76 - Trust and Loyalty
Aria POV
The night was quiet, but inside Aria’s mind, there was no stillness. The weight of the future, of the expectations she carried as Luna, pressed on her chest. She had always known that becoming Luna was not a small thing, but the reality of it was different than she’d ever imagined.
She stood at the windows of the room, the moon light spilling through. The soft breeze stirred the curtains, and she could hear Kael’s steady breathing.
Aria couldn’t escape the uncertainty gnawing at her heart.
“Am I good enough for this?”
The thought haunted her as her mind spiraled through the things she was certain of and the things she wasn’t.
She had always been confident in her role as a healer, as the daughter of the Moonfang’s Doctor. But Luna... Luna was different. She wasn’t just a healer anymore. She would have to lead, to protect the pack as a whole.
And right now, she wasn’t sure if she was ready.
The sound of movement behind her broke through her thoughts. She didn’t need to turn around to know it was Kael. His presence filled the space. Without a word, he crossed the room and stopped behind her, standing just close enough that she could feel the heat of his body.
“What’s on your mind?” His voice was low, a velvet rumble that seemed to echo in the quiet of the room.
Aria hesitated for a moment before turning to face him. His gaze locked onto hers, intense, as if he could see straight through her.
“I’m worried, Kael,” she confessed, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m not sure I’m cut out for this. For being Luna. You were born to lead. You were made for this role. But I...” She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.
Kael took a slow step forward, and he just studied her, taking in the worry etched across her features. It was a look he knew well, but this time, it wasn’t a look of fear. It was the weight of the future, the burden of responsibility... something he had carried for years, and now, it seemed it was Aria’s turn.
“You’re more than capable, Aria,” he said softly.
“You are everything this pack needs. You don’t need to be like me. You don’t need to be like anyone else. You just need to be you.”
Aria shook her head, her heart heavy. “But what if I’m not enough? What if they need more than I can give them? What if I fail them when it matters most?”
Kael’s hand found hers then, and he gently wrapped his fingers around hers, grounding her in the moment. There was no rush, no urgency. He simply held her hand and let the warmth of his touch settle her.
“You’re already enough, Aria,” he whispered, his thumb brushing the back of her hand. “And when you doubt yourself, remember this—I believe in you. The pack believes in you.”
A tremor ran through her as she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. There was a rawness in Kael’s voice that surprised her. She could feel his belief in her. But more than that, it made her realize something she hadn’t allowed herself to see before.
She wasn’t alone. Not in this. Not in anything.
“I don’t know if I can be the Luna they expect me to be,” she said softly, the weight of the words heavy on her tongue. “What if I can’t protect them the way they need me to?”
Kael’s eyes never left hers as he spoke. “We’ll protect them, Aria. You and me. Together. I’ve had my doubts too, you know. Even after everything I’ve done. Every decision I’ve made as Alpha, there’s always that voice in the back of my head questioning my loyalty. My ability to lead.”
Aria’s brows furrowed in confusion. “But you’re Alpha, Kael. You’ve always been confident. You’ve always known your place.”
He smiled softly, but there was a shadow of something darker in his gaze. “You’d be surprised. The weight of loyalty... it can be suffocating. Sometimes, I’ve questioned whether I’ve made the right choices. Whether I can trust everyone around me. But I’ve learned that it’s okay to lean on those I trust. I’ve learned that I don’t have to carry this burden alone.” His hand moved to cup her cheek, lifting her face until their eyes were locked. “And I trust you, Aria. I trust you more than anyone else in this world.”
Aria’s heart swelled at the honesty in his eyes. She could see the vulnerability in him—the scars of his past, the weight of his decisions, and the pain of carrying it all. Her heart ached for him, understanding him in a way she never had before.
“Kael, you’ve sacrificed for the pack. You don’t have to carry it all alone. We’ll face the future together.”
Without another word, Kael leaned in and kissed her. It was slow and gentle. Aria felt the weight of everything between them—their struggles, their hopes, their fears—and in that kiss, it all seemed to melt away. For a moment, it was just the two of them, bound together by trust, loyalty, and love.
When they finally pulled apart, Kael rested his forehead against hers, breathing her in. “I love you, Aria,” he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I know we’re meant for this. For each other. I don’t need anything else. As long as I have you.”
A warmth bloomed in her chest, and she smiled, her heart lighter than it had been in days. “I love you too, Kael.”
For a long while, they stayed in that moment, wrapped in each other’s presence, allowing the weight of the world to slip away. The rogue threat, the battle ahead—none of it mattered in that moment. They had each other, and that was enough.
Eventually, Aria pulled away slightly, her hand still clasped in his. “There’s something else,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kael raised an eyebrow, curious. “What is it?”
She hesitated, her heart racing as she gathered the courage to voice her thoughts. “I’m not just a healer, Kael. I’ve been trainig, and I want to fight too. I want to stand beside you on the front lines.”
Kael’s eyes softened, and he reached out to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed against her skin gently, as if memorizing the feel of her. “Aria… you don’t have to. I won’t put you in harm’s way.”
Aria held his gaze firmly. I want to be there with you. I want to heal, yes, but I also want to protect.”
Kael’s gaze darkened with a mixture of pride and concern. He didn’t respond immediately, but his grip on her hand tightened. “If this is truly what you want…”
Aria’s chest swelled with gratitude. “I trust you, Kael. More than anything.”
“And I trust you,” he replied softly. “We’ll be stronger together. Always.”
In that moment, Aria realized that despite their doubts, their insecurities, they would face whatever came next. With each other. And that, for them, was enough.
