CHAPTER 262: THE DIGITAL BRIDGE

CHAPTER 262: THE DIGITAL BRIDGE

The sharp, rhythmic clicking of mechanical keys was the only sound echoing through the wide living room.

The apartment was cold, dark, and filled with the low hum of cooling fans.

Maria sat at the kitchen island, her thick-rimmed glasses pushed up on her nose, her dark eyes bloodshot as she stared at the scrolling diagnostic code on her laptop screen.

Line after line of automated scripts ran in real time, trying to breach the encrypted satellite relay feeding funds and intelligence into Enzo’s hidden network.

Her shoulders were pulled tight with exhaustion. Her body still held the lingering, heavy memory of the night before—the warmth of Giovanni’s hands on her skin, his lips against her scars, and the devastating, clinical way he had dismissed it all as a momentary slip-up this evening.

She swallowed down the lump in her throat, forcing her mind back into the cold logic of numbers and firewalls.

A heavy boot scraped against the hardwood floor near the foyer.

Maria didn't look up. Her fingers kept flying across the keyboard with sharp, aggressive precision.

Giovanni walked into the kitchen, carrying the damp night air and engine exhaust on his dark vest. He stopped on the opposite side of the marble island, setting his broad palms flat against the cool stone surface.

The cold, sharp tension from their argument earlier hung in the space between them, thick enough to suffocate the room.

"Anything?" Giovanni asked. His deep voice was a raspy rumble in the quiet apartment.

Maria hit a final command sequence with a loud, resounding click before folding her arms over her chest. She leaned back against her barstool, looking at him through her lenses with a completely detached, professional stare.

"Nothing," Maria said flatly.

Giovanni’s brow pulled into a dark, heavy knot. "What do you mean, nothing? Tank said the terminal signals were bouncing off the old banking district."

"It's a ghost signal, Giovanni," Maria explained, pointing a slender finger toward her monitor, where a series of bright red error windows suddenly flashed across the black background.

"I isolated the IP string, bypassed two regional firewalls, and the moment I tried to trace the main satellite uplink, the entire server scrubbed itself. It didn't just block me. It erased its own access logs in real time."

Giovanni leaned further over the counter, his dark eyes fixed on the flashing red errors. "Is it Enzo's private tech team?"

Maria let out a sharp, humorless laugh, shaking her head.

"Enzo? Enzo uses standard military-grade encryption. This isn't Enzo. This is high-level, military-tier black-budget hardware. Whoever is running these servers has access to private orbital satellites and quantum-level firewalls."

She tapped her fingers against the marble counter, her brow furrowing with technical frustration.

"I've been probing these entry nodes for three hours straight. Every single time I get anywhere near a real physical location, the signal routes through five different international proxy banks and vanishes into thin air."

Giovanni ran a heavy hand over his stubbled jaw, his eyes darkening as a cold, dangerous realization settled over him.

"The Council," Giovanni muttered under his breath.

"Who the fuck are they, Giovanni?" Maria asked, her voice dropping into a guarded, serious register.

"I've hacked into intelligence databases across Europe. I've breached Interpol networks and high-security servers. But these people... there is no digital footprint. No names, no corporations, no paper trail. It's like trying to trace a ghost."

Giovanni stood upright, his chest rising and falling in a deep, heavy breath as he met her sharp gaze.

"They are the old money behind the entire region," Giovanni said quietly, his tone laced with dark gravity. "The shadow syndicate that controls the board members, the high courts, and the international shipping lanes. For years, they stayed in the background, letting men like Enzo and Alexandro fight over the street dirt."

He paced a short step beside the counter, his hand sweeping through the quiet air.

"Now that Enzo is backed into a corner, they are stepping in to protect their investment. They are hiding him behind an impenetrable wall."

Maria looked at her glowing screens, then back up at Giovanni's harsh, weary face.

"If they are protecting him with satellite grid technology," Maria whispered, "you will never find him on the streets. He could be sitting in a bunker five miles away or fifty miles away, and you would never know."

Silence stretched across the dark kitchen.

Giovanni stood on his side of the island, staring down at the marble.

Despite the rigid distance he had tried to put between them after the morning, seeing her sitting under the blue light of the monitor, looking so smart, fierce, and relentless, made a quiet, familiar heat pull low in his chest.

The electric pull between them didn't vanish just because they were throwing cold words at each other.

He took a slow breath, stepping right back up to the edge of the counter, his tone dropping all defensive pretense, leaving only raw, desperate honesty.

"We need to know who we're fighting, Maria," Giovanni said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers.

"As long as the Council protects Enzo, this war never ends. And as long as this war continues, Bella is never safe. She is trapped in that penthouse with a permanent target on her back."

At the mention of Bella’s name, the cold barrier in Maria’s eyes softened slightly. Her jaw set with renewed determination.

"We need to find out who the fuck the Council actually is," Giovanni added, his raspy voice thick with genuine weight. "If we want Bella to be free, we need your help. I need your help, Maria."

Maria stared at him across the marble island for a long, quiet moment.

She saw the heavy weight resting on his broad shoulders. She saw the absolute, unshakeable loyalty he held for Alexandro and Bella. And beneath his detached front, she felt the magnetic, suffocating pull that still burned in the space between them.

She couldn't turn her back on Bella. And deep down, she couldn't turn her back on him.

She pulled her secondary keyboard closer, her fingers hovering over the keys.

"I'll build a custom deep-packet decryption script," Maria stated, her voice turning cold, steady, and resolute. "It's going to take time, and I'll need direct access to the city's main fiber-optic node downtown to bypass the regional satellite blocks."

"I'll get you inside the node," Giovanni promised instantly, zero hesitation in his voice.

"Good," Maria said, her dark eyes flashing as she focused back on the glowing monitors. "Now sit down and let me work."

Giovanni offered a single, quiet nod. He pulled up a wooden stool beside her at the island, settling into the dark room as her fingers began flying across the mechanical keys once more.
