Chapter 104: Work in Progress Part 2

Chapter 104: Work in Progress Part 2
Mirage’s P.O.V

Why was it that my parents never really told me or Maze about the truth of what happens when a Mated pair dies? Is my father…? No…he’s alive…so that means that it’s only the wolf that gets the raw end of the bargain…

“I…I didn’t know.” I whispered. “I was never told about it.”

“I had a hunch,” Alex sighed. “And I think I know why your parents fought so hard to be together as well…they were mated even before they fully understood the consequences their mating could bring. When you are young and not always aware of the secrets of your race…little mistakes can lead to a lot of dangerous circumstances. That’s why Alpha Charles always makes sure that we are educated about all the secrets and less talked about facts about wolves. Once you are well integrated into the pack…you’ll know about them as well.”

“Alpha Charles…Cameron…Freya and Sarah…?” I asked him. “How mad are they?”

“They’re more worried than mad.” He shook his head, making the dark strands land on his forehead. “We’ve already crossed that huddle, so there’s no need to cry or scream over what could’ve been. From now on, we need to focus on what mistakes to never make again…and I admit, I’m just as much to blame as you are. I knew about your plan…your dream, ever since you had it, but I stayed quiet because I wanted to give you a chance to come clean about it by yourself. But instead of doing that, you decided to take matters into your own hand and ran off.”

“But how is that possible?” I asked him, not being able to believe that he had been aware of my dream ever since I saw it. “How could you have found out without me knowing?”

“All I have is a theory.” He told me. “And it may sound insane but I think your Fae side…it had formed a connection with me ever since you fell into Alistair’s clutches. Freya told me that Fae reach out to their mates ever since they are born, but since we were still states apart at that time, and not to mention your seal hiding your true self, your Fae side didn’t reach out for me until it sensed danger…and that’s why, it’s been adversely affecting my wolf all this time, causing it to almost become rogue.”

“Does that mean…you’re better now? Is that why they took off the tracker?”

“Yes,” he nodded. “Ever since you transformed into a wolf, my wolf has calmed down completely. In fact, I had never felt it be this peaceful before and that means that you feel better.”

“I do,” I told him hurriedly. “I found my sister; I’ll be reunited with my father soon; I can transform into a wolf now and we finally have our mating bond! There is nothing more that I could have ever asked for…except for your forgiveness and the rest of the team. You are right…I was reckless and stupid and hardheaded…I should’ve trusted you with the dream…I should’ve discussed it with everyone before taking such a big step.”

“Yes, you’re right. You are hardheaded and stubborn and reckless…” he reached out to take my hand in his. “But so am I. When I saw you leave, I didn’t wait to tell anyone either. I just got up and followed you to wherever Alistair took you, until I was foolish enough to be caught. It was a good thing that I was wearing that tracker, otherwise, the team would have never been able to find us in time.”

“I guess we’re both…work in progress then,” I shrugged, looking up into his green eyes. “We’re messy and completed and we still have so much to work on…but no matter what, I would still choose to be with you, mating bond or not.”

“Same here.” Finally, Alex’s lips tilted up into a small smile. “I like that notion, ‘work in progress’…I think it defines us well.”

“Then…do we have a truce?” I asked hopefully. Because I knew just how badly I screwed up…I wasn’t going to ask for forgiveness just yet. It was going to happen gradually and I was okay with it, no matter how long it took.

“Truce,” he nodded with a smile.

And then, finally, Alex put his hand on my nape and pulled me in for a kiss that took my breath away…and brought me home.
