Awakening the Beast
The smell of rain permeated the air as the wind howled through the trees. Eliot stood on the edge of the meadow, his pulse pounding in his ears and his heart pounding. The change was happening more quickly now, and the anxiety that had previously seized him at every step was gradually changing into a hunger and a need.
Inside him, he sensed the wolf pacing restlessly and pressing against the thin layer of his human form. The dreams were becoming more realistic and vivid every night. He was no longer able to keep them apart from his everyday existence. He was pulled toward the woodland by an inexplicable power. He was no longer able to deny it.
"You're not prepared for this, Eliot." Like a razor, Lukas's voice sliced through the quiet. With his presence acting as an anchor in the storm that was building inside Eliot, he took a step forward.
Eliot answered, his voice rasping with anguish, "I don't think I have a choice anymore."
Lukas examined him, evaluating the situation with keen eyes. There was danger to the pack. Eliot was still fighting to recover his identity, and Tobias, the opposing alpha, was on the way. With her own suffering consuming her, Leah had grown more aloof in recent days, but their tie would eventually draw her back. But Eliot was ultimately responsible for the pack's destiny, and at the moment, he was barely surviving.
"Restrain yourself," Lukas advised. "Now's not the moment to lose it."
However, Eliot sensed the change inside of him, the wolf snatching for release, and then everything was dark.
Eliot's body twisted, muscles tensing, bones shattering, a searing heat burning through his side. Eliot disappeared into the trees as Lukas lunged for him, his howls resonating through the darkness.
The fire's warmth did little to relieve the stress in Leah's chest as she paced back and forth in the little cabin. No matter how hard she tried to run, she was unable to break free from the pull of the mate bond, which she could sense in him, Eliot—Caden.
The way she felt about him was a twisted mess. She wanted to accept the connection and think that he was really the same guy, but she couldn't trust him again because of the part of her that had been so severely wounded.
From the doorway, Natalie said, "You have to stop this," interrupting Leah's train of thinking. "Avoiding him won't bring you any serenity. You must confront it.
Leah glanced at her, her annoyance rising to the surface. "No, Nat, I'm not running. I'm defending myself.
Natalie retorted, "But you can't defend yourself from what's inside you," taking a step closer. "Whether you like it or not, you were destined for him."
The words pierced Leah's heart like a dagger, causing her breath to catch. Given how deeply the man she formerly loved had hurt her, she wasn't prepared to confront this reality. And yet here she was, repeatedly drawn back to him. There was no denying the connection.
Through the night came a wail. It was Eliot's howl, not just any howl. She stopped. It was a genuine, primordial wail of agony. She was aware of its meaning. The danger they all faced was growing as the wolf inside him came to life.
Her heart was racing in her chest as she turned to run, but she was stopped by an unexpected voice.
"Leah, it's time."
Standing at the edge of the clearing, Tobias kept a watchful eye on the pack. The woods were illuminated in an unsettling way by the full moon that hovered overhead. He had waited for the ideal opportunity to attack with patience. And now that Caden, or rather Eliot, was about to lose control, the time had come.
He watched the pack's movements with narrowed gray eyes. Leah—Leah was different, but Lukas was with Eliot. The shift in her was palpable to him. He had known her before, but she had changed. A mixture of hatred and longing twisted his heart.
Isabella's icy, piercing voice spoke up behind him, "Tobias, it's too late." Her dark eyes shone with determination as she took a step forward. "You are aware of what must be done. He is no longer the owner of the Silverfang pack.
With his betrayal still weighing heavily on him, Tobias clinched his fists. When Isabella promised him the ability to retrieve what was rightfully his, he trusted her and followed her. A part of him, however, questioned whether he had made the wrong decision when he saw her standing there.
Tobias remarked softly, "It's not just about the pack anymore." "It's about the truth, and Eliot's metamorphosis is just the first step."
A smile curved Isabella's lips. "We will then ensure that he does not survive it."
Tobias took a step forward, and with a single, quick gesture, he told his followers to close in.
Eliot's wolf instincts took control as his senses blazed as he ran through the trees. The terror of what he may become if he didn't gain control over himself was far worse than the excruciating anguish of the metamorphosis. The more he attempted to subdue the wolf, the more it resisted.
Staring at the familiar figure ahead, he skidded to a stop in the clearing, his breath coming in ragged gasps. Leah.
He snarled, his voice heavy with the change in tone, "You shouldn't be here." The wolf struggled against him, and his body shook.
Even if Leah's eyes softened, the suspicion and caution were still deeply ingrained in them. Her voice broke as she murmured, "Eliot." "You are not alone in this battle."
Eliot's chest constricted as he stepped forward. "Leah, I'm not who you believe me to be. I'm still attempting to discover my identity.
Footsteps came closer, and the air was heavy with Tobias's and his pack's scent. From behind him came Tobias's voice, "Eliot, you're right about one thing." "You've changed from who you were."
As the pack surrounded them, their eyes shining with hunger, Leah's heart raced. Tobias took a dominating stance and fixed Eliot with an implicit challenge as he stepped forward.
"Enough with the games," Tobias snarled. "This is over now."
Instinctively, Eliot's wolf growled and let it out of his throat. "Tobias, it's not your battle."
Leah took a step forward, her voice steady yet passionate. "This is not required of you. There is no need for us to fight.
A twisted smile twisted Tobias's lips. "Leah, you cannot avoid the truth. He is not who you believed him to be.
For a brief moment, Eliot caught a glimpse of the man he once was—the Alpha, the protector—as a boom of thunder reverberated across the sky. A wave of strength flooded the air as his memories, his real self, surged within him.
As Eliot's wolf charged forward, the ground shook, and Leah prepared for the impending storm.
