Chapter 267 – The Containment Unit

Chapter 267 – The Containment Unit
The massive figure stepped fully into the chamber, and the ground trembled beneath its weight.
Nyra felt the pressure immediately.
This wasn’t like the Custodians they had fought before. Those creatures were powerful, but they still followed predictable combat patterns.
This thing felt… different.
Alive in a way the others weren’t.
The crimson glow in its helmet burned brighter as it scanned the room. Streams of Ash energy flowed across its armor like molten lines, constantly shifting and rearranging.
The Network voice echoed again, distorted and mechanical.
“Containment protocol active.”
“Target anomaly: Lira.”
The giant lifted its arm and pointed directly at her.
Nyra stepped forward instantly, blocking the line between them.
“You’ll have to go through us first.”
The figure didn’t answer.
Instead, it moved.
Faster than anything its size should have been capable of.
In a blur of dark Ash, the giant crossed half the chamber and slammed its fist into the ground.
The impact exploded outward in a violent shockwave.
“MOVE!” Raze shouted.
Nyra grabbed Lira and pulled her sideways just as the wave shattered the crystal pillars around them. Shards of glowing Ash scattered across the floor like broken glass.
Raze rolled to his feet and launched forward.
His blade ignited with bright energy as he struck at the giant’s side.
The weapon connected with a loud metallic crack.
But the armor barely moved.
“Great,” Raze muttered. “It’s built like a mountain.”
The Containment Unit swung its arm backward.
Raze barely ducked in time as the strike blasted through another crystal formation, sending fragments raining across the chamber.
Nyra’s Ash flared around her hands.
She thrust both palms forward.
A wave of silver-violet energy surged toward the giant, wrapping around its legs like chains.
“Hold it down!” she shouted.
For a moment, the Ash bindings tightened.
The giant slowed.
But then the crimson light in its helmet flared.
The chains shattered.
Nyra staggered backward.
“That shouldn’t have broken so easily…”
Lira stepped closer to her, fear written across her face.
“It’s not just strong,” she said quickly.
“It adapts.”
Raze jumped backward to avoid another crushing strike.
“Yeah, I noticed!”
The giant turned its attention back to Lira.
Every movement it made seemed calculated.
Precise.
Like a machine designed for one purpose.
Capture.
Nyra clenched her fists.
“If it’s adapting to our attacks, then we change tactics.”
She extended her Ash senses outward, searching for weaknesses.
But the armor blocked most energy scans.
Almost perfectly.
Almost.
Her Core shard pulsed suddenly.
A strange sensation spread through her chest, like something deep inside the Network had just recognized her presence.
Nyra froze.
“What…?”
Raze deflected another heavy blow and looked at her.
“Not the best time to zone out!”
“I’m not zoning out,” Nyra said slowly.
“The Core is reacting.”
The giant suddenly lunged forward again, reaching directly for Lira.
Raze intercepted it, his blade clashing against the armored arm.
The force of the impact threw him across the chamber.
He slammed against the floor and groaned.
“Okay,” he coughed. “That thing hits like a collapsing building.”
Nyra stepped forward.
The Core shard pulsed harder now.
Something new was happening.
Something she had never felt before.
The Ash in the room began responding to her presence.
Not just the Ash she controlled.
All of it.
The crystals.
The conduits.
Even the scattered fragments across the floor.
They began to glow.
Lira noticed immediately.
“Nyra… what are you doing?”
Nyra shook her head slightly.
“I don’t know.”
The giant turned toward her.
For the first time, it hesitated.
Nyra raised her hand slowly.
The Ash around the chamber lifted into the air.
Hundreds of glowing fragments floated upward, forming a swirling field around her.
Raze stared from the floor.
“Oh… that’s new.”
The Containment Unit charged again.
But this time Nyra didn’t dodge.
She stepped forward.
And the entire chamber moved with her.
The floating Ash fragments shot forward like a storm of blazing arrows.
They slammed into the giant’s armor from every direction.
Explosions of energy cracked across its body.
The crimson light in its helmet flickered.
The giant stumbled backward.
Nyra felt power rushing through her veins.
Not wild power.
Controlled.
Precise.
The Core wasn’t just amplifying her abilities.
It was giving her command over the entire environment.
The giant raised its arm again, preparing another strike.
Nyra clenched her fist.
The Ash storm tightened.
Crystal shards slammed into the giant’s joints and armor seams with brutal force.
The massive figure dropped to one knee.
Raze slowly pushed himself up.
“Well,” he said, brushing dust off his coat, “remind me not to get on your bad side.”
But the battle wasn’t over.
The Containment Unit’s armor split open along its chest.
Inside, a glowing crimson core began to spin faster.
Lira’s eyes widened in horror.
“It’s entering override mode!”
Raze groaned.
“Of course it is.”
The crimson light expanded violently.
Energy surged through the chamber walls.
Nyra felt the Core shard react again.
But this time the sensation wasn’t control.
It was warning.
Her eyes widened.
“That thing’s about to explode.”
Raze grabbed Lira’s arm.
“That’s our cue to leave.”
The far side of the chamber suddenly shifted.
A doorway appeared within the wall.
Not a normal exit.
A dark archway filled with swirling Ash energy.
Lira pointed at it.
“That’s it!”
“The hidden door!”
Nyra looked back at the giant.
Its core was glowing brighter every second.
The explosion would destroy the entire chamber.
“Everyone run!” she shouted.
They sprinted toward the doorway as the giant’s energy reached critical levels.
The floor behind them cracked.
Ash conduits burst open.
The chamber filled with blinding crimson light.
Raze dove through the doorway first.
Lira followed.
Nyra leapt through just as the Containment Unit detonated.
The explosion roared behind them.
The hidden door sealed shut instantly.
Silence followed.
Nyra slowly stood up.
They were no longer inside the same chamber.
This place was different.
Darker.
Older.
The walls were covered in ancient Ash symbols none of them had seen before.
Raze looked around slowly.
“Well,” he said.
“This definitely isn’t part of the normal Network.”
Lira’s voice trembled slightly.
“This… this is the place I found before.”
Nyra stepped forward carefully.
The Core shard in her chest pulsed slowly.
Whatever this hidden layer was…
The Pyre Network had tried very hard to keep people out.
And now they were inside it.
