Chapter 43 Chapter 15.1
Desmond was browsing online, looking for a bag to buy. He wanted to give Heaven a gift—something he had never done since they started living together. Zachary, sitting nearby, couldn’t help but grin as he watched his friend.
“Do you like her?” Zachary teased.
“I just want to buy her a bag,” Desmond replied curtly. Zachary shook his head in amusement.
“You didn’t answer my question. Come on, admit it. Do you feel something for Heaven, even just a little? There’s nothing wrong if you do—she’s your wife, and you’re about to have a child together. I just didn’t expect that you’d be the father of Heaven’s baby,” Zachary rambled on. Desmond ignored him, keeping his eyes on his phone as he browsed through elegant and expensive bags.
“By the way, do you remember when you came to see me at the hospital? Did you already know at that time that you had gotten someone pregnant?” Zachary asked.
“No, why do you ask?” Desmond replied blankly, still focused on his phone.
“Really? You didn’t know? Heaven was with me in the hospital that day,” Zachary said.
Desmond froze and frowned at him. He remembered following Zachary to the hospital that day because he had something important to tell him.
“Heaven was with you? What were you two doing there?” Desmond’s tone carried a hint of irritation, which made Zachary chuckle.
“I had just started working at the company that day when I saw a woman collapse on the floor. I wasn’t in the mood to work yet, so instead of going straight in, I helped her and took her to the hospital. That’s how I found out she was pregnant—that’s why she fainted. If you had seen Heaven that day, would you have recognized her?”
Desmond looked back at his phone and continued scrolling through the website.
“I don’t know. I’ve already forgotten what happened between us.”
“You don’t know? So when you met her again, you didn’t recognize her?” Zachary asked curiously. Desmond shot him a sharp look, but Zachary didn’t back down.
“Of course I recognized her,” Desmond muttered.
“So, did you immediately believe that the baby she’s carrying is yours?” Desmond glared at his friend, clearly irritated.
“Why are you asking so many questions? You’re worse than a woman with all that prying,” he snapped. Zachary just smiled.
“I’m just curious about what’s going on with you. Don’t you think Heaven might be heaven-sent in your life? Think about it—Macie rejected your marriage proposals several times. She even cheated on you once, and you don’t even know what she’s doing now in France. Maybe Heaven was sent to you so you could finally stop chasing after Macie.”
Desmond fell silent, his mind turning over Zachary’s words. Could that really be true? Was Heaven the sign that he needed to let Macie go?
“Are you still waiting for Macie? What’s the status of your relationship now? Are you still in love with her?” Zachary asked seriously.
Desmond set his phone down; he couldn’t focus on shopping anymore.
“I don’t know. The last time we talked, I told her to choose—me or her dream. She chose her dream. I told her I wouldn’t wait for her anymore because I was tired of waiting and waiting. But she still left, believing I’d keep waiting anyway.”
Zachary looked at Desmond intently. He could tell that Desmond still had feelings for Macie—and that Heaven might end up hurt in the end.
“So, if she comes back, will you leave Heaven for Macie?” Zachary asked, his tone now serious.
Desmond looked at him.
“I’ve already accepted Heaven into my life, and we’re going to have a child. I don’t know if I’d go back to Macie if she returned. I honestly don’t know how I’d feel if that happened. I’m not sure,” Desmond admitted, clearly conflicted.
Zachary didn’t say anything for a moment. Then he stood and looked down at his friend.
“If you’re not sure about your feelings, then don’t let Heaven fall for you. I may not know her that well, but I can tell she’s a good person. She doesn’t deserve to get hurt. Heaven looks so innocent—like she’s never experienced real love before. Please don’t hurt her, Desmond. If you don’t intend to love her, don’t let her love you.”
His tone was serious and cold. Desmond frowned as he looked up at his friend.
Zachary left shortly after, leaving Desmond deep in thought about everything he’d said. He shook his head and tried to brush it off, turning his attention back to his phone to continue looking for a bag he thought Heaven would like.
He paused again, remembering Zachary’s question. Did he really not feel anything for Heaven? He shook his head once more. All he knew was that he wanted to take care of her—and their child.
Once he found the perfect bag, he ordered it and left the office to pick it up himself.
Desmond smiled as soon as he got the bag, hoping Heaven would like it. When he got back to his car, he called her. She answered right away.
“I stepped out of the office. Do you want me to buy you anything while I’m out?” he asked.
“I want lychee. And buy some watermelon and milk too,” Heaven replied. Her voice always made him smile.
“Alright, I’ll get what you want,” he said and hung up.
He headed straight to the supermarket, bought everything she asked for, then returned to the company and went straight to her workstation.
“Heaven,” he called. Everyone turned to look at him. Desmond raised the bags he was carrying, and Heaven couldn’t help but smile.
“Just put them in the fridge for now. I’ll eat them during lunch break,” she said.
“You’re holding back your hunger? Why wait until lunch? Come with me so you can eat them now,” Desmond said firmly, turning to leave—but then he looked back at her.
“If you don’t follow me, I’ll come back here and carry you myself,” he warned.
Heaven blushed in embarrassment as their coworkers overheard them. Not wanting to make a scene, she quickly stood up and followed Desmond—just in case he really meant what he said.
