Growing Powers
Growing Powers
Elena woke up with a start. The blue marks on her skin glowed in the dark room like tiny stars. She felt different today - stronger somehow.
Lucian sat by the window, watching the sunrise. Since their escape from Amara, they had been hidden in a small cabin in the woods outside Ravenshore City.
"You're awake," he said, turning to her. "The marks have spread."
Elena looked down at her arms. The blue patterns that had started at her wrist now covered both arms completely. When she moved, they seemed to shine and shift.
"I can feel things," she whispered. "Not just my own feelings, but others too." She looked at Lucian. "You're worried about Victor."
Lucian's eyes widened. "How did you know that?"
"I just... felt it." Elena got out of bed and walked to the window. Outside, birds sang in the trees. She could hear each separate song, as if her hearing had become super sharp overnight.
As Elena raised her hand to push her hair back, the cup on the bedside table suddenly flew across the room and smashed against the wall.
"What was that?" she cried.
"Your powers are growing," Lucian stated. "The book said this would happen."
Elena had been reading the ancient book Victor had given her before he vanished. Each night, she learned more about her family past and the powers of the daywalker witches.
"We need to find Victor," she said. "He knows more about my family than anyone."
Lucian nodded. "I've been tracking him since yesterday. I think I know where he might be."
As they prepared to leave the cabin, Elena noticed something odd. When she thought about needing her jacket, it floated across the room into her hands.
"That's new," Lucian said, looking impressed.
"I didn't even try to do it," Elena answered, shocked. "I just thought about wanting my jacket."
They drove into the city, keeping watch for any signs of Amara or her ghosts. Elena could feel the energy of Ravenshore City pressing against her mind - thousands of feelings all at once. It made her head hurt.
"Focus on my voice," Lucian told her, seeing her pain. "Block out the rest."
Elena tried, but it was hard. As they stopped at a traffic light, she suddenly grabbed Lucian's arm.
"Someone's watching us," she whispered.
Before Lucian could reply, a figure stepped into the street in front of their car. It was Izzy.
"Don't trust her," Elena said, feeling waves of both fear and determination coming from her old friend.
Lucian rolled down the window. "What do you want, Izzy?"
"To help," she said. "Victor is in trouble. Amara has him at the old theater."
"Why should we believe you?" Elena asked.
Izzy pulled up her sleeve to show a spot on her arm - similar to Elena's but much smaller and dimmer.
"What is that?" Elena gasped.
"I'm like you," Izzy explained. "A distant cousin. My powers are nothing compared to yours, but they've been waking up since you did that spell at the church."
This was the first surprise Elena hadn't expected. Izzy - a near relative?
"You betrayed me," Elena told her.
"I didn't know who I was then," Izzy begged. "Amara found me years ago and used me. But now I remember things - family stories about special women who could control light and shadow."
Elena felt the truth in Izzy's words but also sensed she was hiding something.
"Take us to Victor," Lucian decided.
The old theater stood dark and empty on the edge of town. As they approached, Elena felt a strange pull - like something inside was calling to her.
"He's down there," Izzy said, pointing to a door that went beneath the stage.
The three of them crept down a small staircase. Elena's marks glowed brighter with each step, lighting their way. At the bottom, they found a big room filled with strange equipment. Victor was strapped to a table in the center, tubes linked to his arms.
"Victor!" Elena rushed forward.
His eyes fluttered open. "Elena... it's a trap..."
Too late, Elena felt the danger. She spun around to see Izzy backing toward the door, her face twisted with sorrow.
"I'm sorry," Izzy whispered. "She has my sister."
The door slammed shut, locking them in. A mist began to fill the room - shadow mist, with faces forming and vanishing within it.
"Amara," Lucian growled.
From the mist stepped a figure - not Amara, but a young woman with golden eyes and Elena's face.
"Not quite," said the woman, smiling with Elena's mouth. "I'm what Amara will become once I have all of your power."
The shadow copy of Elena moved closer. "Do you like my new look? Your blood is helping me take solid form. Soon, I'll replace you completely."
Elena felt anger build inside her. The blue marks on her arms burned with heat. Without thinking, she raised her hands and a blast of blue fire shot out, hitting the shadow copy and knocking it backward.
"Get Victor," Elena told Lucian. "I'll hold her off."
As Lucian rushed to free Victor, Elena faced her double. The shadow thing laughed.
"Your power feeds me," it said. "Every spell makes me stronger."
Elena tried a different method. Instead of striking with fire, she closed her eyes and focused on the mist itself. She could feel each shadow particle, each piece of darkness. With a deep breath, she pulled inward with her mind.
The shadow copy screamed as parts of its form began to dissolve, pulled back into Elena.
"What are you doing?" it yelled.
"Taking back what's mine," Elena said, her voice echoing oddly.
As she absorbed the shadow energy, information flowed into her mind - Amara's memories, her plans. Elena saw the truth about the Shadow Walker, about Marlena, about everything.
"Elena, we need to go!" Lucian called. He had freed Victor, who looked weak but was standing.
Elena nodded, but before she could move, the shadow copy made one final frantic attack. It lunged forward, thrusting its misty hand into Elena's chest.
Pain like nothing she'd ever felt tore through Elena's body. Her marks flared with blinding light. The room shook as her power burst outward.
When the light faded, the shadow copy was gone. But Elena stood frozen, her eyes shining solid blue.
"Elena?" Lucian approached carefully.
She turned toward him, but her face was different somehow - older, wiser, and terribly sad.
"Lucian," she said, but her voice came out booming and strange, as if many people were speaking through her. "I see everything now."
"What do you mean?" Victor asked, leaning on Lucian for support.
"Amara's plan. The Shadow Walker. The truth about my family." Elena looked at her glowing arms. "I'm not just the last daywalker witch. I'm their vessel - all of them. Every witch Amara killed, their powers have been waiting for me."
The building began to shake around them.
"We need to leave," Lucian pushed.
As they rushed up the stairs, Elena felt something new stirring inside her - dozens of voices, memories of women she'd never met but somehow knew. Her ancestors were waking within her.
Outside, the sky had gone dark though it was noon. Storm clouds gathered unusually fast.
"It's beginning," Elena whispered.
"What is?" Victor asked.
Elena looked up at the darkened sky, her eyes still glowing blue. "The end of Amara's world. And the beginning of mine."
In the distance, a bolt of blue lightning hit the church where they had faced Amara before. The ground beneath their feet shook.
"Elena, what's happening to you?" Lucian asked, his face filled with worry.
She turned to him, tears of blue light sliding down her cheeks. "I'm not just Elena anymore."
Above the city, the clouds parted to show a blood moon appearing impossibly in the daytime sky.
"The true ritual is starting," Elena said. "And I'm the key."
