Chapter 52 Silent to the Claims
Evelyn's POV
The continuous ringing of a phone woke me up from the short sleep I had managed to get after Adrian left.
It was my ringing sound and I looked around everywhere, searching for where the phone was.
My eyes caught my bag which was placed on a table at the other end of the room.
With a deep sigh, I took the IV off my arms and went to get the phone, then I returned to the bed, putting the IV back into place. Not medically advisable but I was already feeling exhausted.
The missed calls were from Eva. I called her back and she picked up immediately.
“Hey, Evelyn,” her voice was down, it was shaky and slightly noticeable.
“How are you?” I asked. I forced a smile to my lips even though she couldn't see it.
“I should be the one asking you that,” she snapped.
I blinked, wondering what had suddenly gotten into her.
“It's all over the internet! You collapsed!” She said, in one breath.
My breath hitched. I didn't expect the reporters to publish the news already. I expected Adrian to fix that.
I wanted to reassure Eva that I was fine but before I could say a word, she started sobbing.
“And your husband…..” she said. She didn't complete the sentence, getting me confused.
“I'm sorry, Evelyn. You shouldn't have married him,” she said.
I shook my head in confusion. “What are you saying, Eva? What about my husband?”
She went silent for a few seconds before her voice rose again. “Wait, you haven't seen it yet?”
See what? But I didn't ask, whatever she's talking about would surely be on the internet.
“I'll talk to you later,” I ended the call before she could object.
The thought wouldn't leave my mind that whatever she's talking about could be traumatic to my health.
Still, I checked. There were photos of Cassandra and Adrian in the tabloids.
The way they both stayed close to each other during the masked party. Even with their masks on, whoever had taken the pictures knew who they were.
My throat tightened and I shut my eyes, trying to digest the picture.
Even though we weren't in love, it hurts. We were married and he should have respected that before making something like this happen in public.
If they were having an affair, if they were still in love with each other then they could have kept meeting privately like they had always done.
I scrolled through my phone, watching other articles. Every single one of them was about Adrian and Cassandra.
My name was also included but as the wife who was never loved and was casted aside just so the main man of the story could end up with his ex.
“If Adrian Kane is still in love with his ex-girlfriend, why then did he get married to another woman?”
Questions arose and I also had no answers for them. Just like the public, I was also in the dark.
A decorative wife who doesn't know anything about the man she married, that's what I was.
Among the rest of the articles, one of the headlines caught my eyes and I blinked.
Are reporters making things up now?
“An Exclusive Interview: Cassandra Vale Claims To Be Pregnant with Adrian Kane's Child.”
I laughed bitterly, my lips parting in surprise. There was no way this could be true but how on earth was I supposed to doubt that when I actually saw them myself?
They couldn't hold their lust back. They kissed in public!
I clicked on the article and read through it. Cassandra held an interview and Adrian hasn't sent out words to deny the claims. A new video alert dropped and I checked.
“Is it true? Is she truly pregnant with your child?” I watched on my screen as my husband was stuck in the midst of reporters.
They asked him questions but he gave no response to any. He didn't acknowledge what Cassandra had said that turned the whole public into chaos nor did he deny it.
“Was Miss Evelyn just a joke from the beginning?” The voices of the reporters echoed through the phone. “Did you just need someone to fill the position of Mrs. Kane?”
“Please say something.”
I faced the screen of my phone downwards, dropping the phone on the bed. My eyes got filled with tears and I didn't even know why.
That reporter was right. From the beginning, I was nothing but a debt exchange.
It had never hurt this much but this moment, learning that the public knows it, and knowing that Cassandra is pregnant with Adrian Kane's child made it hurt like it had never done.
What would happen to me? Will he cast me aside? Will he divorce me?
I've always wanted the divorce, to be free from him but at the moment, it felt like getting divorced by Adrian Kane only meant that I was played with.
I leaned back on the pillow, squeezing my eyes shut and successfully letting a tear slip down from my eyes.
My eyes were forced to open when I heard the closing sound of the ward door.
Adrian was standing in front of the door, his face on me.
Quickly, I wiped the tears that slid down my face. He saw it and I hated that.
He walked in, dropping a package on the table in front of me.
He unwrapped it and there was food. The aroma of seaweed salad and soup filling the air.
I turned my face to him sharply but said nothing.
“The doctor said you can be discharged. Eat this then we can go home,” he said.
I stared at him with a neutral face, no smile, no frown. “Is that all you have to tell me?” I asked.
“What else am I supposed to say to you?” He replied, his arms crossed.
I was getting so angry, my face turning dark, teeth gritting beneath my closed lips.
“Your mistress is fucking pregnant for you!!!” I yelled. “You still don't have anything to tell me?!!”
I didn't know why, but once again, tears blurred my vision.
