Chapter 158: Someone will visit you

Chapter 158: Someone will visit you
Third person

“I'll get you, I promise,” she swore, and then climbed out of the window, still flashing the knife in her hand.

Karen sprinted to her car and leapt inside. Her shaky hands found the ignition, her eyes on the rearview mirror watching Elliot who was almost closing in on her as she sped away.

Elliot paused to catch his breath, his hands on his waist as he watched the back of Karen's car helplessly. Then immediately, he rushed inside to check up on the women.

He apologized to the frightened women, then he cleaned Frances’s wound.

Afterwards, he called Lucas to inform him. And as expected, Lucas was fuming.

Valerie sat on the hard chair, her fingers drumming on the desk as she waited with her eyes fixed on the door where Adam would emerge.

An officer brought him out, his wrists cuffed to a chain around his waist. His eyes met Valerie's, and his face brightened.

Adam looked worn out, his skin pale and his eyes sunken. His hair was disheveled, and his clothes were wrinkled. He looked older, his youthful energy drained from his face.

He sat down, the spark still glinting in his eyes. "It's you," he said, his voice tingling with excitement. "When I heard that there was someone here to see me, I didn’t think that it was you.”

Valerie didn't respond. Instead, she rummaged through her bag, her eyes avoiding Adam's.

Adam continued, "But still, my instincts told me that you couldn't just forget me here. Ashley, who loved me so much, wouldn’t just disappear, not after everything we've been through.”

He shook his head. “The woman I loved couldn't just forget me because of a few plastic surgeries."

Valerie pulled out a paper from her bag and placed it on the desk. Adam's eyes widened as he read the heading and saw that they were divorce papers.

"What are these?" He asked, confusion etched on his face.

Val eyed him. “Fresh divorce papers," she deadpanned. She couldn't, for the life of her, wrap her head around why Adam always acted surprised whenever she brought divorce papers. Did he truly think she'll take him back?

Adam frowned. "Why do you keep being like this, Valerie?” His hands clasped together, tried to reach for her, the chain on his wrists jiggling. She leaned back, avoiding his touch. “I love you too much. I can't give you a divorce."

"Please, just withdraw the charges," He begged. "Forgive me, baby. Karen was manipulating me. My in-laws forced me. I didn't want to do it."

Valerie chuckled bitterly, a hint of amusement coloring her tone. "Stop it,” she snapped. “You're not going to manipulate me with your lies. I was there, for fuck's sake.” Her voice was rising, anger coursing through her, but she hid it well behind a grind of her teeth. “Nobody manipulated you. You pushed me into the water. You called me obese.”

Adam huffed at the reminder and then he crossed his arms, his hands clutching his chest."Insult me all you want, Valerie," he murmured. "Insult me if that will make you feel better.”

“...Just as long as you'd forgive me.” He paused and peered at her. “If you get me out of here, I promise I won't bother you again. I'll leave quietly. I'll give you two of my blessings."

“Your blessings? The hell will I do with that?” She laughed bitterly. "There's no walking free for you, Adam. You'll rot in here, and you'll pay for everything you've done."

Valerie groaned internally. Why does every conversation with Adam have to be a hassle?

Adam frowned at her statement, his eyes narrowing on her with conviction. “Then you clearly want to keep being married to me.”

Valerie stood up, frustration etched on her face as she picked up her things and walked out of the room.

“I'll be waiting for you,” he called out as she walked away.

Outside, Lucas was leaning against his car when he saw the frustration etched on Valerie's face. He'd wanted to go in with her, but she insisted that she could handle it alone. ‘He is restrained, and this is a police station, remember?’ She'd said.

Plus, he didn't even want to set his eyes on that bastard.

"Did he sign it?" Lucas asked his woman as soon as she reached him.

Valerie’s jaw tightened. “No,” she stated flatly. Not wanting to think about it, she got into the car and put on her seatbelt. “Let’s just leave. I’ll try again tomorrow.”

Lucas didn't get into the car with her. Instead, he walked over to her side and opened the door. He leaned on the car roof and extended a hand. “Where are the papers?” he asked.

Valerie glanced at him, wondering what was going on.

“Give them to me,” he instructed softly.

Her eyes widened with curiosity. “What do you want to do?”

Lucas’s eyes locked onto hers. "Trust me?"

She raised a brow and nodded firmly. "Yes."

"Then give me the divorce papers."

Valerie hesitated for a moment, then pulled the paper from her bag and handed it to him.

“Just a minute.” He leaned forward and kissed her before stepping away. He was fed up with Adam always trying to make things difficult.

When Lucas entered, Adam was just getting up from his chair with a smirk. The guard escorting Adam bowed slightly in greeting to Lucas, and he nodded in response.

"Mr. Smith," Lucas called out, his expression unreadable.

Adam turned, a hint of smugness in his eyes. "Yes?"

"I’ll have a word with you." Those words, spoken so calmly, held a sharp edge.

Adam turned around, and Lucas gestured for him to sit. He did as he was told. "I've already told Valerie what I wanted to say,” Adam began, an air of arrogance in his tone. “If you want me to leave you people alone, you'll have to get me out of here."

Lucas, who was standing beside Adam, chuckled, the sound sending a shiver down Adam's spine.

He lifted his leg and stepped on Adam's hand that was resting beside him on his chair. Adam groaned in pain, but that only made Lucas press his designer shoes harder on the man's fingers. Stinging pain radiated throughout Adam's body, and beads and beads of sweat dripped down from his face.

"You know that if you die here, you're automatically divorced from my woman, right?" Lucas began, his cold and chilling tone sending a shiver down Adam's spine.

“Your woman? She's my wi—” Lucas's legs pressed even harder on those fingers again, the rest of Adam's words drowning in a pained groan.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” Adam yelled out in pain.

"Tonight, when you go to sleep, someone will visit you,” Lucas continued in a low growl. “And he'll make sure you take your last breath.”

The pain that radiated from his left hand was too much for him to attempt to pull out of Lucas’s hold. Instead, he used his right hand to push Lucas off..

But Lucas was stuck in place like glue.

Adam trembled. "You! Y-you wouldn't dare," he stuttered.

Lucas leaned forward. “I would,” he muttered. “I've been stepping on your fingers for a couple of minutes now.” He glanced at his foot, which was still resting on top of Adam's fingers—tight enough to prevent Adam from slipping his fingers out and loose enough so that Adam wasn't groaning in pain right now—and then at the guard by the door. “But he hasn't said anything.”

Adam turned to look at the man too. “Get this man away from me,” he said to the guard.

The man faced them, and Adam let out a relieved sigh. Finally, they'll get this bully away from him, he thought.

After the guard bowed at Lucas in greeting again, he turned around and faced the wall once more.

Adam's eyes widened at the man's actions, his chest heaved, and his heart pounded in fear. Lucas continued, "Or maybe someone will attack you during dinner. Just two inmates fighting. Or perhaps someone might hang you in your sleep.”

He paused, a thoughtful expression clouding his features. “Tomorrow, they'll say, 'Businessman Adam committed suicide in his prison cell.'"

Adam's panic was palpable, his breathing heavy with fear. "You're bluffing," he murmured, his eyes searching Lucas's face.
