Chapter 103: The Question Was Asked
Chapter 103: The Question Was Asked
Alpha King Caspian's POV:
I could not believe what I just heard. I leaned forward and lightly pressed the space bar as I let the words I just heard sink in. ' He died right in front of me. '
I had to sit back as that phrase seemed to take my next breath away from me. It did so in such a manner that it caused Beta Maxwell to stand up, as he leaned forward adn placed his hands on the front edge of my desk, looking at me intently. I had to lean back in my chair.
What would I do if I lost my Beta? He knew practically everything. We have been together for so long... I don't know how I would honestly cope without him. To be in the land of an enemy and lose someone you have such a connection to... Someone of that degree... I simply can not imagine.
Well, in a way, I wasn't there when my parents were killed, as I was still young, but still.
"Your Highness?" Beta Maxwell spoke up at that moment. That's when he asked me, "Are you all right?"
I took in a deep breath and held it for a moment before I let it out again.
"Yes, I am fine... I just find it all hard to imagine. I mean, you do..." I couldn't even finish my statement.
"Here... I will let you continue, as this next part you may want to pay close attention to," Beta Maxwell said as he lightly reached over to press the space bar on the laptop computer so I could hear Hemming's next statement, and sure enough, he said what I would have done in that situation.
I furrowed my brows at his statement when he sat back down as I heard Hemming speak again.
"I did manage to take down several of their pack members," Hemming said as I looked back at the small screen. "But that didn't help the odds in our favor."
As I continued to watch this encounter unfold, I saw a pained expression appear across Hemming's face. This could have been due to anything. The loss of his Beta. To regret the feeling of not being around a loved one he left behind. He did mention that he wasn't allowed to reveal the nature or the length of his trip. That, and the fact of anything as to the details before he even left.
I noticed there was a brief pause in Hemming's statement. I could also tell that his expression changed a bit. It showed more than pain. I have been injured, but this... this look of pain, there was something deeper to it.
Then a thought came to mind. I know that as he was wearing the prison chains, he couldn't communicate with anyone, even his Wolf for that matter, but after. Was he able to reach anyone from his pack? Not having communication can hurt a werewolf in ways that most might not be able to comprehend.
"What's the reason behind your anguish?" I heard Beta Maxwell ask Hemming right then, causing me to sit up as I continued to look at the screen, as he was looking at it as well.
I couldn't help but wonder what caused his reaction and the expression of pain that Hemming displayed. In a way, did he regret something? Could that be the case?
"There's only one thing that I regret... "Hemming said as if this past video read my current thoughts, and that shocked me more than I would be willing to admit. "About being gone for as long as I have been."
"What's that exactly?" Beta Maxwell asked, taking the words I would have used right then.
"It's only that I've left behind one person who meant the world to me... I only wish I didn't have to... leave," Hemming said as he took a brief pause before he continued. "Please do not misunderstand me when I say this. I was honored that the Grand Alpha, His Royal Highness, entrusted me with such a task... To retrieve imperative information while away. I only wish I had more time with... before I had to go."
My eyes went wide at Hemming's statement. Even the look he displayed on his face was quite sincere. I couldn't help it as I studied his expression. The demeanor he displayed, I would have to say, spoke volumes. Then, as I watched Hemming look down, I wasn't expecting to see what I saw next.
There were tears swelling in his eyes. Wait, he... He is... crying?!
'Seriously?' (Cash couldn't help but ask right then.)
'I honestly don't know what to say, Cash. And I thought I'd seen it all in my current position.' (I said in my response.)
"Who exactly did you leave behind?" Beta Maxwell asked him, curious who all could have caused such a reaction.
Hemming looked up at Beta Maxwell on the screen and paused before he spoke. The tone he used was plain, as if he were fighting back against more unknown pain.
"My daughter," I heard Hemming say as I sat up straight in my chair. "I left my one true daughter behind."
"Alright, hold on," Beta Maxwell responded in a questionable manner. "What do you mean, you're one true daughter?"
"The answer is simple, really," Hemming answered right away. I couldn't help as I furrowed my brows even more with confusion as to what he said as well. "My mate and I had one small child... a few short months before I had to leave on this trip. My child was female. She's the only child I ever had who was my very own flesh and blood. My mate, on the other hand, had other children before we came to be together."
I didn't know what to say. After being gone all these years, his only concern was the daughter he had to leave behind.
'Is that accurate? Where is his daughter? Did she find a Mate?' (Cash asked me one question after the other.)
'I will figure this out, Cash. I just need to hear all that he has to say. Our Beta, Maxwell, wouldn't have brought it to my attention if it weren't necessary.' (I replied as I tried to stay on top of everything I was finding out as I continued to watch this.)
I didn't know what to think in that moment as there was a brief silence. That's when I heard Hemming's voice ring through the speakers of the laptop.
"I have a question," Hemming asked, as I looked back up at the screen again. However, I didn't expect to see tears starting to run down his face, as he swallowed his pain in silence.
"What's your question?" Beta Maxwell asked right then, as I looked over at him sitting opposite my desk, knowing he was getting uncomfortable about something that had yet to be revealed.
"Would you mind telling me if my daughter is still there?" I heard Hemming ask on the video. The look on his face was sincere and extremely persistent. "At the Blue Moon Pack?"
"What's your daughter's name?" Beta Maxwell asked Hemming sincerely.
