CHAPTER 260: ONE DAY AT A TIME
CHAPTER 260: ONE DAY AT A TIME
The silence in the master suite was suffocating.
Scattered shards of glass from the shattered cup were still missing from the corner near the wardrobe, though a maid had swept away the main debris hours ago. The sharp scent of spilled chamomile tea still lingered in the air, mixing with the cool afternoon draft coming through the terrace doors.
Bella sat propped up against the pillows, her hands resting flat against her lifeless thighs.
She stared at her fingers. They moved when her brain told them to move. She could curl them into fists. She could dig her nails into her palms until the skin nearly tore. But everything below her waist remained a dead, unyielding void.
She had driven Maria away. She had screamed at the only sister she had left until the girl ran out of the penthouse in tears.
A quiet click broke the stillness.
Alexandro pushed open the heavy double doors, stepping into the room. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket or his tie. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He carried no food trays, no medical charts, and no gentle apologies.
He walked straight over to the bed, his dark eyes fixed on her pale, rigid face.
"Get up," Alexandro said softly.
Bella didn't look up. "I can't get up, Alex. Or did your brilliant doctors forget to remind you?"
"I didn't ask if you could walk," Alexandro replied, his voice a low, steady rumble. "I said sit up."
Before she could spit another venomous insult, Alexandro leaned over the mattress. He slid his broad arms beneath her back and knees, lifting her body effortlessly into a sitting position at the edge of the bed.
"Don't touch me!" Bella hissed, her hands flying up to push against his chest. "I told you to leave me alone!"
"And I told you I am never leaving," Alexandro murmured against her temple.
He didn't pull back. Instead, he climbed onto the mattress behind her, pulling her back against his broad chest. He wrapped his heavy arms around her waist, anchoring her frame securely between his legs so she wouldn't collapse sideways.
Bella went rigid in his grip. She felt the heat of his body soaking through her shirt, felt the solid, rhythmic thud of his heart pounding against her shoulder blade.
"What are you doing?" she rasped, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and sheer humiliation. "What is this?"
"This is us starting," Alexandro said into her hair.
He reached down, his long, warm hands sliding down her motionless legs until his palms rested over her knees.
"You pushed Maria away because she looked at you," Alexandro said quietly, his grip firm on her right knee. "You screamed at her because you are terrified that if people see you like this, you won't be the Siren anymore. You think if you aren't a weapon, you are nothing."
"Shut up," Bella choked out, her jaw tightening so hard her teeth ached. "You don't know anything about me."
"I know you," Alexandro growled softly, his thumb pressing into the side of her knee. "I know you're hiding behind your anger because it's easier to be furious than it is to be scared. But pushing the people who love you out of this room isn't going to fix your spine, Bella. It's just going to leave you alone in the dark."
Bella’s breath caught in her throat. The sharp truth of his words sliced through her chest like a razor blade.
Alexandro didn't wait for her to process it. He slowly lifted her right leg, manually bending her knee upward toward her chest, then extending it back out. He moved her limb with slow, rhythmic precision, carrying out the passive range-of-motion exercises the specialists had prescribed.
"Alex..." she whispered, her voice fracturing.
"I've got you," he replied, his heart beating steady and strong against her back. "Again."
He lifted her left leg, bending the knee, flexing the ankle, and lowering it back to the mattress.
Bella looked down at her own legs. She watched them move under the guidance of his large, calloused hands. She felt his muscles straining behind her to keep her upright, felt his breath warm against her neck, but she felt absolutely nothing in her lower limbs. The disconnect was terrifying. It was a phantom existence, a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.
"It's dead, Alex," she sobbed suddenly, her stoic facade finally crumbling into dust.
Tears spilled over her lashes, hot and heavy, washing down her pale cheeks. She didn't have the energy to fight him anymore. She didn't have the strength to hurl glass or scream insults.
"It's completely dead," she wept, her small hands reaching down to clutch at his forearms where they rested on her waist. "I can't feel it. I try so hard... I scream at my brain to move a toe, to flex a muscle, and nothing happens! Nothing!"
Alexandro tightened his grip around her waist, pulling her closer against his chest, letting her weep into the quiet room.
"I'm an assassin, Alex," she choked out, her voice breaking into ragged, gasping sobs that shook her entire frame. "I don't know how to be a normal woman. I don't know how to exist if I can't fight, if I can't run, if I can't protect myself! My father built me to be a blade. What good is a broken blade?!"
She turned her face into the crook of his neck, her fingers digging desperately into his shirt sleeves, clinging to him like a lifeline in a storm.
"I'm scared," Bella confessed for the first time in her life, the words ripped from the darkest corner of her soul. "Alex... I am so fucking terrified of being helpless."
Alexandro closed his eyes, his dark lashes wet with unshed tears as he buried his face in her dark hair. He rocked her gently, his massive arms shielding her from the cold room, holding her as if he could absorb her terror into his own skin.
"You are not helpless," Alexandro swore against her ear, his voice rich, thick, and burning with unshakeable conviction. "And you are not a broken blade. You are the woman who survived Citernera. You are the woman who survived Enzo. You are the strongest person I have ever known."
He lifted his hand, his thumb gently catching her chin, tilting her face up until her tear-stained, dark eyes were forced to meet his dark, possessive gaze.
"If your legs don't move today, we try tomorrow," Alexandro whispered, leaving zero room for doubt. "If they don't move next week, we try next month. And if they never move again, then I will be your legs for the rest of our lives. But you are never going to fight this alone again, Bella. We fight through this together."
Bella stared up at him, her chest heaving, her lips trembling as his words settled into her heart.
For years, she had fought every battle in isolation. She had bled alone, suffered alone, and hidden her pain behind sharp masks and cold steel. But looking into Alexandro's fierce, unwavering eyes, feeling the powerful thud of his heart against her shoulder, she knew he meant every word. He wasn't giving up on her. He was never going to walk away.
A long, shuddering sigh escaped her lips.
She relaxed her heavy frame against his chest, letting her head rest beneath his jaw. She didn't push him away. She didn't scream. She simply allowed herself to be held, placing her trust in the hands of the man who refused to let her fall into the dark.
"Again," Bella whispered softly after a long silence, her voice still rough from crying.
Alexandro offered a small, quiet smile in the dimming light of the room.
"Again," he agreed softly.
He reached down, his broad hands sliding back over her knees, and together in the quiet penthouse, they began the slow, painful work of bringing her back to life.
