Chapter 49
The first thing James saw when he woke up was Nova holding him tightly, her arms wrapped around him as though afraid to ever let go. Her eyes were wide, brimming with tears that slid silently down her cheeks. Her face was pale and drawn, yet lit with a deep sense of relief and joy. For a long moment, James could only blink, confused by the soft light above and the warmth around him. His mind was hazy, thoughts moving like smoke drifting through his skull. He tried to move, but even that simple action felt far away, like he was watching someone else from inside a fog.
He opened his mouth slowly, his voice a fragile murmur. “What… happened? Am I… dead?”
His words were hoarse and barely audible, but Nova heard them clearly. She shook her head quickly, her lips trembling as she tried to hold back another wave of tears. “No,” she whispered, “you’re not dead. I promise, I won’t let you die.”
She leaned forward, pressing her forehead gently to his, holding him as if she could anchor him to the world with her warmth and presence alone. She stroked his hair and kept repeating soft, calming words that barely reached his ears, but the emotion in them was unmistakable.
James blinked again, trying to take in his surroundings. He could hear someone breathing nearby and the soft rustle of robes. His eyes shifted, and he saw Isabella standing a short distance away. Her arms were crossed, and her face was calm, but the deep breath she let out betrayed the tension she had been holding. Relief radiated from her in waves.
Watching James awaken brought a weight off her chest. The worst was over. For now.
Nova pulled back just enough to look into James’s eyes again, and only then did she realize her hands were still pressed tightly against his chest. She glanced down at them, then slowly raised them to eye level. They were trembling, her fingers stained faintly with soot and dirt. But beneath that was something else. Something more powerful.
Her heart pounded as she stared. These were the same hands that had struggled to control even the smallest flicker of fire, the same hands that had failed her in training sessions, that had faltered under pressure and frustration. And yet, with these very hands, she had just accomplished something she had never thought possible.
She had summoned her fire. Controlled it. Not for destruction, but for healing.
Even more than that, she had merged her flame with Oliver’s wood element. She had felt it clearly—the warmth of her fire folding into the cool pulse of Oliver’s magic, the two energies twisting together not in conflict, but in harmony. And from that fusion, something entirely new had emerged. A pure elemental force. It had moved through her as though it had always been part of her, yet she knew this power had only awakened now, in this very moment.
Isabella had been watching her closely, and now she stepped forward. Her expression softened as she saw the wonder and disbelief on Nova’s face. She rested a gentle hand on Nova’s shoulder and gave it a small, reassuring squeeze.
“See?” Isabella said in a low voice. “I told you. Your power is far stronger than I expected. You’ve only just begun to understand it, but what you did today... it was something most elementalists spend their lives trying to achieve.”
Nova turned to her, speechless for a moment. She opened her mouth to respond, but a dozen questions flooded her mind at once. Her brow furrowed as she tried to settle on one. Finally, she asked the one that had been bothering her most.
“But how is it possible?” she said, glancing down at her fingers again. “These elements… they’re so different. Fire is wild and aggressive. Wood is calm and patient. Shouldn’t they fight each other when they come together? Shouldn’t I be feeling… something dangerous? Like a struggle inside me?”
Isabella nodded slowly, her gaze thoughtful. “That is usually the case,” she said. “Each element has its own nature, and most of the time, forcing them to mix leads to instability. When fire meets wood in battle, the wood burns. When wood resists fire, it smothers it. But what happened to you was different. Your power isn’t just strong, it’s adaptable. It doesn’t force the elements to obey. It harmonizes them.”
Nova listened closely, letting the words sink in.
“When you guided that power just now,” Isabella continued, “you didn’t command fire to dominate wood, or wood to resist fire. You let them meet. You let them learn from each other. That’s a gift very few possess.”
Nova lowered her eyes, considering everything Isabella had said. The idea that her powers were different—special, even—was overwhelming. She had never imagined herself as extraordinary. Until recently, she had doubted she even belonged among those training to be elementalists at all.
But now, something was shifting inside her. The fear that had always sat heavy in her chest was being replaced by something else. Not pride, exactly, but hope. A sense of possibility.
Still, another thought crept in.
“If I can do this,” she said quietly, “does that mean… does that mean I could learn to merge more than just two elements? Could I really become strong enough to handle all five?”
Isabella smiled gently. “It won’t be easy,” she said. “Fusing two elements is already something most elementalists never achieve. To awaken and merge all five… that’s the work of a lifetime.”
She stepped back, her tone filled with quiet certainty. “But it is possible. The greatest elementalists in history were able to do just that. They could awaken and unite all five elemental powers into one seamless force of pure energy. Their power was unlike anything the world had seen.”
Nova’s eyes widened. She had heard stories, of course. Legends of the ancient masters. But to hear Isabella speak of them like they were real, like what Nova had just done was the first step toward that kind of greatness, it sent a thrill through her veins.
“Only a handful of people alive today have ever accomplished it,” Isabella went on. “The dean of the Elemental Academy, myself, and twelve of the academy’s mentors. That’s all.”
Nova stared at her in awe. She had always known Isabella was powerful, but this put everything in a new light. She wasn’t just a teacher or a mentor. She was one of the few people in the entire world capable of wielding complete elemental balance.
“I never thought…” Nova began, but her voice faded.
She looked down at her hands once more. For so long they had seemed weak to her. But now, she saw something else. Possibility. Strength. A beginning.
Isabella watched her closely, noting the light in her eyes, the shift in her posture. Nova was no longer overwhelmed. She was awakened.
Then Nova looked up, her expression fierce and full of resolve. “I won’t be satisfied with just fire and wood. I want to learn them all. I want to awaken and fuse every element. If it’s possible, I’ll do it.”
Isabella’s smile widened, full of pride.
“You have the heart of a true elementalist,” she said. “That heart will carry you through the trials to come. It won’t be easy, but you’re already walking a path many never even find.”
Nova took a deep breath. Her fear was still there, but it no longer controlled her. She was beginning to believe that she could shape her future, that she could protect the people she loved. She wasn’t just s
urviving anymore.
She was rising.
