Chapter 268 – The Forgotten Layer

Chapter 268 – The Forgotten Layer
For several seconds, none of them spoke.
The silence in this new place felt thick, almost ancient, as if the air itself had been undisturbed for centuries.
Nyra slowly stood, brushing the dust from her hands. The explosion from the chamber behind them had completely disappeared. The hidden doorway had sealed like it had never existed.
Raze looked around cautiously.
“Well,” he said quietly, “this place definitely didn’t show up on the Network tour guide.”
Lira nodded uneasily.
“This is the place I saw before… but I didn’t get this far.”
Nyra studied the environment carefully.
The architecture here was different from every part of the Pyre Network they had seen so far. The walls were darker, carved from stone-like Ash that looked far older than the glowing crystal structures above the main layers.
Ancient symbols covered the surfaces.
Strange spirals.
Long flowing lines.
And shapes that almost resembled eyes.
Nyra stepped closer to one of the walls. The Core shard in her chest pulsed softly as her fingers brushed the carvings.
The moment she touched them, the symbols faintly lit up.
Raze raised an eyebrow.
“Okay… that’s not creepy at all.”
Lira moved closer, studying the glowing markings.
“I’ve never seen Ash react like that before.”
Nyra felt a strange sensation spreading through her mind.
Like distant whispers.
Not voices exactly.
Memories.
Images flickered briefly across her thoughts.
Huge structures rising into the sky.
Ancient figures working together.
Streams of Ash flowing like rivers through enormous machines.
Nyra pulled her hand away quickly.
The symbols dimmed again.
“What did you see?” Raze asked.
Nyra hesitated.
“I think… these are records.”
“Records?” Lira repeated.
Nyra nodded slowly.
“Not written records. Memory records.”
She looked back at the wall.
“The people who built this layer stored their knowledge inside the Ash itself.”
Raze crossed his arms.
“So this is like… an ancient archive?”
“Something like that,” Nyra said.
“But it’s hidden for a reason.”
They began walking deeper into the chamber.
The corridor widened slowly as they moved forward. The symbols along the walls became more complex, telling stories through glowing patterns and shifting lines.
Lira suddenly stopped walking.
“Wait.”
Nyra turned.
“What is it?”
Lira pointed toward the far end of the corridor.
“There.”
At the end of the hall stood a massive circular door.
Unlike the other doors in the Network, this one looked ancient and mechanical at the same time. Thick rings of Ash metal surrounded it, layered with thousands of tiny symbols.
At the center was a deep indentation.
The exact size of a Core shard.
Raze looked at Nyra.
“Well… that’s not subtle.”
Nyra approached the door carefully.
Her Core shard pulsed again, stronger this time.
“This door was designed for someone like me.”
Lira frowned.
“You mean a Core bearer?”
Nyra nodded.
“Exactly.”
She studied the door more closely.
The Ash rings around it were locked in place, unmoving.
But the symbols surrounding the indentation slowly glowed brighter as she got closer.
Raze leaned against the wall.
“So what do you think is inside?”
Nyra didn’t answer right away.
Because the moment she stepped within arm’s reach of the door…
The whispers returned.
Stronger this time.
A single message formed clearly in her mind.
“Access restricted.”
Nyra froze.
Raze noticed immediately.
“What’s wrong?”
Nyra’s voice came out slowly.
“The door just spoke to me.”
Lira blinked.
“That’s… new.”
Nyra stared at the Core indentation.
“It says access is restricted.”
Raze sighed.
“Of course it is.”
Nyra placed her hand near the center of the door.
The symbols flared brightly.
Another message echoed through her mind.
“System incomplete.”
Her eyes widened.
“Incomplete?”
Lira stepped closer.
“What does that mean?”
Nyra looked down at the glowing Core shard beneath her skin.
“I think…”
She paused.
“The system needs more than one Core.”
Raze straightened.
“How many?”
Nyra slowly shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Suddenly, the ground trembled.
The entire corridor shook violently.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Raze grabbed the wall to steady himself.
“Please tell me that’s not another containment unit.”
Lira looked back toward the dark corridor they had entered from.
Her face slowly turned pale.
“I think it’s worse.”
A deep rumbling sound echoed through the hidden layer.
Not footsteps.
Not machinery.
Something heavier.
Older.
Nyra felt the Ash around them react violently.
Like prey sensing a predator.
The darkness behind them began to move.
A massive shape slowly emerged from the shadows at the far end of the corridor.
Its body was enormous.
Larger than the containment unit.
Larger than anything they had faced before.
Its form was made entirely of ancient Ash stone, covered with the same symbols carved into the walls.
Two enormous glowing eyes opened in the darkness.
The creature spoke in a voice that sounded like grinding mountains.
“Unauthorized presence detected.”
Raze stared at it.
“Oh good.”
He drew his blade again.
“We woke up the landlord.”
Nyra stepped forward slowly, her Ash beginning to glow.
But deep down, she felt the truth.
This wasn’t just another guardian.
This thing had been here long before the modern Network.
It wasn’t defending the system.
It was the system.
And they had just stepped into its domain.
