77 - The Calm Before the Storm

77 - The Calm Before the Storm
Aria POV

The day felt endless.

She moved through the pack house with purpose, checking on the healers and ensuring everything was ready for the battle. Nervous energy vibrated through the walls; every wolf felt the weight of what was to come. Kael and Elias flitted in and out, finalizing plans. The air was thick with anticipation.

She couldn’t focus—her mind kept drifting to Kael. He was out there, preparing his soldiers. The mission was dangerous, but necessary. The rogues had grown reckless, and they had to be stopped. She knew her role was to heal, not fight. Still, she hated feeling helpless. She would do what she could to save lives, but fear gnawed at her heart every time she thought about what might happen.

“Aria, we’re ready,” a young healer said softly, her voice calm but tremulous. “We’ve packed everything. Are you sure you don’t want to rest? We still have a few hours before dinner.”

Aria forced a smile. “No rest for the wicked,” she whispered. “I’ll join the others at dinner.”

She nodded to the healer and left the room. As she stepped into the hallway, she heard voices from the dining hall. She knew it would be a brief moment of peace before chaos.

Her eyes locked onto him immediately.

Kael sat at the head of the long table, commanding yet somehow softer when he looked at her. Even now, he exuded strength that grounded her.

Her heart fluttered. The tension of the day eased as she moved toward him, settling into the seat beside him. His hand brushed her knee, a subtle, firm touch that sent a shiver through her.

His presence was steady and reassuring.

Suddenly, he leaned close, lips brushing her ear. The casual intimacy made her heart race. She could feel the heat of his body, his solid strength radiating through the air. The others talked, but it felt like just the two of them.

“You look beautiful,” he murmured, low, with a teasing undertone.

His hand moved from her knee to her thigh beneath the table, firm but gentle. Every touch sparked a fire deep within her. She was his, and he was hers.
She turned to meet his eyes, smiling softly, though her chest ached with tension. “I’ve been thinking,” she whispered. “Tomorrow’s going to be hard—for everyone.”

Kael’s lips quirked into a smile. His thumb traced small circles on her thigh. “You’re not the only one,” he murmured. “But we’ll face it together, as we always do.”

Her heart swelled. But doubt crept in—what if she wasn’t enough? What if something happened?

Kael’s fingers brushed her side, then leaned in closer, lips near her ear. “You are more than enough, Aria. Don’t doubt that. You’ve proven yourself a thousand times over.”

Her breath caught. She wanted to respond, but the chatter at the table faded as Kael rose, raising his glass.

“To our pack,” he said, voice steady but soft underneath. “We are stronger together. Tomorrow, we fight for our future. When it’s over, we will emerge victorious.”

The hall erupted in cheers. Kael sat back down and slid his arm around her waist, pulling her close.

“Ready to retire for the night?” he asked softly.

warmth washed over her—not from the hearth, but from him. “I think I could use some rest,” she said, voice soft but heavy with everything they felt.

Kael’s lips curled into a half-smile. With a swift move, he swept her into his arms, lifting her effortlessly as the celebration continued around them. The world blurred into the background.

Reaching their room, Kael pushed open the door with his foot, lips brushing her forehead. He set her down gently on the bed.

Then, he leaned down, capturing her mouth in a fierce, possessive kiss. His hand slid down her side, fingers curling around her waist, pulling her closer until their bodies pressed together. The heat ignited instantly.

Her breath caught, her body responding instinctively. Her hands found his shoulders, then slid into his hair, holding him close as their lips moved in a fiery dance. His tongue demanded entrance, tasting her with a hunger that left no doubt.

His hand slipped beneath her tunic, exploring her bare skin, firm and sure. Her body shivered, flushing with heat. She pressed against him, feeling the undeniable hardness of his arousal through his trousers.

“Goddess, you’re gorgeous,” Kael growled softly, voice thick with need. He nipped her collarbone before trailing kisses down her shoulder. His hand moved to unfasten her tunic, revealing more skin.

Aria’s hands clutch his shoulders, trembling with anticipation. “Kael,” she whispered, voice trembling. “Don’t stop.”

He slid his hand up her back, pulling her closer, kissing her more urgently now. His lips left a trail across her chest before locking eyes with her, dark with desire.

“Are you sure?” he asked, voice rough.

“I want you,” she breathed, eyes heavy with longing.

Kael’s lips found hers again, more frantic, as his hands worked to peel away her tunic. Her skin was exposed to the cool night air, yet her body felt alight. His mouth tasted her collarbone, her shoulder, then traced down her ribs with open-mouthed kisses.

He knelt before her, kissing her thighs, then lifted her skirts higher, exposing her hips. His lips pressed against her stomach, then lower, planting a kiss just above her hip before teasing her with his tongue.

Her hands gripped his hair, hips arching involuntarily. “Kael,” she gasped. “Please—don’t stop.”

He gripped her hips, holding her steady as he pressed a kiss to her inner thigh, flicking out his tongue to taste her slow and deliberate, making her shudder.

Her hips pushed into his face, eager and desperate. “Kael,” she moaned, voice thick with need, “I need more.”

He rose swiftly, capturing her lips again, tasting her, claiming her with fierce hunger. His hands found his trousers, freeing his arousal, pressing it against her stomach.

“Tell me what you want,” he growled.

“I want all of you,” she whispered, eyes dark. “Please, Kael.”

Without hesitation, he lifted her into his arms, her legs wrapping around his waist, and carried her to the bed. His lips never left hers as he pushed her onto the sheets, covering her, a promise of what’s to come.

His lips traced her jaw, down her neck, over her collarbone before he settled to taste her again, more desperately, their bodies moving in a rhythm driven by raw passion and the unbreakable bond of fated mates.
