Chapter 466 Worth It

Chapter 466 Worth It
AMELIA

I'm afraid of opening the door.

I've been standing here for a full minute with my heart in my throat. My hand is on the knob, ready. I can't bring myself to turn it, though, simply because I know that Damien's on the other side. There's a lot we need to talk about, so much in fact that I wouldn't know where to start.

I hold my breath and close my eyes. I've been standing out here for too long. I remind myself that he's my husband, he's the man I love, and we'll get through this. We'd get through anything together. I've been in a far worse position before. This time, I was actually focusing on the well-being of our family.

I open the door slowly.

Only the bedside lamp is on. I see him right away; he's seated on the couch across his bed. He's staring out the window with a distant look in his eyes. I take a few steps towards him, my eyes on his handsome face. My heart's thumping against my chest. I'm overcome with emotion, but I put a hamper on them for now. He's a little pale, I notice it right away. He's lost some weight, but it's barely noticeable. His hair is a little bit longer than he usually keeps it too, but he's well. I'm relieved that he's well. He doesn't look sickly or debilitated, not from here. I haven't seen him in weeks. I haven't held him in weeks.

He didn't even look when I opened the door. I don't think he knows it's me. I don't want to alarm him by calling out his name, he looks so peaceful and calm. Seeing him like this breaks my heart. It's four in the morning and it's clear that he didn't sleep a wink, and it's all my fault.

This night has possibly been the longest of my entire life. Roger was knocking on my door seven minutes or so after I called him. His eyes were wide as he took in my appearance. I was already fully dressed in the clothes I wore this afternoon, so I could tell that he was confused.

I told him everything quickly. I couldn't stop thinking of those men that were accompanying Ash. They could come looking for him, Devon couldn't be sure of anything. What if Ash gave them a call every hour to ensure that he was alright? Anything's possible, so we couldn't waste any time.

I told him that Ash Rockford was dead and that I had no idea of what to do. Should we hide the body? Leave it? There are people downstairs who saw me with him. I didn't catch anyone's eye, but there are cameras downstairs, I'm sure of it. If we left the body, the police would have to get involved. No one would be able to guarantee my safety then. Damien has a lot of friends, that's true, but he doesn't have control of the judicial system. If I get arrested, no one will be able to save me.

Getting rid of the body wasn't going to be possible, though. It's not like Damien owned that hotel, there were too many people around. I paced around my room while Roger went next door to make sure whether Ash was truly dead. I could tell by his facial expression that he was.

"You tied him up?" he asked me. It's the first time Roger questioned me about anything. Again, I was determined not to mention Devon's name, so I told him that I hit him with a baseball bat when he turned his back to me and I struggled to tie him to that chair. It took a lot of time and effort, but I managed. He had questions, like where the bat even came from, but he didn't voice them. He said, "You've got to call Jack Huntington. Tell him his messenger is dead."

"Then what?" I asked. Wouldn't Jack Huntington get me arrested for killing Ash? I didn't think about any of that when I decided I had to kill Ash. I wasn't expecting things to get so complicated.

"Then we leave," he said. "Let him send someone over here to clean this mess. It's not your job."

"What if he calls the police?"

He laughed. "He'd never dream of doing such a thing. He's got a lot to lose if the police gets involved."

He handed me a phone that could only have been Ash's. I looked at it for the longest time before unlocking it. Thankfully, all it took was a swipe of my thumb. If he had face ID, we'd have a bigger problem. He no longer had a face. I didn't mean to look earlier, but looking was inevitable.

Finding Jack Huntington's number was easy; dialing the number was not. My hands were trembling as I held the phone that belonged to a dead man. It felt invasive, going through his contacts. It felt worse than shooting him. The whole scene with Devon felt like it happened ages ago. Roger stood before me, calm as ever. He didn't rush me, but he didn't have to. I knew I had to hurry up or I'd get us both caught.

Jack Huntington picked up right away. His voice was gruff, it was the first time I ever heard him speak. "How'd it go with the Keller bitch? Did you get what you wanted?"

I cleared my throat then. His words emboldened me. I said, "I regret to inform you that he didn't get what he wanted, Jack Huntington."

He was silent for quite some time. He must have figured out who I was, because he didn't ask who I was. "Where's Ash?"
