FIFTY NINE

“I think you should calm down”
“Calm down? Just because she is your sister and you feel safe with her doesn’t mean I do. She’s nothing but safe to me” I ran my fingers through my hair.
Anna left a while ago but Lyra didn’t say anything to me until now. The sky had turned grey already. I couldn’t tell what the time was or how many days we had spent here. Kade refused to wake up so I was here dealing with Anna all by myself.
“I don’t know how else to talk to you if you don’t listen to me. She. Won’t. Hurt. Me. Or you. Again!” She paused after each word to get her message across and guess what? They didn’t fucking get across.
I didn’t care what she said or could ever say about Anna but I knew Anna. She didn’t. She starts that way. Like the good guy until there’s a sudden switch and that only happens when she realizes you’ve trusted her enough. As much as I wanted to say these things to Lyra. I didn't. If she believed so much that Anna loved her then I won’t take it from her. She finally found a family and I won’t take that from her. I’d just watch. And protect her so that when that time comes for Anna to show her filthy self this time I would be prepared.
“Fine,” I said, sounding like I gave up.
She smiled at me and took my hands in hers. I never really said this but her hands were so tiny compared to mine. Warm and soft. One would think she has never touched anything in her life to have such soft hands.
“Good. All you have to do is trust me” Her hands left mine to palm my cheeks. Slowly I rubbed my face in her hands and she chuckled.
“What?” I asked and she shrugged her shoulders. “Your stubble is ticklish” Oh shit. I probably looked like shit. When was the last time I had a bath? I certainly couldn’t remember.
I moved away from her quickly, letting her hands fall to her side. She frowned. “W-what’s wrong?”
“Uhh. I need to take a bath. I probably look like crap and I-“
“There’s a bathroom in my room.” In her room? That wasn’t a good idea.
“The uhh, the clinic doesn’t have one? I need to stay close to Kade.” There was no way I was taking my eyes off of him. Even with sick people being around him there was no telling what could happen. Although her room sounded tempting.
“It does. But it doesn’t have a shower”
“I’ll make do. Mind doing me a favour?” She nodded. Her eyes were wide and filled with confusion.
“Is there any way I could get something to wear? These are soiled with blood and smell like it too”
“Uhh. I don’t know but I will see what I can do. I’d ask Ishada”
“And who is that?”
“Anna’s henchman or something. He is safe don’t worry” Everybody was safe to her.
“Okay. If it’s possible to find an extra pair for Kade I’d really like that” she nodded her head and smiled at me.
“Sure. I’d be right back” with that she turned around to leave.
The room was quiet. Only the beeping sounds of machines could be heard. The place smelled. I hated the smell of sick people. I hated seeing sick people. I looked around and counted the people that were there beside Kade. Four. Three elderly males and one little kid. He was bandaged everywhere. I wondered what happened to him as I made my way towards what seemed like the bathroom.
A dim light illuminated the corner of the bathroom. It was a bit dark still. If I looked around further I would get discouraged so I quickly did my business and left. Couldn’t shave as well cause I had nothing with me. At least I didn’t smell. I consoled myself with that and headed back towards the room. And yeah still in the same clothes. But my hair was up in a bun. It grew longer.
As I walked towards Kade’s bed I realized there was someone there. Lyra? No, those weren’t the clothes she had been wearing earlier. Panic set in my heart as I rushed towards his bed.
My hands shot out to grab the person. I turned the person towards me and was about to hit them on the face when I stopped. It was the lady who had come to check up on him earlier.
“W-what are you doing?” I asked moving away from her. Her eyes were round with fear. I looked behind her to check on Kade. No funny thing had gone amiss with how I left him earlier. He looked pretty much the same.
“Sorry, I came to check his vital signs. Did I scare you” she moved closer, placing her right hand on my shoulders while the other one held the pen and paper she brought.
“I guess you did, seeing as he can’t move” we both turned our heads sharply at the sound of Lyra’s voice.
She didn’t look at me. She glared at the hand on my shoulders oh. I quickly pulled back. I still haven’t forgotten how she reacted to me smiling at the lady earlier. To be honest I wasn't smiling, I was being polite.
“Uh. If there are any changes please let me know”
“Of course” Lyra answered.
With a quick nod, the lady walked away. I almost reached out a hand to stop her. But I didn’t. Lyra was silent as she placed the clothes she brought on the foot of kade’s bed.
“I don’t know if they fit but if they don’t. Let me know” she said without looking at me. What did I do? I wondered.
“Lyra. I promise you I met her here. I a-“
“Why are you explaining anything? It doesn’t matter to me” lies.
She obviously was lying. I stepped closer. “It doesn’t?”
“Well, it shouldn’t. I-I don’t know what’s wrong with me but since I got Ria i have been acting weird. Did you know I almost broke her wrist? I mean I thought about it. I just stopped because I didn’t want you to think I-“
I pulled her into a hug before she could finish her statement. Did it make me happy that she was jealous? Yes. Extremely happy. I’ve never had someone show jealousy on my behalf. This feeling was new to me and I loved every second of it.
“It’s okay. That’s how it is for me too. I feel like that most times”
“But I don’t talk to others. Not even back at your territory I- oh. Y-you felt like that with Kade?” I smiled sadly. “Yes”
