CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN
The night felt oppressive, a heavy weight that pressed down on my chest with each breath. The air was thick with tension as Damon and I sped through the darkened streets, our destination clear, but the uncertainty ahead gnawing at my gut.

Damon’s grip on the steering wheel was tight, his knuckles pale against the wheel. His silence was deafening, but I could feel his thoughts swirling, the storm of emotions he was trying to keep in check. The betrayal, the confusion, the guilt. It was all there in the set of his jaw, the slight tension in his shoulders. I wasn’t sure what weighed heavier on him—the possibility that he’d failed to protect me and Kai, or the realization that Sienna was far more dangerous than he had ever given her credit for.

“What do we do when we get there?” I asked quietly, breaking the silence.

Damon’s eyes flicked to me for a moment before focusing back on the road. “We do what we have to do to get Kai back. We’re not leaving without him.”

His words were resolute, but I could see the cracks in his facade. The urgency in his voice, the way his foot pressed harder on the accelerator—it was more than just the need to rescue our son. There was fear behind his words. Fear of losing Kai. Fear of what Sienna was capable of.

As we neared the location Sienna had arranged for the exchange, I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were walking into a trap.
Sienna had always been manipulative, but now, her threats had crossed a line I hadn’t even imagined. She wasn’t playing games anymore; this was real.

Damon parked the car a few blocks away from the warehouse, keeping a low profile. We’d agreed that stealth was our best option.

We couldn’t risk alerting Sienna to our presence until it was too late for her to do anything about it.

“We stick to the plan,” Damon said, his voice steady despite the tension.

“We find Kai, and we get him out. Fast.”

I nodded, even though I wasn’t sure I believed in the plan anymore. My heart hammered in my chest, and the overwhelming sense of dread settled in the pit of my stomach. I had no illusions—this wasn’t going to be simple.

We moved swiftly, our footsteps muffled by the wet pavement as we approached the warehouse. The closer we got, the more the world around me seemed to disappear, leaving only the weight of the moment. The smell of rust and oil mixed with the dampness of the night air. The sounds of distant city life faded into the background, replaced by the thudding of my pulse in my ears.

When we reached the entrance, Damon signaled for me to stay low, his body tense with readiness. He pulled out a flashlight, scanning the area for any signs of movement. We crept inside, the dim light revealing a sprawling interior that smelled of stale air and neglect.

It didn’t take long before we heard voices. Low, hushed murmurs that sent a chill down my spine.

“Stay behind me,” Damon whispered, his hand brushing against mine in a fleeting moment of comfort before he stepped forward.

We crept further into the shadows, drawing closer to the source of the voices. Then, we saw them.

Sienna stood in the center of the room, her back to us, her posture arrogant and self-assured. But beside her, there was no sign of Kai.

Panic clawed at my chest, and I took a step forward, ready to confront her. But Damon stopped me with a firm hand on my arm.

“Wait,” he hissed.

He motioned to the corner of the room, where I finally saw him. Kai, bound and gagged, his small body slumped against a wall. My heart dropped into my stomach.

“Kai!” I whispered, my voice breaking. I wanted to run to him, but Damon held me back.

Sienna’s eyes flicked towards us as she turned, a smirk playing on her lips. “I knew you’d come, Damon. But you’re too late.”

The words hit like a punch to the gut. I knew it was a trap, but the weight of her words still hit hard.

“I don’t care what you think you’ve won,” Damon said, his voice low and dangerous. “You’re not getting away with this.”

Sienna’s smirk widened, and she stepped closer to Kai, her hand running over his hair in a mockingly gentle gesture. “You think you can stop me? You’ve lost, Damon. You’re nothing without me.”

The words stung, but they didn’t break him. I saw the determination in Damon’s eyes, the fire that wouldn’t let him back down.

“Let him go, Sienna,” I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper but filled with as much authority as I could muster.

She laughed, a cruel, hollow sound. “You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed to get this far. To control you both. You’re nothing but pawns in my game.”

It was clear she wasn’t going to let Kai go without a fight. But what she didn’t know was that we were done being manipulated. This was the end.

“Damon, we need to move now,” I said, my pulse quickening.

He nodded, and in an instant, he was on the move, his every step sure and controlled. I followed close behind, ready for whatever Sienna had left in her.

Damon reached Kai first, his hands shaking as he untied the ropes around his son’s wrists. I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the boy I had almost lost.

“We’re getting you out of here, Kai,” Damon said softly, his voice full of determination as he lifted him into his arms.

“Move,” Sienna spat, her hand reaching into her pocket.

But before she could do anything else, Damon turned, grabbing my hand and pulling me with him. We ran, our hearts pounding in sync as we fled the warehouse, Kai safe in Damon’s arms.

Sienna’s fury echoed in the distance, but we didn’t stop. We couldn’t.

The battle wasn’t over yet, but this—this was the turning point.

The weight of the night hung over us as Damon and I hurried back to the car, Kai still cradled in his arms. Every step felt like a victory, but it was a fragile one. We hadn’t won yet, and the shadows of what was still to come loomed over us, the danger far from over.

Kai’s body was limp, his face pale from the trauma, but at least he was breathing. I could feel Damon’s arms tightening around him, as if holding him a little closer would protect him from whatever horrors Sienna had in store for us next. The pain was still too raw, the fear too fresh, but we had to keep moving.

“We need to get him checked out,” I said, my voice hoarse.

“He needs to see a doctor, Damon. We can't risk any lasting damage.”

Damon nodded, his gaze fixed ahead, eyes sharp despite the exhaustion that was etched into every line of his face. “I know. We’ll get there soon. Just... stay with me, Winter. Stay close.”

We didn’t speak much more on the way back. Each of us lost in our own thoughts, the adrenaline of the rescue beginning to wear off, leaving behind a lingering sense of dread. I had never felt so uncertain, so fragile. The danger hadn’t passed. Sienna was still out there, and if there was one thing I knew about her, it was that she didn’t let go easily.

Once we arrived at the house, Damon wasted no time. He carried Kai inside, his steps quick and purposeful. I followed close behind, my mind racing with a million thoughts. Was Kai going to be okay? Would Sienna come after us again? And how long could Damon and I keep pretending that everything was fine, when it clearly wasn’t?

Damon gently set Kai down on the couch, brushing a few strands of hair from his forehead before looking up at me. There was a vulnerability in his eyes I hadn’t seen before. A realization that everything had changed. There was no going back from this.

“We need to tell him, Winter,” Damon said, his voice breaking the silence.

“He’s old enough now. He deserves to know.”

My heart twisted in my chest. I knew what he was saying, and I couldn’t deny the truth in his words. Kai had the right to know who his father was, to understand the complicated mess of emotions and relationships that had led us here. But it wasn’t going to be easy. It never was.

“I know,” I whispered, my throat tight.

“But I’m scared, Damon. Scared of how he’ll take it. Scared of what it will do to him.”

Damon’s gaze softened, and he reached out to take my hand. “I’ll be here. We’ll figure this out together. We don’t have to do this alone.”

I nodded, taking comfort in his words, but the weight of our next step still hung over me. We had already lost so much. How could I tell Kai that everything he thought he knew was about to be shattered?

The sound of Kai shifting on the couch broke our silence. He stirred slightly, groggily rubbing his eyes. I could see the confusion on his face as he looked around, taking in the unfamiliar environment.

“Mom? Damon?” Kai’s voice was soft, but there was a clear note of worry in it. “What happened? Where... where are we?”

Damon and I exchanged a glance. The moment had arrived. There was no more running, no more hiding.

“We’re home, Kai,” I said gently, kneeling beside him. “You’re safe now.”

Kai blinked at us, still trying to process everything.

“But... Sienna... she...

“She won’t hurt you again,” Damon interrupted, his voice steady. “I promise.”

There was a moment of silence as Kai studied him, his young face filled with confusion. Finally, he nodded slowly, though I could see the doubt in his eyes.

“Okay,” he whispered, but I knew that the trust he had in us was shaken. How could it not be? His world had just been turned upside down.

I let out a slow breath, trying to steady myself. “Kai... there’s something we need to tell you. Something important.”

Damon’s grip on my hand tightened, and I knew we couldn’t delay this any longer. We couldn’t protect him from the truth any longer.

“Kai,” Damon said softly, kneeling down in front of him. “I’m your father.”

The words hung in the air like a fragile thread, waiting to snap. I held my breath, my heart pounding in my chest. The world seemed to freeze as I waited for Kai’s response, dreading what might come next.

Kai’s expression didn’t change for a moment. It was as if he was processing the words, trying to make sense of them, trying to figure out if he had heard them right.

“I... I don’t understand,” he said, his voice small. “But... why didn’t you tell me before? Why didn’t you say anything?”

Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, but I blinked them away. The questions were inevitable, and I was ready for them. But that didn’t make the weight of the moment any lighter.

“I’m sorry, Kai,” I said, my voice breaking. “I was scared. I thought it would be too much for you.”

“But why didn’t Damon tell me?” Kai pressed, his brow furrowing. “Why didn’t you?”

Damon exhaled slowly, his gaze never leaving his son. “I wasn’t ready, Kai. I wasn’t sure I was ready to be your father, not the way you deserve. But I’m here now. And I’m not going anywhere.”

The silence stretched between us, and for a moment, it felt like time had stopped. Kai stared at Damon, his young mind trying to reconcile the man who had always been a part of his life with the truth that had just been dropped into his lap.

“I don’t know what to say,” Kai finally whispered.

“You don’t have to say anything,” I told him gently. “We’re all just figuring this out together.”

Kai nodded slowly, as if the weight of the moment was beginning to settle over him. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t easy. But it was a start. A new beginning, in a way.

But even as we began to process this shift, I knew the worst was far from over. Sienna was still out there, her revenge still hanging over us. And I couldn’t help but feel the gnawing worry in my chest—was this enough? Had we done enough to protect Kai, to protect ourselves?

The road ahead was still uncertain, and the battle with Sienna was far from finished. But for now, we were together. And that was the only thing that mattered.

I just prayed we were strong enough to face whatever was coming next.
