Chapter Fifty-Seven

Chapter Fifty-Seven
The days ticked by slowly, each one a reminder that Emma's party was drawing near. Lisa sat in her room, a mix of anxiety and determination swirling in her chest. She'd told Emma that Marcus would be there, that Rachel and Jake would be there. But she still hadn't told Marcus about the party.

As she stared blankly at her phone, Rachel walked into the room, a soft smile on her face. "Hey, Lis. You okay? Have you eaten?" she asked, hovering by the door.

Lisa shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... thinking."

Rachel came over and sat beside her on the bed. "About the party?"

Lisa looked at her, a hint of panic in her eyes. "I haven't told Marcus yet."

Rachel nodded understandingly. "I know. That's what's got you stressed."

Lisa sighed, feeling a mix of emotions. "It's all your fault, Rach," she said, trying to joke but ending up sounding bitter.

Rachel's expression turned serious. "Yeah, Lis. You’re right. I was wrong to tell you that love didn't exist, that connections were fake. I was wrong to make you think it was okay to settle for someone like Marcus."

Lisa looked at her, surprised by the apology.

"I was wrong, Lis," Rachel continued. "I know now that real love exists. I feel it with Jake. And I'm sorry I made you think otherwise."

Lisa felt a lump form in her throat. "Rach..."

Rachel took her hands. "Lis, I'll support you, no matter what. But I think it's time you talked to Marcus. Tell him about the party. See if he can come to reason about... everything."

Lisa nodded, a plan forming in her mind. "I'll call him. I'll talk to him, tell him we need to work on things, that we can't keep going on like this."

Rachel smiled softly. "That's the Lisa I know. You deserve better, Lis. You deserve peace, love, and happiness."

Lisa's eyes lit up with a new plan. "Rach, I have an idea. Actually…, Marcus invited me to a party tonight. Why don't we go together, and you and I can both talk to him?"

Rachel's eyebrows rose in interest. "A party? Tonight?"

Lisa nodded. "Yeah. It'll be a good chance for us to talk to him, and maybe... just maybe he'll listen."

Rachel considered it for a moment before nodding. "Okay, I'm in. We'll go to the party, and I'll talk to Marcus."

Lisa felt a surge of relief and gratitude. "Thanks, Rach. I really appreciate it."

The two friends made plans, deciding to meet at the party that night. As they finalized the details, Lisa felt she was ready to face Marcus, and with Rachel's help, maybe they could finally get him to understand.

The party was in full swing, the music pulsating through the crowded room like a living entity. Lisa and Rachel walked in, turning heads as they made their way through the throng. Lisa was a vision in a fitted red dress, her hair cascading down her back like a waterfall of dark silk. Rachel, on the other hand, was a stunner in a sleek black jumpsuit, her bright smile illuminating the room.

As they entered, Marcus immediately zeroed in on Lisa, his eyes locking onto her like a heat-seeking missile. He strode over to them, a possessive smile spreading across his face. "Hey, baby," he said, his voice loud enough to be heard over the music, his gaze fixed on Lisa like she was the only person in the room.

Lisa forced a smile, feeling a growing discomfort as Marcus's attention became increasingly intense. Rachel, sensing her unease, subtly shifted closer, her eyes never leaving Marcus's face.

Marcus barely acknowledged Rachel, his focus solely on Lisa as he began to show her off to his friends. "Guys, this is Lisa," he said, his arm slinging over her shoulder like a territorial marker. "Isn't she gorgeous?"

Lisa's smile grew strained as Marcus paraded her around the party, introducing her to everyone. Rachel, meanwhile, was doing her best to keep a lid on her irritation, her eyes flashing with concern as she watched her friend being treated like a trophy.

Eventually, Lisa and Rachel managed to extricate themselves, slipping behind the bar for a breather. "We need a plan," Rachel said, her voice low and urgent.

Just as they were about to discuss their strategy, Marcus reappeared, a girl in tow. "Hey, guys," he said, his arm around the girl. "This is Sarah, my friend's girlfriend."

Lisa's eyes narrowed slightly, her voice casual. "Oh, hi."

The conversation was stumbling, the air thick with awkwardness, when Rachel smoothly intervened. "Hey, Marcus, I need to talk to you. Privately."

Marcus nodded, signaling his friends to leave. As they walked away, Rachel turned to him, her voice friendly but firm. "So, there's a party, and we'd love for you to come with Lisa. Emma, Lisa’s friend, is having it."

Marcus's face lit up. "Oh, yeah? Sounds like fun. I'd love to take my girl."

Rachel smiled, her eyes glancing at Lisa. "Great. Just... Jamie will be there."

A sarcastic smile twisted Marcus's lips. "Mm…, okay. Fine. I'll behave."

Rachel's eyes locked onto his. "I need to talk to you more about this, Marcus. Maybe after the party?"

Marcus nodded, his gaze already drifting away. "Yeah, sure. Sounds good."

As he walked off to join his friends, Rachel turned to Lisa, her expression a mix of concern and frustration. "Girl, how are you dealing with this?"

Lisa shook her head, her eyes on Marcus, who was laughing with a group of girls. "I don't know, Rach. I really don't know."

The music pulsed on, the party swirling around them like a chaotic storm. Rachel's eyes narrowed, her mind racing with ways to help her friend escape the toxic web Marcus had spun.
