Chapter 44 Chapter 15.2
Desmond peeled the lychees he bought and sliced the watermelon before handing them to Heaven. Meanwhile, Heaven grabbed several ice cubes from the fridge, filled her glass with water, and began preparing her drink. Desmond simply watched her. He frowned when he saw her pour milk into her water and drop in the sliced watermelon.
“Can you even eat that? What does it taste like?” Desmond asked, confused by what Heaven was doing. Heaven just smiled, made another glass, and handed it to him.
“Try it. It’s good,” she said. Desmond shook his head, afraid he might throw up if he tasted it. Heaven glared at him.
“It’s not poison! It’s actually good. Try it so you’ll believe me,” she insisted.
Reluctantly, Desmond took the glass and drank the milk-water mixture. It didn’t taste bad, but it still wasn’t something he’d enjoy.
“Just finish it all, but don’t eat too many sweets,” Desmond reminded her before returning to his workstation. When he noticed the shopping bag he’d bought earlier, he picked it up and walked toward Heaven.
Heaven frowned at him as he handed her the shopping bag.
“What’s that?” she asked.
“Just take it. It’s a gift for you,” he replied.
Heaven was puzzled — what occasion could there be for Desmond to give her a gift? She took the shopping bag and peeked inside, nearly choking when she saw the beautiful designer handbag.
“I can’t accept this. I don’t even use expensive bags,” she said. Desmond could only sigh.
“From now on, you’ll be using luxury bags. You carry my name every day — I don’t want people thinking I can’t even buy you something nice. Consider it my gift to you since I haven’t given you anything since we got married.”
Heaven set the bag beside her. She wasn’t fond of material things, but Desmond had a point — she did carry the Velasquez name every day.
“Thank you,” Heaven said softly, and Desmond just nodded in response. He went back to his workstation but couldn’t help glancing at Heaven, who was still happily eating.
A secret smile crossed his face — even simple things made her so happy.
As days and weeks passed, Heaven’s belly began to grow. She was also gaining weight little by little, and none of her clothes fit her anymore. She pouted as she stared at her closet — none of her skirts, pants, or blouses fit. She searched for her only garterized dress and decided to wear that instead.
After getting dressed, she went downstairs, where Desmond was already waiting in the living room. Heaven picked up her sandals, but she couldn’t put them on anymore.
“Nothing fits you anymore? Do you want to go shopping for new clothes?” Desmond asked. Heaven wanted to refuse, but she really didn’t have anything to wear.
“My blouses and skirts don’t fit anymore. This is the only garterized dress I have. Can I take the day off today and go to work tomorrow instead? I can go shopping by myself,” she said. Desmond shook his head, took his large slippers, and placed them in front of her feet.
“I’ll go with you today. I don’t have much work at the company anyway,” he said, taking her hand as they walked out together. He opened the car door for Heaven, and she couldn’t help but watch him as he got into the driver’s seat.
As much as she wanted to stop herself, she could feel herself slowly falling for Desmond.
During the drive, Desmond talked to his secretary over the phone while Heaven quietly sat in the passenger seat. When the call ended, Desmond turned to her.
“Do you want to buy things for the baby, too? I’ll have one of the rooms in the house renovated for the nursery. Once that’s done, you’ll start sleeping in my room,” he said. Heaven nodded, feeling suddenly excited at the thought of shopping for baby items.
When they arrived at the mall, they went straight to the maternity and baby section. Most of the clothes they saw were dresses and garterized skirts.
“Just wear dresses from now on so you won’t have trouble putting on pants. These matching sets look nice too — they’ll make your belly more comfortable,” Desmond said as he browsed through the racks.
“Good morning, sir. What can I help you with today?” the saleslady asked brightly, directing her attention only to Desmond. Heaven noticed how the saleslady completely ignored her.
“Don’t mind me. Help my wife with what she needs,” Desmond said firmly. The saleslady’s face turned red with embarrassment, and she immediately approached Heaven instead.
“For you, ma’am? Or for the baby?” she asked. Her tone was now serious, unlike the sweet one she used earlier with Desmond.
“I don’t really need an assistant, thank you,” Heaven replied politely. She wasn’t comfortable having someone follow her around — she couldn’t choose properly if the saleslady kept explaining everything she touched.
Heaven picked out only five dresses, feeling shy about taking too many since everything in the store was expensive. Desmond, noticing how few she’d chosen, began adding more dresses to their cart.
“Why did you get so many? I can’t wear all of those,” Heaven said, about to return them, but Desmond stopped her.
“Do you only plan to dress once? Do you think five dresses will last you until you give birth? I’m not being stingy, Heaven. Buy everything you need. And if you won’t pick what you want, I’ll just buy the whole store,” Desmond said. Heaven could only pout in response. She didn’t return the dresses Desmond added.
Every time Heaven picked something, Desmond would add more to their cart. She didn’t complain anymore — she knew Desmond would just have something more to say anyway.
