Chapter 103: Work in Progress Part 1
Mirage’s P.O.V
Alex watched Maze bounce out of the room with a smile on his face.
“I’ve never had siblings, but now I miss not having one.” He gave me a sheepish smile. “Maybe we should make sure that our kids don’t feel alone, so we should have many.”
My heart literally threatened to burst out of my chest. “You’re not mad?”
“Mad?” Alex’s smile instantly turned into a glare. “I’m ready to throw you into the dungeons and throw away the keys so you don’t ever think about doing stupid things ever again.”
He closed and locked the door before he came to sit at the foot of the bed, keeping a safe distance from me. I missed his touch…I missed not having him near me; especially when he was purposely shutting off the mating bond from his side. I wasn’t even aware he could do that.
“I…guess we have a lot to talk ab-”
“Let’s start with the fact that you actually tried to ‘drug’ me with a few stupid sleeping herbs from the greenhouse, shall we?” He cut me off, his voice rough. “I don’t know what exactly went through your head, but trying to drug me with sedatives that were too weak for guinea pigs, let alone humans, was one move that led to your doom. I had to pretend to be asleep the whole time you got dressed and then just stood there staring at me before taking off without a word. I was at least expecting a note that poured your heart out? Or perhaps…just an apology?”
I lowered my head, not able to look him in the eyes anymore.
Yes, now that he was saying all this out loud, I did feel incredibly stupid for not having the strength to wait just one more day. If I had waited, then I could have seen Maze arrive with her vampire mate and everything would’ve been so much different…better.
“All my life…it had just been me and my family.” I told Alex in a small voice. “My mom, my dad and my sister. But after we grew up, even my mom and dad had started to feel like my enemy. Even if I told them that I was going to the mall to have lunch with my school or college or even work colleagues…I was instantly warned against them and told not to trust anyone. That’s how I grew up Alex…not being able to trust even my own shadow at night. I didn’t have friends like yours who would fight even Satan to defend you. I didn’t have an Alpha who acted like a father figure to not just his own children, but the entire pack.”
“For me, my parent’s word and the strictness with which I grew up meant everything. Their word was the law and if I didn’t listen…something bad was bound to happen. Maze made a mistake just once…and that led to my mother’s death and my entire family got scattered all over the states and I landed at the hands of a madman.”
I looked up at him then, with tears welling in my eyes, hoping that he would understand my side of the story as well. “I didn’t want you to get involved, Alex. You or your pack. Poor Julian was just passing by on the road and yet, he was poisoned and infected and he had to suffer for days just because he had the bad luck of knowing me…because your pack made the mistake of giving me a home… So I would rather suffer through hell all alone and all over again than let any of you get harmed because of me!”
“And do you know how that makes me feel?” Alex asked me instead, his voice thick with emotion. “It makes me feel like a failure as a mate, because my own mate doesn’t trust me enough to tell me exactly what was bothering her. You suffered in silence, hoping that when you were gone, I’ll happily forget you and move on? Is that what you wished for me? Well, then I have new for you Mirage! A wolf that has already mated turns insane after losing its mate. So if I truly let you go and something ended up happening to you while you tried to get rid of Alistair…then I would have turned rogue permanently and then I would be dead.”
The silence that stretched inside the room was deafening as his words rang inside my head.
He could’ve died? And I’m being told about this only now?
