Chapter 102: So Much To Differentiate

Chapter 102: So Much To Differentiate
Alpha King Caspian's POV:

There was so much weight in the words that I heard up to this point already... so much so that I didn't even know what to think about all of this. There was already so much going on in a single day, and now, I had to add this to what I was currently dealing with. Especially on the day that I found my newly Bonded Mate as well. Granted, I had yet to complete the Mating Bond, but still.

I had just found her... and I didn't want to put too much on her all at once. And not to mention, in such dire conditions too... only to discover the fact that what happened all those years ago, when my... I had to stop my thought when a new thought came to mind. I didn't respond when I spoke, asking my question, my tone now sounding as cold as ice.

"He was sent away to gather intel that could have prevented my parents' death?" I demanded as I looked up.

I could see Beta Maxwell swallow, rather hard, at hearing the deadly tone I used. It was one that would make anyone cower.

He was my Beta. He was supposed to have a certain composure about him, but not in this precise moment.

I couldn't help it as I reached forward, once again pausing the video. There was so much that I was trying to comprehend about what was already said that I forced my eyes to close again.

"Your Highness..." I heard Beta Maxwell speak up as I had yet to open my eyes. "I know this can be hard to hear."

My eyes burst open at that precise moment, as I looked at him with extreme intensity.

"Hard... to hear?" I spoke, leaning forward and closing my eyes again as I tried to remain in control. With that next exhale, I slowly opened my eyes. I was about to speak when Beta Maxwell spoke first.

"If you will allow me, Your Highness," Beta Maxwell spoke up before I had the opportunity. "This was hard for me to hear when I first heard it, too. There's other information that I will tell you after that. Stuff he has said previously that I didn't have a chance to collect on video. I only request you finish the last few minutes. As you had previously said you didn't want to be away from your mate for very long."

"Very well," I said, still fighting my thoughts as I reached forward and lightly pressed the space bar once more to hear the video immediately continue.

"We were told not to inform any family or other pack members as to where we were headed. Or for how long we might be away," I heard Hemming say as I thought about that. "As I was the Alpha of my pack, I would have to find someone to stand in my stead, as my Beta was also selected to go on this trip. We both had a very special skill set that would be vital for the success of this particular mission."

I had another question that I wanted to interject about how the next Alpha was selected, but chose to reserve comment when Hemming continued. I couldn't help but wonder in the back of my mind if Hemming knew the next Alpha that was to be placed in that particular position over the Blue Moon Pack.

"When we arrived in the rival nation, I was pleased we didn't encounter any incidents, therefore making a clean pass without being noticed. I thought it was a bit odd and informed my Beta. We both agreed something was amiss, but continued on. The sooner we got the information we needed and left, the better it would be for all of us."

"While we were there, we managed to stay out of sight. At the same time, we gathered all the necessary information to determine whether those threats were real. And I have to tell you, we weren't expecting to see all that we found out."

'Do you really think all of this is the case?' (Cash, my Wolf, asked me in the brief pause of the video.

'He doesn't seem to give out the tell-tale signs that he is lying as I am watching him sitting there. He seems to be just recalling details from all those years ago.' (I said in my response.)

"What exactly did you find out?" I heard my Beta ask as the video continued to play.

"I, for one, was horrified at what we found, as they all had the means to carry out this threat and so much more," I heard Hemming say, as he took in a breath and then spoke again. "We decided it was in the best interest of everyone to leave right away after we gathered the necessary information and not wait for the cover of night."

"What were you wanting to wait for?" I heard Beta Maxwell ask this time.

I could tell just by the sound of his voice that he was already a bit skeptical as to how he worded his last question. He was always precise in his word choice. I, for one, wasn't sure why the travel party would want to wait, so I could understand why they thought of the first opportunity to leave as well.

"We wanted to wait till the middle of the night to leave, but thought it was best to leave at the current time, as it was already close to dusk. We all thought that since we arrived without incident, maybe we could leave and therefore not be seen," I heard Hemming continue. Then, he seemed a bit apprehensive when he added, "However, just before we reached the safety of the border, we were discovered."

"I'm not sure what happened, or even how they came upon us, but all of a sudden, we were surrounded. There was a great number of men all ready for a fight. They had to know of our presence and allowed us to get as far as we did."

'I would agree with that tactic. Let the supposed enemy gather all the necessary information they might need. In lieu of letting them think they're going to escape. Makes perfect sense to me.' (I said as I could tell Cash was paying close attention to this.)

'I agree. One question. What's the actual reason to allow them to succeed? Only to prevent them from leaving?' (Cash asked in return.)

"What happened next?" Beta Maxwell asked, but this time he sounded more intrigued than before.

"Well, that is when they decided to turn on us. There was no way we could have escaped from those odds without a fight. I've always been considered a decent opponent, but given the way things were going against us, I was surprised I wasn't killed off as well."

Suddenly, Hemming stopped speaking, and I saw he looked down for the first time. Then he spoke, his tone sounding more upset.

"I saw my Beta... He... He died right in front of me. There was nothing I could do to stop it either."
