Chapter 73: Grandfather’s Choice
Chapter 73: Grandfather’s Choice
Night came. It became quiet in the hospital. The wounded members of the clan had been treated. The clan was swept by an eerie silence.
As time passed, Yuan became more worried about Cosette’s condition. He watched over her all night. He didn't realize he had fallen asleep.
He woke up because of the commotion in the hallway. He got up from the sofa and went out of the room. He saw the guards running around. He asked one of them.
"The Elwood alpha is outside and wants to come in."
Yuan stopped at what he heard. He went outside to see what was happening. He saw Aslan Crimson being stopped from entering by the guards and some hospital staff. His condition hadn't changed. It seemed like he hadn't rested or had his wounds treated.
Aslan was trying to get closer to the hospital where Cosette was confined, but the hospital strictly followed the clan leader's orders. No one was allowed to visit.
Yuan’s grandfather arrived at the hospital. He saw the commotion outside. He continued to enter without facing the alpha. When he passed by Yuan, he said, "Don't let him in."
Yuan took a deep breath. How long would he remain stubborn like this?
Yuan approached the commotion. Aslan struggled in the hands of those holding him. His jaw was clenched, but you could see the pleading in his eyes.
"Where is she? How are they?"
Yuan stopped. So he knew.
"Cosette is in a coma. The child's condition is critical."
The alpha stared at him. Yuan saw the pain in his eyes.
"I need to see them. Let me see her."
"It's better if you go back to your town first."
"I need to see them!"
Yuan could almost see the pleading in the alpha's eyes, but another clash between the clans wouldn't help the situation, especially now that they're both in a vulnerable position.
Yuan turned away. "I can't do what you're asking."
He started walking back inside the hospital. He heard Aslan struggling. You can never put out fire with fire. Both sides need to realize this.

Cosette remained unconscious. Her face was peaceful as she lay in bed. Yuan had never seen this kind of calm from her before. In the past months, Cosette had lived in confusion, fear, and worry.
Can you sleep soundly now? He wanted to ask his cousin. Is that why you're not waking up, because you prefer the peace there?
Yuan went home briefly that afternoon to get some things. When he came out of the hospital, Aslan was still waiting outside. Two staff members from the mansion were guarding him to make sure he couldn't get in.
Yuan didn't know what he was thinking. The sun was setting. He had been standing there all day.
It was night when Yuan returned. Aslan was still standing in front of the hospital and didn't seem to have any intention of leaving or even moving. When he mentioned this to his grandfather, he didn't say anything.
Yuan slept at the hospital like the previous nights. His grandfather went home to the mansion again. He would only go to ask the doctor about her condition. He seemed to avoid looking at Cosette.
He expected the alpha to be gone the next day, but one of the guards said that he hadn't slept and had remained standing outside.
Yuan sighed. "Keep watching him, but don't hurt him."
The sky was cloudy that morning. In the afternoon, it rained heavily. Yuan stayed in Cosette’s room. He read a book to pass the time. The sound of the machines in the room and the pouring rain were the only noises that could be heard in the room.
Yuan stopped reading when someone knocked on the door. The guard he had assigned to Aslan came in.
"Did he leave?"
He shook his head, causing Yuan to stop.
"He's still outside at this time."
Yuan closed the book and stood up. He went to the window. Dark sky. As night fell, the rain became heavier.
"I think he's getting weak," the guard said. "His wounds are still fresh and he hasn't eaten. He might give up at any moment."
Yuan watched the man waiting in the rain. He didn't expect to see one thing. He was kneeling on the ground. The alpha who bows for no one was on his knees begging to see a glimpse of Cosette.
The door of the room opened. Yuan turned around. His grandfather came in. He wanted to tell him about this, but it seemed like he already knew.
The leader went straight to Cosette. He quietly watched her. No one knew what was running through his mind.
The night passed quietly. The rain continued to pour outside. Aslan remained kneeling in the rain. Cosette remained unconscious. Their grandfather stayed at the hospital that night. When Yuan mentioned Aslan, he only heard a few words in response.
"He'll give up eventually."
But when morning came, he was still kneeling in the rain. People and hospital employees were looking at him. The guards watching him took turns, but he remained in his position. Head down. Not giving up.
It had been three days since the incident. Cosette’s condition hadn't changed. The doctors were worried. If this continued, the child in her womb would be in danger.
That afternoon, Yuan was quietly dozing in the room when he heard a noise. It was the continuous beep of the apparatus connected to Cosette’s body. Yuan suddenly woke up and saw the straight line on the monitor. He ran to the door and called the doctor.
There was commotion in the hallway. The doctors rushed to Cosette’s room. Yuan lost strength, especially when he saw them trying to save Cosette. He cursed and rubbed his hands over his face.
In the middle of the commotion, a new commotion formed at the hospital door. Someone was trying to get in. Aslan.
"Cosette..."
The guards tried to stop him. Aslan struggled. The apparatus continued to sound. It seemed like they were fighting in different situations at the same time. The voltage of the electricity was increased to bring Cosette’s heart back to beating. The doctors were losing hope. You could see on their faces that the situation might not end well.
Aslan broke free from the two guards' grasp.
He got inside. He immediately went to Cosette’s room. The doctors stopped.
"Get him out of here!"
Yuan and others tried to stop Aslan. He was almost in front of the open door of the room. Aslan stopped when he saw Cosette. His dark expression softened.
"Cosette..."
A sound caught everyone's attention. The cocking of a gun. One of the guards pointed the gun at Aslan according to the clan leader's orders.
"Take him out. He'll make my granddaughter's condition worse."
Aslan didn't move. It seemed like he had no intention of fighting. He kept staring at Cosette.
"Just for a moment... I just want to see her..."
The guards, as if they hadn't heard his plea, removed him. After a while, something strange caught everyone's attention.
"The patient responded."
The steady line was slowly developing small waves. The head doctor turned to Aslan.
"Let him in."
Cosette’s grandfather was about to speak when the doctor continued.
"I don't know what's happening, but the patient responded to his arrival. Your granddaughter is on the verge of death. If you want her to live, you'll let the alpha get close to her."
At this moment, Yuan didn't want to interfere. A big decision had to be made by the clan leader, and he wanted to hear those words come directly from his grandfather.
The lost expression in his Grandfather's wary eyes faded. He turned to Cosette and made a decision.
"I approve.”
