Chapter 75: Sacrificial Trade
Chapter 75: Sacrificial Trade
Yuan turned to Miss Farrah to confirm Kieran’s statement, but Miss Farrah could only nod. This was the effect of the bond. They could save each other because of it, but at the time when they were both on the verge of death, it could also destroy them both.
Miss Farrah, Yuan, and Kieran waited. Still no doctor came out of either of the doors to confirm the condition of Aslan and Cosette. As time passed, a doctor approached them.
"We thought her condition was slowly improving, but it seems like her and the child's critical condition has returned," he said, referring to Cosette. "We can't do anything but wait."
Miss Farrah felt weak at what she heard. "How about Aslan?"
The doctor turned to Miss Farrah. Kieran clenched his fist when he saw the expression on the doctor's face, worry.
"The alpha is in a more serious condition. We have removed the bullet, but the wounds that haven't been treated for several days are slowly destroying his body."
And Cosette also feels it. Once Aslan recognize the pain, Cosette has the tendency to suffer, too. That is the power and downside of having a bond. At this moment, both of them are fighting to live. But if both pain is too much to bare, who would hold on and who would let go?
Again, they waited. Miss Farrah and Kieran excused themselves, saying they needed to talk. They left the hospital. People looked at them, but unlike before, they weren't stopped or told to leave. Miss Farrah went outside to calm her mind for a while. Miss Farrah sat on one of the benches in the hospital garden. She was looking at the woods not far from the hospital.
"We received a letter yesterday," Kieran said. "I think you need to know about it too."
Miss Farrah turned to Kieran. "What is it?"
"It's from the council. They want to know why Aslan left Arendell without saying goodbye. Their discussion about the territory of Elwood hasn't been completely finished yet."
Miss Farrah became silent.
"If the council finds out about the situation, they will put even more pressure on Elwood."
Miss Farrah looked back at the woods. “Cosette’s child could save Elwood, but not until Cosette and Aslan survived."
"They will," Kieran said. "I have witnessed what they have gone through. This is just a small test for them both. They need to fight together."
But even Kieran was worried about how things were going. He had witnessed what the two had gone through, and he knew what they were capable of doing to make sure each other was safe. Cosette can't take as much pain as Aslan can. She's a human. This was one of the reasons why most of them weren't in favor of their relationship before. It will be too much pain for her.
A noise interrupted the two's conversation. They heard some nurses running inside the hospital.
"What's happening?"
Miss Farrah and Kieran went back inside. They found some nurses rushing to Aslan’s room.
"The patient isn't responding," they heard one of the doctors say.
Miss Farrah hurried to go to Aslan, but she stopped when she passed by Cosette’s room.
"She's responding," said the nurse. "The patient will wake up any moment now."
Miss Farrah stopped at what she was witnessing. She shivered when something came to her mind. Could it be... Aslan... Was he letting go for Cosette?
Miss Farrah remained standing in the middle of the hallway. While people were making a commotion around her, she only had one thing in her mind. She was in the middle of the hallway, in front of Cosette’s room and a few feet from Aslan’s. And from where she was standing, she could clearly hear everything.
While her brother was slowly letting go, Cosette was slowly being given life. Because if the two were facing the same death, one's letting go was life for the other.
"He's not responding."
"Her heartbeat is stable."
"His breathing stopped."
"She's awake."
Miss Farrah turned to the room where Cosette was. From the glass window, she saw Cosette’s face. Her eyes slowly opened. Another noise was heard in the hallway.
"We're losing the patient on ER."
