Chapter 48
Nova wiped her tears, still trembling. Her heart was heavy with guilt and fear, but Isabella’s words brought a sliver of clarity. She looked at her hands, then at James, whose chest rose only slightly, each breath weaker than the last.
“I… I was controlled?” she asked in a whisper, her voice filled with disbelief. “And Samuel too?”
Isabella nodded gently. “Yes. That’s why your power didn’t respond. Someone interfered with your connection to the element. Samuel’s attack wasn’t of his own will either. But we’ll uncover who’s behind it soon enough.”
Nova clenched her fists, anger and confusion swirling inside her. “Who would do that to us?”
“We’ll find out,” Isabella said calmly, “but right now, James is dying. You have to focus. You must tap into your element and try to heal him.”
“But… I don’t know how,” Nova said, her voice trembling again.
“You won’t know until you try. Close your eyes. Feel the fire not just as a weapon, but as life. Fire creates, not only destroys. Let it flow into James. Let it give him warmth, breath… and a chance.”
Nova looked down at James again, then slowly nodded. She placed her hands over his wound, shut her eyes, and took a deep breath.
Isabella turned toward Oliver, her voice calm and steady. “Don’t give up so easily. You’re closer to awakening the wood element than you realize.”

Oliver looked down at James, whose breathing had become faint and uneven. The sight made his chest tighten. “I’ve tried,” he said, his voice low. “I don’t feel anything. No energy, no warmth, no connection to the element at all.”
Nova looked at him with tearful eyes, her hands still pressed to James’ wound. “Please... just try again. For James’ sake.”
The air around them felt still, as if the canyon itself was holding its breath. No one spoke for a moment. Even the soft rustling of wind through the rocks had faded.
Oliver gave a slow nod. He moved beside Nova, gently placing one hand over James’ heart and closing his eyes. He tried to shut out the noise in his mind, the fear, the doubt. He recalled what the elders of the Elf Kingdom used to say about the wood element—how it thrived not in force, but in harmony, in the flow of life that connected all living things.
He inhaled deeply, trying to feel that rhythm, the quiet beat of life. Still, there was nothing. No stirring energy. No light. Just silence.

“I can’t,” he whispered, pulling back slightly, his voice filled with frustration. His shoulders slumped as the weight of failure sank in.

“You can,” Isabella said again. Her tone was patient, but firm. “The wood element responds to your intention, not your strength. You have to stop trying to control it like a weapon. Let it answer your desire to heal.”

Oliver stared down at James, at the blood seeping through his torn clothes, and felt a surge of helplessness. Then he looked at Nova, who had gone quiet, her head bowed beside James. He thought of all they had faced, the bonds they had formed, the countless dangers they had overcome together. He thought of the future... of what they would lose if James died here.

He clenched his jaw and steadied his breathing. This time, he placed both hands on James’ chest, letting go of his fear. He focused on his purpose. Not on success. Not on awakening. Just on the will to heal.

He let that feeling rise inside him.

But Isabella still insisted, her voice sharper this time. “James is slipping away. If you don’t do this now, we’ll lose him. You must awaken the wood element. You and Nova together, only then can we save him.”

Oliver’s eyes widened. “Together?” he asked, glancing at Nova, who looked back with confusion and fear.

“Yes,” Isabella said. “Her fire, your wood. Life needs both warmth and growth. You must work together.”

Oliver swallowed hard. He knelt again beside James, his hands trembling as he placed them back on the wound. “Please,” he whispered, not sure if he was speaking to the element, to himself, or to some unseen force beyond them all.

He shut his eyes, heart racing, and poured everything he had into the effort. Every memory. Every emotion. Every shred of desperation.

Nova hesitated, then reached out, her palm glowing faintly with flickers of fire. She pressed it over Oliver’s.

At that moment, something shifted.

A sudden warmth surged up Oliver’s arms, spreading through his chest. His breath caught in his throat. It wasn’t fire... it was something else. Something older, deeper. A pulse, like a heartbeat under the earth. Green light burst from his hands, curling like vines around James’ wound.

Oliver gasped and opened his eyes, staring at the glowing energy as it flowed from him. “I did it,” he breathed. “I… I really did it!” He looked up at Isabella, eyes wide with disbelief. “It’s happening!”

Isabella then turned to Nova, her tone gentle but urgent. “Now it’s your turn. You must guide the fire element again. Don’t think about the fear or the failure from earlier. Just feel it. Call it like you always have.”

Nova wiped her tears, nodding slowly. Her hands trembled as she raised them again, reaching deep within herself. A faint warmth flickered at her fingertips, the early spark of fire answering her call.

“Good,” Isabella said. “Now listen carefully. Don’t force it. Let it flow. Feel Oliver’s energy beside yours. Your fire, his wood. Let them meet.”

Nova hesitated. “But they’re different… Won’t they clash?”

“No,” Isabella said. “When balanced, they complement. Fire warms. Wood grows. Together, they create life. Now fuse them.”

Nova shut her eyes again and focused. Slowly, her flame extended toward the green energy still pouring from Oliver’s hands. For a moment, the two elements seemed to swirl against each other. Red against green, heat against growth but as Nova steadied her breath and reached further, the lights began to merge.

A soft glow formed where their hands met. It wasn’t red. It wasn’t green. It was something new. A pale golden light, clear and steady. Pure elemental power, free of any single attribute.

Isabella watched closely, a hint of awe in her eyes. “That’s it. You’ve done it.”

Nova couldn’t believe it. She had thought it impossible to succeed so quickly, especially after her earlier failures. Yet, here she was, on her second attempt, the green wood element from Oliver and her own red fire element had merged seamlessly, turning into a clear, transparent light.

Isabella’s voice was calm but firm. “Now, Nova, guide that pure elemental power straight to James’ wound. Focus on healing.”

Nova nodded, concentrating hard. She reached out, letting the glowing energy flow from her hands like a gentle stream. The light moved steadily toward James’ chest, wrapping around the deep gash.

Slowly, the wound began to close, the torn flesh knitting itself back together. The blood stopped flowing, the color returning to James’ pale skin. As the last spark of the elemental light faded, James’ eyelids fluttered open.

He gasped softly, his eyes meeting Nova’s. The camp was silent, filled
with relief and quiet awe at the healing they had just witnessed.
