Chapter 74: Connected Souls

Chapter 74: Connected Souls
Aslan stayed by Cosette’s side, holding her hand. Yuan and his grandfather left the room. On their grandfather's face was a look of letting go. But at the same time, Yuan had never seen his face so peaceful. It seemed that by accepting Aslan, he also released the anger that had built up in his heart for so long.

"I just wanted to protect her," he said as they stood in the hallway. "I couldn't do that for her father. So when I found out my granddaughter was alive, I wanted to bring her back here. This is her home."

"There is already someone who can protect her more than we can," said Yuan. "She is Aslan’s mate, the mother of the alpha's child. We can't take that away from her."

"Do they love each other so much that they would sacrifice their own safety? I thought Cosette was just being used for revenge. You know the trouble between our families. But when I saw their sacrifice, I was afraid that I might be the obstacle to their happiness. That I was the one using my own granddaughter to get revenge."

This was the first time their grandfather had been so open about his thoughts.

"Cosette is a strong girl," said Yuan. "She has her own views and decisions. Their kind has taken a lot from us, but not all of them should be treated as enemies, especially now that they are going to have the alpha's child."

His grandfather sighed, as if he was very tired.

"Just call me when there is a change in her condition."

He turned and left with two guards. But before leaving the hospital completely, he had one last thing to say.

"Feed the alpha and treat his wounds. I don't want my granddaughter to find her future husband injured."

Yuan bowed to his grandfather and said goodbye. A smile could be seen on his lips.

"Thank you, Grandfather."

Yuan went back to Cosette’s room. Aslan was still there, watching over her. He had his eyes closed while holding Cosette’s hand. Yuan wondered if he was conscious, because he hadn't moved from his position for a while. Yuan approached and tapped Aslan. He stepped back when Aslan suddenly fell from the chair.

"Aslan!"

He didn't answer. He was unconscious. Yuan cursed. He was about to leave the room to call a doctor when he noticed the line on the monitor connected to Cosette. It started making noise. What was happening?

Yuan ran to the hallway and called the doctors. A doctor and some nurses rushed into the room. They immediately attended to Aslan. Others took care of Cosette. Yuan stared and didn't know what to do. It seemed like the lives of the two were connected, Aslan and Cosette. No. The problem was about to end. They couldn't give up now.

Aslan was taken to the emergency room. The beating and blinking on Cosette’s monitor continued. The green wave was slowly wavering. Yuan rubbed his hands over his face.

"Sorry, sir, but you need to leave."

Yuan couldn't do anything but leave Cosette. He paced around the hallway, waiting. A guard approached him.

"Sir, we have visitors from Elwood."

Yuan looked at who the guard was talking about. From the door at the end of the hallway stood Miss Farrah and Kieran.

"Should I let them in?"

"Yes. Let them in."

The guard bowed and left. He approached the two standing in front of the door. They talked. After a while, Miss Farrah and Kieran were walking towards Yuan. Yuan noticed the worried face of Aslan’s sister. Her eyes were red and she seemed to have had no rest, just like them.

She slightly bowed when they faced each other. Yuan also bowed in greeting.

"I'm Farrah Crimson, Aslan’s sister. I just want to know if he's here." Her voice cracked. "We've been searching for several days."

"He is here," Yuan said.

"Where is he?" Kieran asked.

Before Yuan could answer, Miss Farrah spoke. "He's been deeply injured. He was hit by a bullet in the middle of the fight before Cosette arrived. Aslan escaped from the hospital before he could be treated."

Yuan stopped. Aslan had been shot? But he was able to wait for almost three days in the rain. So, all that time, he had a serious injury.

"Where is my brother?"

"He's in the emergency room right now after losing consciousness earlier."

Pain flooded Miss Farrah. "How about Cosette? How is she?"

"They are both in critical condition."

Miss Farrah almost collapsed from weakness.

"This can't... this can't be..."

Yuan accompanied Miss Farrah to Aslan. One of the doctors said that he needed to be operated on because of the bullet in his body. He had lost a lot of blood and his body was very weak.

Miss Farrah sat down on one of the chairs in the hallway.

"I told him not to go. He needed to heal first, to get stronger. But he kept saying that Cosette needed him."

"She did," said Yuan. "If he wasn't here at that time, if he didn't insist on coming in, Cosette might have been in danger. But at that time, no one knew he had a serious injury."

"Each other's condition will affect their own," said Miss Farrah. "The pain they are feeling right now is doubled because they share each other's pain."

"What can we do?" Yuan asked.

"Let's hope both of them will survive this," said Kieran, who had been silent for a while. "Because one of them might let go so that the other can survive."
