CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FOURTEEN
The quiet of the house was suffocating, thick with the weight of everything we’d just revealed. Damon sat beside Kai, his presence steady and reassuring, but I could see the tension in his shoulders, the uncertainty still lingering in his eyes. This was a step forward, but it felt like we were standing on the edge of something much darker.
Kai, still processing the truth, didn’t speak much more. He hadn’t pushed for answers, but I could see the storm brewing behind his eyes. The confusion was there, the hurt, and somewhere beneath it all, a flicker of hope—hope that maybe, just maybe, things could be different.
But I knew better. Hope was a fragile thing, and it wouldn’t be enough to protect us from what was coming.
I sat across from them, my hands tightly clasped together in my lap. I had to keep it together. For Kai. For Damon. But deep down, I felt the gnawing sense that we were running out of time.
The truth had been exposed. Damon was Kai’s father, and Sienna’s twisted game had started to unravel. But we weren’t free yet. Not by a long shot.
“I’ll handle it, Winter,” Damon’s voice broke through my thoughts, low and steady, like a promise. He was looking at me, his eyes unwavering. “I’m not letting her take anything more from us.”
I swallowed hard, nodding. I didn’t doubt his determination, but the fear was still there. Sienna wasn’t the type to go down easily. She wouldn’t just fade into the background. Not while she had power, not while she had leverage.
“She’s not going to stop,” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Damon leaned forward, his hands resting on his knees as he met my gaze. There was a hard edge to his expression now, a resolve I hadn’t seen in him before. “We won’t let her. We’ll find a way to end this. She’s not going to break us, Winter. Not now, not ever.”
I nodded, but inside, doubt churned like a storm. I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were being watched, that Sienna was already planning her next move. I had seen her play her games before—she was unpredictable, dangerous in ways that Damon couldn’t fully understand.
“Have you heard anything from Coach James?” I asked, needing to redirect my thoughts, my focus. “He might know something we don’t.”
Damon’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he thought. “No. But I’ll reach out to him. I don’t think she’ll stop just because I’m back on my feet. She wants something from me, something I’m not willing to give. But she doesn’t know that I won’t give in. She’ll push, but I’ll push harder.”
I could see the determination in his eyes, but I also saw the cracks beneath it—the fear for Kai, the guilt he was still carrying, and the ever-present shadow of Sienna hanging over him.
“We need to be careful,” I said, my voice low but firm. “She’s not going to take this lying down, Damon. She’ll make her next move soon. And when she does, we need to be ready.”
Damon nodded slowly, the gravity of my words sinking in. “We will be.”
But even as he said it, I could see the hesitation in his eyes. The fight was far from over, and we weren’t guaranteed a victory. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that we needed something more than just our determination. We needed a plan—one that would give us an edge over Sienna’s games.
“Let’s get some rest,” Damon said after a long pause, rising to his feet.
“We’ll figure this out. Together.”
Kai had fallen into a light sleep on the couch, exhaustion overtaking him. His chest rose and fell with each shallow breath, and his face looked peaceful for the first time in days. I walked over to him, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. He was safe now, at least for the moment. But I knew that safety was fleeting. Sienna wouldn’t stop until she had us all in her grasp.
I watched Damon as he moved toward the door. “Where are you going?”
“Out,” he replied, his tone unreadable. “I’ll be back soon. There’s something I need to take care of.”
I opened my mouth to protest, but I knew better than to argue when Damon made up his mind. He was determined, and right now, that determination was what we needed. He was out the door before I could stop him, leaving me alone in the quiet house with Kai.
I exhaled, sitting down on the edge of the couch beside my son. I couldn’t afford to lose focus. Sienna would make her move, and when she did, we had to be ready. I only hoped we were.
Damon's POV
The streets were empty at this hour, the air cool and crisp, but it did nothing to quell the storm brewing inside me. Every step felt like I was walking into a trap, but I had no choice. Sienna wasn’t going to leave us alone, and I couldn’t wait for her to make her next move. I needed to make the first one.
I pulled into a dark alley near the edge of town, where I knew I’d find him—the one person who might know how to deal with someone like Sienna. Eric.
I slammed the door shut behind me, my hands tense at my sides. The man had been Damon’s rival for years, but now, with everything on the line, he was the only one who could help me take Sienna down. If he was willing.
He was sitting on the hood of a black car when I approached, his cigarette burning in the darkness. He didn’t look up at first.
“You’re here. Figured you would be,” Eric muttered, his voice dripping with disdain.
“Cut the crap, Eric,” I said, my voice low but firm. “I need your help and I need it now.”
Eric finally looked up at me, flicking the cigarette to the ground. “And why would I help you?”
“Because Sienna’s about to go too far,” I said, stepping closer, my eyes locked on his. “And if you don’t help me, she’ll come after you next.”
For the first time since we’d crossed paths, Eric seemed to pause. He took a step back, then another, before shaking his head.
“You’re not the only one with something to lose, Damon,” he muttered.
“But fine. I’ll help. For now.”
“Good,” I said, feeling the tension in my chest ease just a little. It wasn’t much, but it was a start.
The battle wasn’t over. But with Eric’s help, I was one step closer to ending Sienna’s game once and for all.
The question was: Would it be enough?
The flames that scorched, the heat that burned,
Each day a battle, each step I learned.
I thought the fire would take its toll,
But it forged a strength deep in my soul.
The scars I wear are not of shame,
But badges are earned in this fierce game.
Through every wound, through every fight,
I found my peace; I found my light.
For once, I thought I’d lost my way,
The path too dark, the night too gray.
But in the depths, I found the spark,
A fire within to light the dark.
With every fall, I rose again,
Determined not to break or bend.
The ashes whispered, soft and sweet,
That even from the pain, I’d rise to my feet.
Now the flames no longer scare,
For I know I’ve learned to stand and bear.
What once was fear, now is my fire.
Igniting dreams, fueling desire.
Through every trial, I’ve found my worth,
In the fire, I found rebirth.
And as the smoke begins to clear,
I see a future drawing near.
Winter, you’ve been my strength, my guide,
In you, I’ve found the love I’ve denied.
Together, we’ve faced what others run from,
But in your arms, I’ve found my home.
The fire that once sought to consume,
Now it burns bright, dispelling gloom.
Through it all, we stand as one,
The battle was fought, but never done.
For the fire that once sought to take,
Is now a flame we’ll never break.
And in its warmth, we find the way,
To face tomorrow, come what may.
