Chapter 139 A Hundred Million
Steps unsteady, mind confused. Jessica stumbled home, feeling her legs' reluctance to return home. She could not blame them though could she?
It weren't just her legs that did not want to go home but her entire body and mind as well.
How could she? She had only recently saved herself from a lifelong of repaying a debt she did not owe so how come she was already in another one? A hundred million!
"Look who's back--"
"Gah!!!" Jessica flinched, throwing her hands up in the air at the voice that boomed from in front of her. How had she not seen her?
Sarah herself was taken by surprise at Jessica's reaction. She took a step backward, staring wide eyed at her. "Oh my goodness, what was that? Why do you look like you have just seen a ghost?"
Jessica let out a soft sigh and composed herself. Clearing her throat, she threw her hair behind her back and said, "would have been better than seeing your face."
Sarah pouted disappointedly. She could not say she was surprised by Jessica's rudeness though. Rather, she smiled. "You don't seem to be yourself lately, could it be because you lost your position and everything is functioning without you?"
Jessica scoffed a laugh, swaying her hips as she walked towards the dining room. "Oh please, functioning? Barely." She rolled her eyes frantically. Reaching for a jug, she started to pour herself a glass of water. "I am barely worried about that anyway since I have decided what I want to do with my time. Something that actually matters to me."
"And what could that be?" Sarah's arms folded underneath her breast and a curious brow arched as she stopped short of Jessica.
Jessica took her time to drink from her glass, receiving an eye roll from Sarah but barely caring. Placing the glass back on the table, she let out a satisfied sigh and turned around to face her mother-in-law.
"Being a good mom." She proclaimed with a soft smile on her face while leaning on the table.
Sarah stared at her in silence, wondering if she had been joking. Actually waiting for her to say she was joking. Upon the realization that Jessica was being honest, she broke out in a loud laughter. "Oh my goodness!" She bent forward and slapped her knees.
Jessica expected such, much more than that even, so she did not let it bother her. She simply stared in disinterest.
When Sarah was done with her madness, she stood up straight and wiped a tear from her eye. "Oh wait... Gah... I can't... I can't believe such words are coming from your mouth or are you not the same ambitious Jessica my son married? Where did she go?" She arched her brow.
Jessica scoffed a laugh and crossed her arms beneath her breast. "Oh she's still right here, she just got smarter and more ambitious and that is actually thanks to you."
Sarah was confused, her head hung backwards slightly as she stared at Jessica, waiting for a clarification.
Jessica rose from the table and stood up straight. "You see, a lot has been going on with Jeremy behind my back that i don't know about and that is just wrong as a mother. Look at you, you were so ambitious as a young growing girl I am sure, I can see the results anyway in all the things you have and your marriage."
Sarah nodded her head in agreement with Jessica's words but did not bother to cut her off or interrupt her.
Jessica was pleased to go on unhindered. "But what you can't see... Or what you refuse to see, is that your ambition paid off obviously with all the cars and company and money but you were a terrible mother and it tells perfectly in your son, the boy you brought up poorly."
Sarah's smile withered, her pride suddenly crumbling to dust. Why did such comment hurt so bad? She did not raise her son poorly, Chris was a good child after all, it was Jessica who was a bad and terrible wife.
She scoffed a laugh. "You really think of my son as a failed project? Do you even have any idea what you are talking about? Chris went to the best schools! He is on his way to ruling the world!"
"And none of that happened neither will it happen with you by his side." Jessica crushed her pride even more with her cruel words.
It was like a talent, she did not even have to think twice before the terrible words left her mouth, crushing the soul of the listener.
Sarah could not help but to fall back on her memories with Chris. There were hardly any. She barely spent time with him, she was too busy conquering the fashion world and making millions for herself.
But it was all for him, for his upbringing. Or was it for her? So she could rank among the richest of the entire city? Was that what it was?
She felt like it was. But she refused to accept it.
She was about to speak but a sinister smile played on Jessica's face. She had lost to her, giving her the satisfaction of a reaction. She felt her nails dig into her skin where she was standing, feeling like a total fool.
If only she had known better than to fall into the trap of such an evil thing as Jessica. She felt so infuriated.
Jessica tucked her hair behind her ear and placed her hand on her hips. With a sigh, she continued, "the last thing i would ever want would be to see my son grow to be a man like his father..." She fell quiet, her smile fleeing her face.
She meant that statement from the bottom of her heart. She really did. The last thing she could ever want would be to see her son, Jeremy, to grow up to be a man like his father, Jayden.
