CHAPTER 261: WHISPERS ON THE STREETS

CHAPTER 261: WHISPERS ON THE STREETS
The rain had stopped by midnight, leaving the neon lights of the lower grid bleeding into the dark, slick asphalt.

Giovanni stood at the head of the heavy steel conference table beneath the Ombra safe house. The air inside the room was thick with cigarette smoke and heavy, restless tension.

Tank sat near the center, his massive arms folded across his chest like iron bars. Beside him, Chiara turned a heavy brass lighter over and over in her hands, the metallic click echoing against the concrete walls. Across the table, Viktor paced back and forth, his dark coat damp from the rain outside.

Nyra sat in the corner, her sharp eyes fixed on the empty seat beside Giovanni.

"Alexandro still isn't showing his face?" Viktor asked, stopping his pacing to throw his hands up in frustration. "The streets are burning out there, Ghost! We have entire crews abandoned on the north docks, and our Don is still locked inside his penthouse!"

"Alexandro is handling a critical personal matter," Giovanni replied, his voice a low, steady rumble that commanded instant authority. "I am speaking for Ombra tonight. If you have an issue with that, Viktor, you can take it up with him when he steps back into the room."

Viktor grumbled under his breath, shaking his head, but he sat down.

"What's the update on Enzo's vanguard?" Giovanni asked, turning his attention to Tank.

Tank leaned forward, resting his thick forearms on the wood. "Complete chaos. Vane vanished three hours ago."

The room went stone-cold silent.

Chiara stopped flipping her brass lighter, her eyes narrowing sharply. "Vane? He was Enzo's main underboss. He was running their whole eastern supply line."

"His car was found burned out near the industrial canal," Tank explained, his voice grim. "No body, but blood on the driver's seat. The word spreading through the lower ranks is that it wasn't an Ombra hit. It was Enzo's private clean-up crew."

Nyra let out a short, cold laugh, shaking her head. "Enzo is eating his own tail. Vane started asking too many questions about the villa explosion, so Enzo put a bullet in his head to keep him quiet."

"And the street soldiers know it," Viktor added, his tone shifting from anger to dark calculation. "The foot soldiers aren't stupid. They see their bosses dying off one by one. First Vittori, then Greco, now Vane. They realize Enzo is using them as human shields while he hides in luxury."

"They're terrified," Tank said, looking up at Giovanni. "Three of Enzo's main harbor captains reached out to my men twenty minutes ago. They want protection. They're ready to hand over their weapons, their turf keys, and their supply routes. They want to defect to Ombra en masse."

Chiara leaned back in her chair, a slow smirk spreading across her lips. "If we absorb those three captains, Enzo loses seventy percent of his remaining street power overnight. He won't have a vanguard left to command."

"We take them in," Giovanni ordered flatly, leaving no room for debate. "Screen every soldier, strip their unregistered weapons, and integrate them into our secondary perimeters. But keep them isolated until we confirm their loyalty."

"What about Enzo?" Nyra asked, her sharp gaze locking onto Giovanni. "We strip his men, but the snake is still breathing. Where is he hiding?"

Giovanni’s jaw set, his dark eyes hardening into pitch-black stone.

"He's buried deep," Giovanni admitted, leaning over the table. "The Council provided him with an underground bunker in the old banking district. The place is fortified like a military vault—reinforced steel doors, independent air scrubbers, and private security detail."

"So we blow the doors down," Viktor said, his hand dropping to the holster at his hip. "We bring heavy ordnance and level the block."

"We can't just blow the doors," Giovanni countered sharply. "The Council is backing him through encrypted satellite accounts. They're feeding him untraceable funds and real-time surveillance of our patrol routes. If we roll up with heavy weapons without cutting his lifeline, the Council will air-evacuate him before we even breach the first perimeter."

"Then how do we pin him down?" Tank asked, leaning in.

Giovanni ran a heavy hand over his jaw, his mind racing through the tactical blueprint. He knew street warfare. He knew how to break a line, how to clear an alley, and how to put a bullet through an enemy's heart. But satellite lines and encrypted Council banking servers were a completely different battleground.

He needed someone who could move through digital shadows with the same lethal precision that Bella used with a blade.

A sudden image flashed in his mind.

He thought of the glowing laptop screen on his kitchen island, the scrolling strings of complex diagnostic code, and the wild, dark curls scattered across his table late at night.

Maria.

Giovanni stiffened, a suffocating knot tightening low in his chest as he remembered the cold, sharp fury in her eyes when she had slammed her bedroom door in his face earlier that evening.

"We need a master hacker," Giovanni said quietly, his voice dropping into a raspy register. "Someone who can breach high-grade Council satellite encryption and cut his digital signal before we hit the ground."

Chiara raised an eyebrow, a skeptical look on her face. "Do we even have someone like that in Citernera? The Council’s tech grid is locked tighter than a bank vault."

Giovanni stood up from the table, pulling his leather vest back over his shoulders.

"I know someone," Giovanni muttered, his tone unreadable as he turned toward the heavy steel door. "Hold the street positions. I'll get the coordinates."

He stepped out of the conference room and headed back up toward the alley, the cold rain air hitting his face as he prepped himself for the conversation waiting for him at home.
