Chapter 208 Harsh And Hurtful
Chapter 208 Harsh And Hurtful
Kristen's POV
Sapphire is yet to change out of her bloody wedding dress, she's still in tears, mourning Bruce whose
heart was ripped out at their reception, leaving him dead.
It's just so hard to console her when I am broken myself.
No one saw it coming. We thought things would end up smoothly since my husband, Calhoun ensured the whole place is secured. But someone still found his way in, and killed Bruce right in front of the wedding guests, before throwing his heart in Sapphire's face. The pain is laced with insults too.
Sapphire is still wailing, saying she wants to end it all, since she has nothing else to hold on to.
Maddy, tearful as well, comes in and rebukes her from saying this.
I approach Sapphire, speaking softly in an attempt to offer solace, "Hold on to the love you shared with Bruce, and the new life growing within you."
Sapphire's eyes, fills up with anguish, meets mine, " Love? He's gone! There's nothing left for me,"
Before I can respond, her grief transforms into rage. She grabs my shirt, her voice piercing through the
room.
"How dare you talk about hope? What do you know about losing someone like this?"
I stand silent, absorbing the weight of her pain, but her words escalates into raw emotion.
And she continues unleashing her fury.
"Imagine if it was Calhoun lying there, his heart torn out for everyone to see!"
The impact of her slap echoes in the room, pain radiating through my cheek.
I lean against the wall, choosing understanding over retaliation.
But the slap was unexpected. I never thought she would hit me out of anger. My words weren't wrong but I guess I delivered them at the wrong time. It was wrong of me to speak like that, when I am supposed to let her wail and talk as much as she wants.
"You have no idea... none of you do," Sapphire yells in my face and bursts into a fresh set of tears.
"Sapphire, stop!" Maddy rushes to intervene, pulling Sapphire away, "Please don't hurt Kristen, she's pregnant and she's trying to look out for you."
Sapphire's accusations continues to pierce the air as
Maddy struggles to keep her calm."
"Easy for her to talk about hope and love. Calhoun's alive. She doesn't know the agony of losing
everything," Sapphire's voice is full of so much resentment that for a moment I shudder because I am taken aback.
Like a knife, her words slices deeply through me but I don't want to hold onto them because she's talking from shock and grief. She doesn't mean them. She's just hurt.
Maddy, casting a desperate glance my way, says, " Kristen, please, just go. I don't want her to hurt you
more. She's not herself right now."
With a solemn nod, I wipe away tears and begin to retreat, my heart heavy with the weight of Bruce's
sudden demise and my hurting best friend.
"Running away because your perfect life is intact,
unlike ours," Sapphire, still consumed by grief, spits
out another accusation.
"Just go, Kristen," Maddy urges me.
And as I reach the door, I pause, my voice breaking
with the pain of the moment.
"I never meant to make it seem that way. I just wanted to help, but I'll leave," my voice is choked up
with the emotions doing a turmoil inside of me.
Sapphire's accusations and screams continues until I shut the door behind me and I can barely hear
nagging.
In the hallway, I struggle to maintain composure, my tears flowing without control.
"Hey," Calhoun looks completely broken, he's not in tears but from his demeanor, one can tell he's swimming in the ocean of his tears.
I take a shuddered breath as he leaves his chair and
engulfs me into a tight hug, squeezing me into his body, as if afraid if he let's go, I'll disappear out of his sight.
I try to hold back my sniff, but fail woefully at this, and a concerned Calhoun breaks out of the hug just to examine my face.
"Are you okay?" Calhoun cups my face in his large palm. And it's just hurts that he's mourning his best friend and he's still so concerned for me.
Biting down on my bottom lip so I don't break into a sob, I nod. But the tears just brim to my eyes. "Who did this to you?" My husband's voice is firm and serious as his eyes flashes with concern when he gently touches the handprint of my cheeks. His worry
evident.
This is right after he tucks my hair behind my ear.
I hesitate, trying to shield my best friend from Calhoun's anger.
"Nobody, I just fell. It's nothing, really," I lie, feigning nonchalance.
Calhoun's expression hardens, not buying my attempt to downplay the situation.
"No, that's not true. This is a handprint. Someone hit
you. Tell me who it is," he demands. Eyes growing
with fury.
I sigh, upon realizing I can't hide the truth from him.
"It was Sapphire. She's not herself right now, Calhoun. I said something that upset her, and she lashed out," I reluctantly confess.
Calhoun's anger flares, his protective instincts taking
over.
"Sapphire did this? I can't believe she would hurt you
like this, especially now," My husband has his face contorted in anger.
"Calhoun, please, she's going through so much. It's a
terrible situation for all of us," I say, trying to defuse
the situation.
"That doesn't excuse her hurting you. I need to talk to her," Calhoun grits his teeth.
For a moment I admire him for being such a protective husband. He's mourning his best friend, feels bad for his best friends wife who is in turn my
best friend, but he wouldn't sit back and let anyone hurt me, even if that person turns out to be Sapphire.
When Calhoun is near the door, I grab his arm with a mix of concern and caution in my eyes. "Don't make it worse. She's devastated about Bruce.
Let's give her some time to heal," I plead.
Calhoun hesitates and searches my eyes for sometime, before reluctantly nodding. "Fine, but she can't keep hurting people. I'll talk when she's more stable."
