Chapter Fifty-Six
Chapter Fifty-Six
Lisa sat alone in her dimly lit living room, the only sound was the soft hum of the TV in the background. She was scrolling mindlessly through TikTok when her phone buzzed with a message from Emma. Lisa's heart sank as she saw the invitation to a party with Mike and Jamie. Emma wanted her to bring Marcus, Rachel, and Jake.
Lisa hesitated, her thumbs hovering over the keyboard. She didn't want to go to a party where Jamie would be, not with Marcus. The thought of the two of them in the same room made her skin crawl. But she didn't want Emma to suspect anything was off, so she put on a cheerful facade and agreed to come, promising to bring her friends along.
As she sent the message, a wave of anxiety washed over her. How was she going to get Marcus to agree to this? He'd flip out if he knew Jamie would be there. Lisa's mind started racing with excuses and lies, but she knew she'd have to come up with something convincing.
She thought about feigning illness, saying she wasn't feeling up to the party. But Mike and Jamie would probably show up at her door with get-well wishes, and Marcus would see right through it. She needed a better plan, and she needed it fast.
Lisa glanced at the clock, willing Rachel to come home. She needed to talk to someone, to get advice on how to navigate this mess. Rachel would know what to do.
The silence in the room was oppressive, punctuated only by the occasional tick of the clock. Lisa sighed, feeling trapped. She was going to have to face this head-on, but for now, she'd just have to wait.
Rachel burst through the door, a radiant smile on her face, her arms laden with gifts and flowers. The scent of fresh blooms filled the room, and Lisa couldn't help but be swept up in her friend's infectious energy. Rachel dropped her bags and threw her arms around Lisa, squealing with excitement.
"Oh, Lisa, I'm so happy!" she exclaimed, her voice bubbling over with joy. "Jake is just... wow! He's everything and more. We had the most amazing day, and I just can't wait to tell you all about it."
Lisa smiled, genuinely happy for her friend, and pushed aside her own concerns about the message she'd received from Emma. She didn't want to bring Rachel’s energy down, not when she was joyous like this.
"Tell me everything!" Lisa said, settling in for a long chat. Rachel launched into a detailed account of her day with Jake, from the romantic brunch to the sunset walk. Lisa listened, entrhralled, as Rachel went on about the sweet things Jake had said and done.
As they chatted, Rachel handed Lisa some of the gifts she'd brought home - a beautiful scarf, a book by her favorite author, and a box of artisanal chocolates. Lisa oohed and aahed, feeling a pang of happiness for her friend.
When Rachel finally paused for breath, Lisa brought up the invite from Emma. "Hey, Em just messaged me. She's having a party with Mike and Jamie, and she wants us to come, plus Jake and Marcus."
Rachel's face lit up. "Oh, that sounds like so much fun! Jake will definitely want to come with me. You and Marcus are coming, right?"
Lisa hesitated, and Rachel's expression changed, her eyes narrowing slightly. "What's wrong, Lis? You don't look too thrilled about it."
Lisa sighed, feeling a bit trapped. "It's just... Emma wants me to come with Marcus, and I don't know if he'll want to go. You know he doesn't like Jamie."
Rachel's face fell, and she looked at Lisa with a mix of surprise and disappointment. "Wait, you and Marcus are still together? I thought you guys broke up after that huge argument."
Lisa shrugged, feeling a bit defensive. "We didn't exactly break up. I went to see him, and we worked things out. But, Rach, he's still really possessive and jealous. I don't know how much longer I can keep doing this."
Rachel's expression softened, and she took Lisa's hands. "Lis, why are you still with him? He's toxic, and you deserve so much better. You can't keep making excuses for him."
Lisa pulled her hands away, feeling a surge of frustration. "You don't understand, Rach. You have Jake, and Emma has Mike. Everyone's got someone, and I'm just stuck with Marcus. At least he's someone."
Rachel's eyes widened in shock. "Stuck with Marcus? Lis, that's not love, that's a prison sentence. And it's not because everyone else has someone - it's because you're settling for someone who's not good for you."
The room fell silent, the tension between them palpable. Lisa felt a surge of anger, and the words tumbled out before she could stop them.
"You're just selfish, Rach. You've found your 'real love', and now you want everyone else to be miserable. But I'm not going to be miserable just because you want it."
Rachel's face paled, and she took a step back. "That's not what this is about, Lis. It's about me caring about you and not wanting to see you get hurt.’’
‘’And by the way, I remember you telling me that there's no such thing as a 'real love' or a 'genuine connection'. You said it was all made up, and we just convince ourselves it's real." Lisa's anger flared. "Well… now you have Jake!
The argument raged on, with neither of them willing to back down. The room was thick with tension, the air heavy with unsaid words. They were two friends, once so close, now drifting apart on a tide of hurt and misunderstanding.
As the night wore on, the words became sharper, the emotions raw. They were no longer just talking about Marcus or Jake or Emma - they were talking about their own fears and doubts, their own desires and disappointments.
And in the end, they were left standing, facing each other, the silence between them a chasm they didn't know how to bridge.
