The Eye of the Storm
The electricity swirled furiously around Leah as she stood at the edge, her heart pounding. The breach pulled at her like an unseen hand, now an unstable tempest of light and dark energies. Leah had finished listening, but the sound of the shadow's taunts continued to resonate in her consciousness. The shadows didn't want her to be that person.
The voice of the shadow-Leah scoffed from the shadows, "You've already failed." "I'm too strong for you. You're not going to win.
As the rift's power grew stronger, feeding off her doubts and terror, her eyesight became blurry. Leah, however, retaliated this time, more forcefully than previously. Her heart pounded as she mustered all her strength and concentrated on the one, indisputable fact that had kept her rooted during this ordeal: she was not alone.
She whispered, "You're wrong," to the shadow, to herself, and to the rift. "I am not you."
Her voice was unflinching, like steel. Determined to put a stop to this once and for all, the light in her palms flashed as she reached for the center of the rift.
The ground beneath her feet cracked open as her hands touched the whirling energy, which retreated like a serpent. With a thunderous roar, the earth split as her body was drawn in.
With the specter of his previous self looming in front of him, Eliot peered into the abyss, his breath coming in short gasps. With a distorted approximation of his own voice, the shadow laughed.
"You think you can defeat me?" it asked in jest as it gained ground. "You are nothing but the reflection of your own failures."
Gritting his teeth, Eliot resisted the darkness's attempt to enter his head. His fists shook with the fire of rebellion rather than fear. He refused to be caught in this trap. He could not allow the shadow to rule him.
"I’m not you," he snarled, his hands clenched. "I’m me."
The shadow hesitated, its grin turning to a menacing sneer. "You think that's true? Do you believe that you are unique? You, like me, are a puppet. Your break is just a matter of time."
Even though the words felt like a kick to the stomach, Eliot remained unfazed. Now, he concentrated on Leah, the only thing that counted. He couldn't leave her fighting this battle by herself because she was in the middle of the storm.
Eliot was knocked off his feet by a powerful wave of electricity that sped through the air. He glanced up in time to see the darkness looming closer, reaching out to seize him.
Leah battled with all of her strength, even though her body was trembling as the force of the rift attempted to engulf her. It was more difficult than she had ever imagined, yet every ounce of her will cried out to escape the rift's hold. Like quicksand, the force of it dragged her deeper, threatening to drown her.
The voice of the shadow-Leah teased her from inside her thoughts, "You can't escape." "I own you. "You've always belonged to me," Leah said, gritting her teeth and fighting the need to let the darkness control her. After everything they had gone through, she was determined not to give up now. She had previously triumphed in numerous conflicts with herself. This was just another altercation.
"Not today," she said in a raspy voice. Focusing all her attention on the light, she brought her hands to the rift once more.
The turbulence of the rift grew, and the world around her started to blur. But Leah became more focused. She needed to wait.
She caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of her eye just as her energy was starting to drive the darkness back. The same energy was emanating from Eliot's body as he fell into the rift. The split was crumbling around them, but he was on his way to her.
Eliot's eyes grew wide as the rift engulfed the area surrounding him. He sensed the darkness's weight tugging at his own being. The pressure and the strength made his body hurt, but Leah was the only thing preventing him from breaking.
He beckoned to her, his hands shining as he extended his arm. "Leah!" Desperate, his voice broke through the atmosphere.
For a split second, the tempest surrounding them appeared to subside as Leah's eyes met his. She reached for him, the light flickering in her palms, but the rift was too strong, too powerful. He was unable to contact her.
"You’re both mine," the shadow snarled, its voice now pervasive, echoing through the seam. "Together, you’ll be perfect."
Eliot was almost crushed under the weight of the words. He was on the verge of being overcome by fear. Was he merely a puppet in the dark's grasp? Was this the last time?
The world shuddered around them as the shadow extended both hands. The force of it surged at Eliot. Leah's face was visible to him, her eyes wide with terror, and suddenly all was dark.
Eliot's cry had ignited something deep within Leah, causing her body to shiver as she tried to contain the force of the breach. She was unable to lose him. Not right now. Not after all that they had endured.
She shouted and pushed forward, straining every muscle in the process. The darkness around her was illuminated by her blazing light. She was fighting back against the might of the rift.
Leah yelled, "We are not yours," with a passionate conviction in her voice. "We won’t be your slaves!"
Under the force of her words, the fissure shook as though it were alive, its strength wavering. With their hands inches apart, Leah reached for Eliot, her heart racing.
The shadow wailed abruptly, its shape undulating and twisting as the dark and light battled. The pressure was so great that the rift gave way.
A burst of light and darkness occurred as their fingers touched, and Leah felt herself plummeting—right into the center of the storm.
