Chapter 266 – The Girl the Network Tried to Silence
Chapter 266 – The Girl the Network Tried to Silence
For several minutes, none of them spoke.
The chamber behind them slowly faded into darkness as the new corridor opened ahead. The floor glowed faintly beneath their feet, guiding them forward with a soft silver pulse.
Lira walked unsteadily beside Nyra, still catching her breath. Her movements were careful, like someone relearning how to use their body after being frozen for too long.
Raze glanced at her. “You sure you’re okay?”
Lira nodded, though the confusion in her eyes hadn’t fully disappeared.
“I think so,” she said quietly. “Everything feels… distant.”
Nyra studied her closely. Lira’s Ash signature was unusual. It flickered with irregular waves, like a signal that refused to stabilize.
That wasn’t normal.
Most Ashbearers developed a steady rhythm once bonded to the Network.
But Lira’s energy moved like a storm trying to break free.
Nyra slowed her steps.
“How long were you trapped in that pillar?”
Lira frowned slightly.
“I… don’t know.”
Her voice trembled.
“The last thing I remember… I was running.”
Raze raised an eyebrow. “Running from what?”
Lira hesitated.
Her eyes darted around the corridor, as if afraid something might still be following her.
“From the Custodians.”
Nyra and Raze exchanged a quick glance.
That wasn’t surprising. Many trial runners faced Custodians.
But the fear in Lira’s voice felt different.
“They weren’t testing me,” she continued softly.
“They were hunting me.”
Raze stopped walking.
“Hunting?”
Lira nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
Nyra felt a chill creep through her chest.
“The Network doesn’t hunt its runners,” she said carefully.
“Every trial is designed to challenge, not eliminate.”
Lira’s expression darkened.
“That’s what I thought too.”
They continued walking deeper into the corridor as she spoke.
“But I started noticing something strange during my trials.”
“The challenges kept changing.”
Nyra tilted her head. “Adapting?”
Lira shook her head.
“No… breaking.”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“The trials stopped making sense.”
The corridor suddenly widened into another chamber, this one filled with tall crystalline structures that hummed quietly with Ash energy.
Nyra slowed down, listening carefully.
“What do you mean?”
Lira stepped between the crystals, running her fingers along their glowing surfaces.
“At first, the trials followed patterns.”
“Strategy tests. Combat tests. Moral decisions.”
Raze nodded. “That’s how it works.”
“But then,” Lira said, “the system started… glitching.”
Nyra felt her Core shard pulse sharply.
Glitching?
That word didn’t belong in the Pyre Network.
Lira continued.
“Custodians began appearing in places they weren’t supposed to.”
“Pathways collapsed without warning.”
“Trial exits vanished.”
She stopped walking and turned toward them.
“And then the Network locked me inside that pillar.”
Silence fell.
Raze crossed his arms slowly.
“That doesn’t sound like a trial.”
“No,” Lira said.
“It felt like a containment.”
Nyra’s heartbeat quickened.
Containment.
The word echoed loudly in her mind.
“Why would the Network contain you?” Nyra asked.
Lira hesitated again.
“I think…” she said slowly, “I saw something I wasn’t supposed to see.”
The crystals around them flickered slightly.
Nyra’s Core shard reacted instantly, pulsing with a warning.
“What did you see?” Raze asked.
Lira’s voice dropped even lower.
“A hidden layer of the Network.”
Nyra’s eyes widened.
“That’s impossible.”
The Pyre Network was already massive and complex.
Every known sector had been mapped by countless Ashbearers over generations.
“There’s no hidden layer,” Raze said firmly.
Lira shook her head.
“There is.”
Her hands trembled slightly as she spoke.
“I found it by accident during a navigation trial.”
“A door appeared that wasn’t supposed to exist.”
Nyra felt a cold sensation spread across her spine.
“What kind of door?”
Lira looked directly at her.
“One that responded to your Core signature.”
Nyra froze.
Raze turned slowly toward her.
“Well,” he muttered, “that can’t be a coincidence.”
The crystals in the chamber suddenly pulsed brighter.
The ground trembled faintly beneath their feet.
Nyra extended her Ash senses outward.
Something was moving through the Network.
Fast.
Too fast.
Raze felt it too.
“Oh no.”
Nyra’s voice dropped.
“Custodians.”
Lira shook her head quickly.
“No.”
Her face went pale.
“Not Custodians.”
The tremor beneath them grew stronger.
The chamber lights flickered.
From the far corridor, a deep metallic sound echoed closer.
Heavy footsteps.
Slow.
Controlled.
Nyra felt the Ash in the room tighten like a coiled spring.
“What is it?” she asked.
Lira’s voice barely escaped her lips.
“The thing that chased me.”
The corridor behind them exploded with blinding light.
A massive figure stepped into the chamber.
It was taller than any Custodian they had ever seen.
Its armor was darker than shadow itself, covered in flowing lines of burning Ash.
But the most terrifying part wasn’t its size.
It was its eyes.
Two bright cores of crimson energy burned within its helmet.
Nyra felt her Core shard react violently.
The Network voice echoed across the chamber.
But this time…
It sounded distorted.
“Unauthorized anomaly detected.”
“Containment unit deployed.”
Raze slowly pulled his weapon free.
“Well,” he said grimly, “looks like the Network really didn’t want her getting out.”
The towering figure raised its hand.
Ash energy surged across the chamber walls.
Nyra stepped forward beside Raze.
Her Ash flared brightly.
“Then we’re about to give it a very bad day.”
The giant moved.
And the battle began.
