Chapter 29
Anita's POV.
It's been a few days since Jasper escaped from prison and this made the whole pack panic, of the fear of being attacked again. I was beginning to feel uneasy about not being able to connect to Jasper, I had to go to the human world to find him.
I grabbed my phone that was lying beside me on the bed and retreated from the room, to see the Alpha. Knocking gently on the door, it was followed by a response.
“Come in.”
I grabbed the knob, opened the door and walked further into the room after I shut it.
Alpha Kaye was seated in his fave armchair, reading something on his phone, and he seemed so engrossed in it.
“Have your seat.” He said to me without sparing me a glance.
I pulled out the chair and sat quietly, waiting for him to pay more attention to me.
“Go ahead, I can hear you.” He broke the silence.
“I think it would be great if I have your attention, Alpha Kaye.” I said politely and slowly.
He glanced glared at me and continued with whatever he was doing.
“You can go ahead.” His deep voice bellowed like a threat.
“I want to go on my business trip, I have some clients waiting for me.”
Instantly, he stopped what he was dropping and looked at me as he slowly dropped his phone on the table that separated us.
“Jasper is still missing, and you intend to go on a business trip?” He snorted.
“I'm sorry but Alpha Kaye, there was nothing serious between Jasper and I. We weren't a thing and I think I've tried enough to find him. This is how far I can go for him, my life can't come to an end because of him. Never!” I growled with my face red.
He stared at me for a while in disbelief.
“He would be very disappointed in her, hearing that come from your mouth.” He snapped.
“Says one who sentenced his best friend to death? Unbelievable how you can be!” I retorted and scoffed.
“I did what I needed to find. He killed Mrs. Jones, there was nothing I could have done to help him.” His voice soft and soothing, but I rolled my eyes at him.
“And this is the best I can do for myself. The only thing I can think of doing right now to take my mind off the whole incident.” I yelled at him, licked my lower lip as I made to continue. “You didn't even deem it fit to inform me. Yet, you proceeded with the prosecution. You would have shown me his grave, right? That was your plan?”
“Calm down, Anita.” He said in a low tone, but I was losing it again.
It felt as much as though I didn't know where Jasper was. It hurts differently to know that this is coming from a person he considered a friend for many years.
“Don't tell me to calm down!” I snapped back at her as my fist caressed the table.
“I understand how you feel.......” I butted in, shaking my head to his words.
“No, Alpha Kaye. You have no idea how I feel, and I bet you can never feel that. You would have reconsidered your proclaim to prosecute your best friend, if you understand the way I'm feeling right now.” My emphasis was more on “best friend.”
“Okay, you can go ahead on your trip.”
I shot him a glare as a spiteful huff escaped my lips.
“Sure. I'll leave first thing tomorrow morning. And if you would act as a best friend to Jasper, which I doubt you are, you'll call me if he comes back to this pack.”
I got up and made to leave, but stopped at the door as I heard him speak.
“I doubt he would be back anytime soon.”
My brows raised in confused, and I tilted my head a bit, “What do you mean by that?”
“Jasper snatched away the two women I love most. He was never a best friend to me as well. And if I find him first, I'll make sure he dies through my hands.”
I swallowed hard at the level of distrust Alpha Kaye has for Jasper, I slightly shook my head and exited the room without uttering another word.
I walked back to my room, brought out a travel box from my closet, and began to pack for my trip. But I also know how smart Alpha Kaye can try to be. So, I had decided to meet with Jasper in a different way in the human world.
Alpha Kaye's POV.
I grinned as I watched Anita exit my office, the thoughts of Mrs. Jones and Anabel clouded my head. To think that I was present during their death and I somehow ostracized it made me feel worse.
“I doubt if I would ever forgive myself for this. But one thing I know is that, I'll make Jasper pay for this.” I thought.
“Anita! Of course, she doesn't seem to know anything about Jasper's disappearance, but we can't tell how far she could go with acting. I'll get someone to tail her.” I concluded I'm my thoughts.
Furthermore, I grabbed my phone, punched in some number and dialed it; it was the chief guard, and he answered almost immediately.
“Good afternoon, Alpha Kaye.”
“Report to my office with immediate alacrity.” I said, ignoring his greeting.
“Okay, Alpha Kaye.” He said, and I ended the call.
A few minutes later, I heard a knock on my door and by scent, I could tell it was the chief guard.
“Come in.” I said while flipping through the pages of a book.
The door flung open, and he walked in, to some distance away from me with his head down in a bow.
“Anita is planning to go on a business trip. My instinct strongly tells me this isn't just an ordinary business trip. I want you to send one of your trusted guards to tail her. Find out if she knows about the whereabouts of Jasper.”
“And if she does?”
The question sent waves of tickles down my body.
“Make sure they don't make it to the next hour.” I said without anything remorse or expression.
