leave him!"
"If he survived, he'll find us," Victor said. "He can track you through your bond."
They exited from the tunnel into a street Elena didn't recognize. The sky was going gray with early morning light. They'd been underground all night.
"This way," Victor said, pointing toward an old building with a tall spire—a church.
They ran across the empty street. Behind them, shadows moved in the alley they'd just left. Three figures with glowing eyes stepped out, their moves too smooth to be human.
"Amara's hunters," Victor mumbled.
The church doors were locked. Victor broke the chain with one hard pull. Inside, the church was dark and dirty. Broken pews lined the main hall. Colored light passed through stained glass windows.
"What is this place?" Elena asked.
"Sacred ground," Victor answered. "One of the few places in the city where magic still lives naturally. Your kind built it centuries ago."
"My kind?"
"Daywalker witches. Your ancestors."
Elena felt a strange warmth spreading through her body. The blue marks on her arm glowed with light, casting shadows on the walls. She did feel stronger here, like the air itself was feeding her somehow.
"Why did you betray my family?" she asked, turning to face Victor.
Victor sighed and sat on a broken bench. In the dim light, Elena could see that half his face looked normal, but the other half was changing, becoming less human. Veins stood out black against his pale skin.
"I didn't betray them," he said. "I tried to save them. I'm your father's brother, Elena. Your uncle."
Elena gasped. "That's not possible. My parents had no family."
"They told you that to protect you. After Amara turned me against my will, your parents went into hiding. They knew what you were—what you would become."
"What am I?"
"The last of your kind. A daywalker witch with the power to change everything. Amara wants your blood to complete her transformation."
The church doors burst open. Elena and Victor spun around, ready to fight.
But it was Lucian who stumbled in, bleeding and dirty. Elena ran to him without thinking. When she touched him, her marks glowed even brighter.
"You're alive!" she said.
"Barely," Lucian replied. His eyes narrowed when he saw Victor. "Don't trust him, Elena. He's lying."
Victor stood up. "I'm not the one who's been hunting her family for centuries."
"I was trying to protect them from Amara!" Lucian shot back.
"Stop it!" Elena yelled. Her words echoed in the empty church, and the blue light from her marks flashed. Both men stepped back. "I don't trust either of you completely. But right now, we need to work together to survive."
A loud crash came from outside. Through the windows, they could see more shadows collecting.
"They found us," Lucian said.
Victor moved to a side door. "This way. There's a passage under the altar that leads to the catacombs."
As they reached the altar, Elena felt a rush of power. The marks had spread across her chest now, shining through her shirt. She placed her hand on the stone altar, and old symbols carved into it began to glow with the same blue light.
"What's happening?" she asked, amazed.
"Your power recognizes this place," Lucian explained. "Your ancestors built this church over an ancient magical site."
Victor pressed on a symbol, and a section of the floor slid open, showing stone steps leading down.
"Quickly," he pushed.
They fell into darkness. The tunnel was narrow and damp. The only light came from Elena's glowing marks.
"Tell me the truth," Elena said as they moved deeper. "Both of you. How do you really know each other?"
Victor and Lucian exchanged looks.
"We were friends once," Lucian revealed. "Brothers in arms. Until Amara came between us."
"He fell under her spell," Victor added. "Became her favorite. While I fought against what she made me."
"And my parents?" Elena asked.
"They were trying to break Amara's curse," Victor said. "They found an ancient ritual that could free all vampires from their bloodlust. But they needed something special."
"Your blood," Lucian finished. "But Amara found them first."
The passage opened into a big circular room. Stone tombs lined the walls. In the center stood a high platform with a basin cut into it.
Elena felt drawn to the lake. When she looked inside, she saw old, dried blood coloring the stone.
"What is this place?" she whispered.
"The heart of your ancestors' power," Victor said. "And where Amara performed the ritual that cursed her."
Suddenly, Elena's head filled with images—memories that weren't her own. A woman with silver hair stands over this basin. Blood pouring from her hands. Shadows rising from the floor, wrapping around her body.
"I can see her," Elena gasped. "Amara. She's—"
A terrible scream cut through the air. The walls of the chamber started to shake.
"She's here," Lucian said, his face pale.
The shadows in the corners of the room began to move, taking shape. The Shadow Walker with Lucian's sister's face formed before them, more solid than before.
"Elena," it spoke, its voice like broken glass. "At last."
Behind the shade, stepping through what seemed like a tear in reality, came Amara. But she looked different—stronger, her body more firm than Elena remembered. Her silver hair now had lines of Elena's own honey-blonde color. Her eyes glowed with blue light—the same color as Elena's marks.
"How did you escape?" Victor gasped.
Amara smiled. "I never left. The shadow realm is as much mine as this one now." Her eyes fixed on Elena. "And soon, so will you be."
The blue marks on Elena's body burned white-hot. She screamed as power rushed through her, wild and untamed. The bowl in the center of the room filled with blue fire.
"Run!" Lucian yelled, grabbing Elena.
But it was too late. Amara raised her hands, and the openings sealed with walls of darkness.
"No one's going anywhere," Amara said. "The final ritual has begun."
