Chapter 189 A Strange Wife
Calhoun's POV
"Kristen, is everything okay?" I ask quietly.
She doesn't even respond, just keeps staring at me with wide eyes as if I have hurt her in the past. And this leaves me concerned.
"Are you trying to pull a prank on me? Get me worried for nothing?" I ask after making sure there's a smile on my face, so as not to make her feel
uncomfortable.
But her mouth parts but no words come out. Just sharp breaths.
Okay, now something is wrong. And as her husband and mate, it's my duty to get her to talk to me.
"Remember when it was nearing your due time with Aiden and we went to the beach? You told me to close my eyes and when I did, you put a dead lizard on my palm," Truly, this was funny. She acted a lot on her hormones then and cried for no good reason. But it was cute to me, and so I showered her with all the love and care in the world, and treated her like an egg.
"And about that day you wept so hard because you felt Aiden was too big inside you, and you were scared you'd be unable to let him out into the world? You were only eight months gone. Remember how I tied a watermelon on my stomach and mimicked you, then you stopped crying and laughed?" I am trying as much as I can to ease the tension here.
But Kristen doesn't even look like she's recalling this. She's shivering now, rubbing the side of her arm as if she's caught a cold. It's already raining outside.
Taking off my jacket, I attempt to put it around her shoulders because she's wearing a simple, off- shoulder beige dress.
But Kristen flinches before I can put the jacket around her shoulders.
And then it hits me hard that something is really wrong and she's not pulling any prank of any sort.
"Are you okay?" As I try to touch my wife, she backs away from me as if I am a monster who is trying to hurt her.
"Come on, tell me what's eating you up," I continue even though what she just did struck pain through me.
"Please speak up and tell me what's bothering you, you're starting to get me worried," I try as hard as I can to keep my cool because it's new to see her like this. She hasn't pulled up this attitude before.
"Get away from me," Kristen warns in a murderous, stern voice.
For a second I throw a swift backward glance to see if anyone is behind me. But I found none. The whole of this place is already reserved for Bruce and Sapphire and not even waiters are present because the two couples are yet to make an order.
Then who is Kristen addressing in that manner?
Is it me, her husband?
"I think I should take you home, maybe it's your pregnancy hormones manifesting," I say quietly, wanting to ease the tension hanging in the air because Kristen hasn't behaved this way before. It's new and rather odd.
"Stop! Leave me alone!" Her sharp yells are enough to draw Bruce and Sapphire's attention to our side.
"Kristen, please tell me what's wrong," I don't even know how she'll react if I take a strong closer to her.
"No, you're dead! I killed you!" Kristen bellows at the top of her lungs like a crazed woman.
And cold runs through me.
Did I hear her correctly or I am starting to have a
hearing problem?
She killed me?
How can she even say such a thing?
What the fuck is going on? We were perfectly fine a
few minutes earlier.
"Kristen..." I say her name after swallowing hard.
"Please, leave me alone! You've tormented me more than enough already," She's walking around as if she has no clue in the exact direction to take.
"How can you not recognize me anymore? We were
happy a few minutes ago," I point out, fighting against the urge to yell and try to make her see me in front of her.
Kristen recoils and steps backward, almost losing her balance from the ill-judged movement.
"Just stay there and don't move, I'll get you out of
those heels so you won't get hurt," I am close to
yelling.
But she doesn't listen to me. Instead, she starts
running towards the exit.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
My heart rises up to my throat because this is too
strange to be happening. One moment we were getting cozy, and the next she's treating me like a stranger and running away from me.
"Kristen!" I call out to my wife as I run after her, but she's running so fast as if her life depends on it.
"Don't get away from me, just calm down, and let's talk this out, okay?" I say in the most soothing voice as possible, trying to make her feel at ease with me, because it's clear something is wrong.
"You're dead! Theodore! I killed you!" She has her small hand fisted to her chest as she keeps walking
backward.
And I go to a halt upon hearing that name.
Theodore is her second mate. The one who tried to
kill me, the same person who kidnapped her, and she ended up killing him before driving for a whole day to
get back to our pack, with his dead body in the backseat of the car.
"Kristen!" I call her name once more, wondering
what the fuck is happening tonight for the umpteenth
time. My wife has kicked off her heels, and she's currently
in the rain.
Is this even real or I am starting to imagine things?
What the fuck is going on!?
"It's me, Calhoun! Your husband. Theodore isn't here!
"My yells get consumed by the growling thunder in the rain.
And Kristen doesn't even cast me a backward glance.
No.
Instead, she shifts and starts running in the rain.
Dammit!
