Chapter 140 Being A Good Mom
Clearing her throat, she brought herself back to reality, her smile returning to her face. "Well... Jeremy is only closing two, still very small and needing of his mother's love. Even if his father is not around to give it, I can be around for him. I will be around for him. I choose to be.
"Thankfully, he is too small now to remember that I once neglected him when he gets older. It is not too late for me to fix our relationship but you... Oh it is too late to fix anything. Your son has even lost his grip on sanity. Tch tch tch... I can only wonder who is to blame for such a thing."
She started out of the dining room and asked Sarah when she got close to her ear. "Aren't you getting late for your business meeting?" With a smile, she walked away.
Sarah stood there, awkwardness flowing like blood inside of her. She felt so confused, her emotions were a mess. She could not understand exactly what she was feeling at that moment and why she was feeling that way.
"Oh..." She batted her lashes, feeling flustered. Cupping her face in her own arms, she tried to tell herself not to feel guilty just because of words spewed from Jessica's vile mouth.
"You know her, she will say anything to bring down your self esteem." She told herself, it was supposed to help but it only mafe her feel worse.
'Is this an excuse for neglecting your own son? Is this your way of shifting the blame? Is Chris really a messed up child? Is my boy really losing his grip on sanity without a mother's love?' She kept asking herself where she stood.
She felt like her head was being swarmed by different intruding thoughts and it was going to explode soon.
Running her fingers through her hair, she walked over to the table then poured herself a glass of water and gulped it down without stopping.
Letting out a deep sigh, she sat herself down before even realizing it and began to retrace her steps in life. Mostly in raising her son.
Jessica was momentarily pleased by Sarah's reaction but then she remembered her own situation and it was not any better. At least Chris got to grow up in wealth with his real rather.
If her own story got out to the public, unlike Sarah who would simply receive criticism from few, she would be criticized and sent out of her home. Everything would be lost and Jeremy would be forced to grow up in a poor background.
She sighed, falling into her bed. But that was not the time to let such dangerous thoughts devour her, rather, she would just do something productive.
So she rose to her feet and walked out of her room. Without wasting any time, she allowed herself into Jeremy's room and he was alone with his carer.
The young carer was sitting on the rug with him, playing with him and jiggling his toys in his face just to make him laugh.
Jessica felt a smile crawl on her face as she heard the sound of her baby's laughter. How long ago had that been?
She had not even remembered that she used to carry him in her arms and rock him to bed when he was much younger, those memories had somehow found themselves in the trash can and hidden away until she discovered them that day.
Then a thought crossed her mind. Cara. Her ex best friend had witnessed everything, the entire meeting with Jayden, only heavens knew what he had told her as well.
She needed to sort that out first, although it weighed down on her heart just like the hundred million dollars did.
Would she even be able to settle anything with Cara? Would Cara even care? She had to try though... Right?
She made herself seen by entering the room fully.
The carer rose to her feet upon noticing her while carrying Jeremy in her arms. "Mrs Knowles! I did not hear you come in. Please forgive me." She gave a deep bow of her head, her heart skipping as she felt like Jessica would give a scolding never to forget in her life.
But she was very surprised at the response she got from the monster she called boss.
"It's fine." Jessica simply responded. A soft smile had fixed on her lips and she reached out for her baby who eagerly reached back for her.
It had been so long, he must have missed her.
"Mama!" He exclaimed with a bright smile on his face.
"Jerry!" She exclaimed in response as she took him in her arms. "Oh look at you all happy and smiling! Did you miss mummy? Mummy missed you too! Let's go get ice cream! Ice cream!"
"I cweam!" Jeremy failed at his attempt to pronounce the word but it only brought a wider smile to his mother's face.
Jessica did not think she had ever felt so full of joy before. Her heart was warm, her mind was at peace, her head was as empty as the desert and oddly calm like a cool breeze.
"I'll take it from here, you don't have to come here anymore." Jessica suddenly announced.
The carer, who had once been smiling, stared wide eyed at her boss. "What?!" The work was well, but the pay was heaven. "Ma'am! Please is it something I did, please don't send me away! Please I can do better, I promise! I will do better, I will make him laugh more than ever--"
"Relax," Jessica cut her off. "You did not do anything wrong, I just wish to be closer to my son. You can remain if you wish, clean up his room and wash his clothes but leaving his care to me. Your pay is still the same so don't worry. Or don't do anything at all, just don't care for him anymore."
The carer was confused but all she could do was nod her head in response. "Y--yes ma'am."
Jessica's smile flickered, what would happen to her?
