Chapter 104: Could Not Believe This!

Chapter 104: Could Not Believe This!
Alpha King Caspian's POV:

"Maisie. Her name is Maisie Blue," I heard Hemming state, speaking in a plain tone.

There was no mistake in my mind. At that point, I thought I had just heard it wrong. When, in fact, I was looking directly at it. I looked straight at the laptop in front of me, set just off to the side so it wasn't blocking my view of Beta Maxwell sitting on the opposite side of my desk.

I didn't know how to proceed. I looked down before looking right there on top of my desk at the video screen for a moment. I could not believe what I heard. My jaw tightened at that very moment, and I clenched my fists, as my arms were resting there on the armrests of my chair.

I didn't know how to interpret it after hearing Hemming respond to the question Beta Maxwell had asked him. He was looking down the moment before he spoke. He looked up from his lap, directly at Beta Maxwell in the video, and responded without flinching.

I was still trying to wrap my mind around what Beta Maxwell had asked him. Hearing Hemming's response... I was still having a hard time with this. I couldn't believe what I heard.

Here I am, sitting here watching something that completely took me by surprise. My Beta, seeing my reaction, narrowed his eyes as he could tell I was not sure how to proceed. To hear something like this, knowing that the father of my newly fated Mate was the one captured. The one who was sent to leave all those years ago. How was I going to deal with the fact that he was the prisoner being interviewed after we returned here?

"Can you please tell me how my daughter's doing?" I heard Hemming ask right after that, drawing my attention back to the screen as the video was still playing. I didn't manage to pause it in that moment. "She should have just turned 18 a few months ago. She's the only one I wish to know about currently."

"What about your mate, as you put it earlier?" I heard Beta Maxwell ask him in return.

I didn't say anything, but I did narrow my brows as to why he only wanted to know about his daughter and not about his mate. A mate is one thing that a werewolf should inquire about, especially an Alpha for that fact. There was even a bit of surprise in the tone of his voice when he asked that.

Beta Maxwell breezed past the fact about what Hemming said about his daughter and moved on to his next question. Granted, the facts about knowing who her father was were most certainly important, as I am certain he had good reason for asking.

"What about her?" Hemming asked, causing my eyes to go wide at his arrogance.

I looked over at Beta Maxwell briefly when I turned back to look at the screen as Hemming continued.

"She's a grown woman. One who can fend for herself," Hemming responded with not an ounce of emotion in the tone that he used. I was even surprised that there was no hesitation in his response. "She's more capable of handling things on her own than my daughter might be, as I wasn't there to see how things were when she was growing up. I simply wish to know about her status, that's all."

"I'll see what I can find out," I heard Beta Maxwell respond to him as he finally stood up to his feet.

I reached up and began to rub my chin as I heard Beta Maxwell's voice ring out once more on the video.

"For now, I'll let you know that you are not free to go by any means. I'm sure you must understand this. I have to verify the story you brought before us. Then, His Highness will have to decide what He is to do with that accordingly. Do you understand?"

I finally raised my chin. At the same time, I lowered my hand back down, setting it on the armrest of my chair. As I thought about this, shock and surprise didn't quite cover the fact of what I had heard here today.

As I continued to watch this video play out, I didn't need any more delays. That's when I saw Hemming look back at Beta Maxwell and nod his head, as if he seemed to understand the reason behind him not being allowed to be set free as of yet. I was surprised that he didn't say anything either.

"Well then, do you have any last requests before I part?" Beta Maxwell asked, now standing slightly to the side of the camera's range of view.

"I do have one request. If you're to keep me in chains, please don't place me with the other captives," Hemming asked, his tone this time sincere and almost pleading. That caused me to narrow my brows at his rather unique request. "I don't wish to be threatened any more than necessary. The last thing you want to do is corner a Warrior on their worst day."

'That is an interesting demand for someone who has no business making such a request.' (Cash spoke up right then as I lowered my hand, still thinking about everything that I have learned so far.)

'That is very interesting indeed.' (I thought about what he said and pondered why he'd ask such a thing.) 'However, if you can consider that his story is checked out and it comes to be truthful... I would understand why he would ask such a thing. Don't you think?'

'Did you also catch that he classified himself as a Warrior?' (Cash asked, further driving his point about the unusual request from a captured Alpha.)

'I did catch that. To corner a Warrior on their worst day, he said. How was this considered to be his worst day? I couldn't help but wonder.' (I responded, still trying to think as to why he would say something like that.)

"Well then, I'll see to it that you're placed in a holding cell right across from them," Beta Maxwell responded in return. I was appreciative that my Beta was willing to accommodate and still keep him within sight of the other captives. "They can see you, yet know you're not a traitor. In a way, you're safe from their advances. Will that do?"

I reached up and tapped the space bar to stop the video once again. So far, after hearing everything that I heard, I could not believe all of this.

"Was there anything else that I need to focus on, according to the information that I have heard here and now?" I asked Beta Maxwell as I leaned forward in my chair and placed my hands on the front edge of my desk.

"No, Your Highness," Beta Maxwell responded. "After that, I left the Holding Booth and came to see you."

I nodded as I responded, saying, "Then I have a lot to decipher. A lot to think about."

Suddenly, Cash spoke, saying, 'Mate. Something wrong with Mate! Hurry!...'
