Broken Connections
As Eliot's change clawed at him, his breath came in sharp gasps, each second extending into an eternity of agony and suffering. His skin scorched and his bones broke, and the wolf's hunger nearly overtook him. Despite his best efforts to regain control, the wolf's strength was too great, and he staggered forward.
"Remain back, Leah!" His voice was rough and strained, a combination of human and animal, the wolf demanding freedom.
At the edge of the clearing, Leah stood motionless, her pulse pounding and her eyes wide. He was unlike anything she had ever seen. His muscles were rippling beneath his skin, and the energy of his changing shape was permeating the air around him. She was aware of the threat; she was aware of his internal conflict. This, however, was different.
“Fight it, Eliot!” With hesitation, Leah stepped forward and let out a cry. There was no denying their bond, and for a split second, she could sense the wolf's pain and wrath. Though she wasn't sure how, she wanted to assist and get in touch with him.
Eerie blue light glowed in Eliot's eyes as a guttural growl rumbled from his throat. The wolf was nearby, and Leah's presence didn't matter to it. Eliot was drifting farther and farther away as the darkness of the metamorphosis overcame him.
Eliot gave a last shout and fell to his knees, gripping his head in pain. Despite being close to the surface, the beast wasn't prepared to release go. Not yet.
A wolf's cry relieved the stress. Out of the darkness came the enemy pack. Tobias.
With his gray eyes shining with ill intent, Tobias entered the clearing. His pack trailed behind him, their wolves circling, poised for combat. The air grew more tense, and Leah felt the pressure pressing down on her chest.
With Tobias present, the stakes were higher than ever before, and Eliot's metamorphosis was still unfinished.
"Caden, you ought to have remained dead," Tobias spit out in a poisonous tone. This pack is now mine. Additionally, you— He continued to kneel on the ground, struggling to maintain his composure, and sneered at Eliot. "You're just a feeble copy of the real Alpha."
The wolf inside Eliot responded to Tobias's words with a low-pitched snarl, but he had not yet completely changed. His inner fight raged as his human side struggled against his wolf impulses. One thing, however, Tobias was correct: Eliot was no longer the Alpha, and the pack required him to be.
Feeling the pull of their relationship more intense than ever, Leah took a step forward, her heart racing. "Tobias, you don't have to do this," she replied firmly in spite of the terror that was eating at her.
Cold and nasty, Tobias's laughter reverberated through the night. Do you truly believe you can stop me, Leah? You've been weak all along. At all times.
"Leah." Eliot was straining to maintain his humanity, and his voice was no more than a whisper. He reached for her, his hand trembling, his eyes looking up at her in desperation. "Please help me."
Tobias leaped at Eliot, aiming for his throat, before Leah could react to the loud snap that reverberated through the trees.
Leah followed her gut. She rushed ahead without thinking, smashing her shoulder into Tobias's side and throwing him off balance. With his eyes glowing with rage, Tobias immediately regained his balance after being caught off guard by the action.
Ready to attack, he muttered, "Leah, you're playing with fire."
Leah, however, had lost her fear. She was determined to keep them together, and she could feel the strength of their relationship pulsing through her. She answered in a firm, uncompromising voice, "You'll have to kill me first."
Tobias's pack closed in behind him as he narrowed his eyes. He continued, "I don't have to kill you, Leah." "You've already gotten lost."
Eliot stood up during the distraction, his body half-shifted, his eyes sparkling, his muscles expanding. Even though the wolf was nearly in control, Eliot's consciousness continued to resist it.
"No," he replied, clenching his jaw. "I refuse to allow him to win."
His wolf fully taking control, he roared and sprang forward. He swung his claws at Tobias, who ducked and just missed his target. The rival alpha mocked Eliot with a sneer.
"Caden, is this everything you have?" Tobias sneered. In the absence of your pack, you are nothing.
Leah watched in dread as the effects of Eliot's metamorphosis became apparent. Every movement he made showed how his body was struggling against the wolf inside of him.
Eliot's eyes were ablaze with pain, and his body became rigid. The battle was losing him. Leah knew then and there that she was the only one who could save him.
Leah moved closer without hesitation and met Eliot's gaze. Their connection grew stronger, and Leah experienced a burst of strength for the first time. She had no idea where it originated, but it didn't matter to her. He needed to be saved by her.
Her voice was desperate as she said, "Eliot, I won't let you go."
The air crackled with raw, untapped strength as she projected a pulse of energy, as if in answer. The wolf within Eliot paused, and he stopped in the middle of his growl, his body shaking. He recognized Leah's calm, reassuring aura.
Watching the discussion with increasing bewilderment, Tobias froze. With his eyes widening as the power between Leah and Eliot grew stronger, he whispered, "What… is this?"
Leah moved closer and extended her hand. She whispered, "You're not alone anymore," her voice echoing with the impact of her words.
There was a short glimpse of the guy Eliot used to be in Leah's eyes as they flickered. Caden flickered. As their relationship deepened, the beast retreated as the metamorphosis slowed and Eliot's body relaxed.
However, Tobias growled and his pack advanced just as hope was starting to grow. He roared, "Enough of this," and charged ahead.
With his eyes icy with rage, Tobias sprang at Leah before she could react. She prepared for the blow.
As Tobias's enormous body approached her, time appeared to slow down, but Leah was stopped in his tracks by a whirl of movement. With the velocity of a freight train, Eliot, now completely changed, crashed into Tobias, sending the rival alpha sprawling to the ground.
Leah stumbled back, seeing the two strong wolves battle, her heart racing in her breast. Tobias was dwarfed by Eliot's powerful physique, but the battle was far from finished. Tobias was quick, and his agility was a lethal advantage. He recovered quickly.
"You believe you can defeat me, Caden?" Tobias spat, his hateful eyes blazing. "I am the real Alpha. All you are is a shadow.
Eliot's snarl, raging and primal, echoed across the atmosphere. With a shout that shook the treetops, he declared, "I am Caden." Additionally, I've changed as a guy. You'll never prevail.
With their teeth bared and their claws slashing, Leah stared helplessly as the two alphas engaged in a vicious combat. The man she loved was making a sacrifice, and she couldn't just watch him do it.
Leah took a step forward and held up her hand as she felt her inner strength return. She screamed, "Stop," her voice booming with determination.
