Chapter 74: The Eclipse Awakens

The moment Alex’s fingers touched the Eclipse Stone, the world vanished.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

The scar on his palm flared with unbearable heat.

His wolf howled, frantic and disoriented.

There was no ground beneath his feet.

No sky above.

Only shadows.

And in that endless void, a voice whispered.

Welcome, Alpha.

The words crawled through his mind like ice.

His scar pulsed violently.

The Eclipse Stone grew heavier in his grasp.

It wasn’t just an object.

It was a tether.

A direct link to something vast and malevolent.

Nyx Aeternum.

The wolf in him recoiled.

Alex’s jaw clenched.

"Get out of my head."

The shadows thickened.

Nyx’s voice was calm.

Patient.

Why fight me, Alpha? You already know the truth.

The stone pulsed against his palm.

His vision flickered.

Images flooded his mind

The grove was shattered and lifeless.

The moon is black and cold.

His pack was broken and scattered.

The shadows whispered relentlessly.

The moon’s power is dying. And when it falls…

The image shifted.

Cain, bleeding out beside the oak.

Maya, torn apart on the den’s steps.

The Elder crumpled beneath twisted roots.

Your pack will die with it.

Alex’s heart raced.

The shadows pressed harder.

Unless...

The scene shifted again.

The moon above the grove glowed blood-red.

Alex stood beneath it, taller, stronger.

The shadows knelt before him.

Cain and Maya stood beside him alive and unbroken.

The pack thrived.

The voice softened.

Join me, Alpha.

The scar on Alex’s palm flared in response.

The stone's energy coiled around his heart.

Together, we can save them.

His breath caught.

The moon pulsed faintly overhead.

Weak. Vulnerable.

The power Nyx promised was undeniable.

And the cost…

Was everything.

Cain paced the cavern floor, gripping his axe tightly.

Maya knelt beside Alex's body.

His hand still grasped the Eclipse Stone.

His eyes were open but unfocused.

His breathing was shallow.

The Elder hovered nearby, chanting softly.

The Warden had vanished when Alex touched the stone.

Now, the catacombs felt colder.

The lunar veins along the walls dimmed.

Cain growled low.

"This doesn’t feel right."

Maya ran a hand over Alex’s wrist.

His pulse was weak.

"He's trapped," she said.

"Something’s got him."

The Elder straightened.

"It’s Nyx," he said grimly.

Cain swore under his breath.

"Then let’s pull the damn stone away from him."

The Elder raised his hand.

"No!"

Cain froze.

"Why not?"

"If we break the connection forcefully," the Elder said, "Nyx could pull Alex through entirely."

Maya’s eyes widened.

"You mean... it could take him?"

The Elder nodded.

"Yes. And if Nyx claims Alex…"

He didn’t need to finish the sentence.

Cain's grip tightened on his axe.

"We have to get him back," Cain said.

The Elder moved to Alex's side.

"I can try to reach him," the Elder said.

"But his wolf has to fight."

Cain exchanged a tense glance with Maya.

"Alex never gives up," Cain said.

Maya exhaled shakily.

"Then we just have to give him time."

The Elder placed both hands on Alex's temples.

His eyes closed.

The air crackled with moonlight.

Cain and Maya formed a protective circle around them.

The shadows along the catacomb walls stirred.

Nyx was watching.

And it didn't like being interrupted.

The shadows pressed tighter against Alex’s mind.

Nyx’s voice coiled around his thoughts.

You feel it, don’t you? The weight. The endless struggle.

The stone pulsed in his hand.

The moon demands sacrifice. It takes, and takes... and takes.

The image shifted.

Kara appeared before him.

Her ghostly form wavered, just as it had the night she sacrificed herself.

"She died for nothing," Nyx whispered.

The image changed.

Kara’s misty figure stood beside the silver oak.

The tree cracked.

The roots blackened.

Her eyes turned hollow.

Her voice echoed softly:

"Why did you let me go, Alex?"

His breath caught.

His wolf whined in agony.

"No," Alex said, voice shaking.

The vision of Kara stepped closer.

Her features contorted with sorrow.

"You could’ve saved me. You just had to let the moon go."

Nyx’s voice layered over hers.

Release the moon. Release the pain. Save your pack.

The scar on his palm burned hotter.

The stone pulsed in his grip.

The temptation was suffocating.

The wolf inside him clawed for control.

Alex squeezed his eyes shut.

The shadows pressed harder.

The fake Kara reached for his hand.

"Let go, Alex. Save the pack."

His fingers began to loosen around the stone.

The darkness surged, ready to claim him.

His wolf howled one last time.

No.

Alex froze.

The voice wasn’t his wolf.

And it wasn’t Nyx.

It was hers.

Kara.

The shadows recoiled.

The vision of Kara’s hollow face shattered.

Her real voice echoed softly:

"Don't let go, Alex. Not now."

The scar on his palm flared again.

This time, the pain was sharp and real.

His wolf surged upward.

The bond with the moon snapped taut.

His grip on the stone strengthened.

The shadows screeched in rage.

Nyx's voice roared through his mind.

You cannot defy me, Alpha!

Alex’s eyes snapped open.

They burned silver.

"Watch me," he growled.

He ripped his consciousness free.

The shadows collapsed inward.

The stone burned cold against his palm.

The darkness shattered.

His senses exploded back into place.

The catacombs came into focus.

Cain and Maya stood above him, tense and ready.

The Elder knelt beside him.

"Alex?" Maya’s voice was cautious.

He sat up slowly, breathing hard.

His wolf was exhausted but alert.

The scar still pulsed.

The stone still glowed faintly.

But the voice of Nyx was gone.

For now.

Alex met their anxious gazes.

"I’m back," he said hoarsely.

Cain grinned with relief.

"About damn time."

The Elder helped Alex to his feet.

The Eclipse Stone remained cold in his palm.

The veins across its surface pulsed softly with silver and black energy.

"What happened?" the Elder asked.

"Nyx tried to use the stone to break me," Alex said.

He swallowed hard.

"It used Kara against me."

Maya’s face fell.

"But she... stopped it?"

Alex nodded.

"Yeah."

Cain exhaled.

"Even gone, she’s still saving your stubborn ass."

Alex gave a faint, exhausted smile.

The Elder examined the stone.

"The stone responded to you," the Elder said.

"That means you're the rightful bearer."

"Now what?" Alex asked.

The Elder pointed to the scar on his palm.

"The stone is bound to you through your scar. If we can take it to the grove and channel its energy through Kara’s essence..."

His voice trailed off.

Maya’s eyes widened.

"We can create the Lunar Aegis."

The Elder nodded.

"Exactly. The shield can protect the moon’s connection to Earth and block Nyx’s influence."

Cain lifted his axe onto his shoulder.

"So we get back to the grove, right?"

The Elder hesitated.

"Nyx won’t let us walk away that easily."

Alex’s wolf stirred at the truth of those words.

He turned toward the catacomb’s exit.

"Then we run."

The pack sprinted through the tunnels.

The walls trembled as they passed.

The shadows along the ceiling writhed with fury.

Nyx was awake.

The scar on Alex’s palm burned hotter with each step.

The Eclipse Stone throbbed in his grip.

The exit came into view with a faint glow at the end of the corridor.

Then the ground shook violently.

The shadows lunged from the walls.

Tendrils shot toward Alex.

Cain swung his axe, severing one.

Maya hurled silver blades into the mist.

The tendrils re-formed instantly.

The Elder planted his staff.

"Lunar shield!" he shouted.

A dome of pale light flared around the pack.

The shadows recoiled, hissing.

Alex’s pulse quickened.

"They're trying to stop the stone from leaving," he said.

The Elder gritted his teeth.

"They won’t stop until we cross the ley line threshold."

The stone pulsed in Alex’s hand.

His wolf snapped with frustration.

Faster.

The tunnel behind them collapsed.

The shadows swirled furiously.

Cain’s eyes flashed gold.

"We’re running out of time!"

The Elder’s shield wavered.

Alex's instincts screamed.

The stone burned against his palm.

The wolf within surged forward.

The moon’s bond answered.

Alex roared.

Silver energy flared through his veins.

The scar on his palm ignited.

He grasped the Elder’s staff with his free hand.

The lunar shield expanded outward like a shockwave.

The shadows shattered.

The exit yawned open ahead.

"Go!" Alex shouted.

The pack sprinted toward the surface.

The shadows howled behind them.

The tunnel collapsed entirely as they crossed the threshold.

They burst from the canyon’s edge just as the ground caved inward.

The catacombs collapsed into darkness.

The earth groaned one last time…

Then fell silent.

Alex collapsed to his knees.

The Eclipse Stone glowed faintly in his palm.

Maya dropped beside him, breathing hard.

Cain paced, axe ready.

The Elder knelt beside the stone.

"It’s ours now," the Elder said softly.

Alex exhaled shakily.

"Yeah."

The scar on his palm pulsed.

The moon above shimmered faintly.

They’d won this battle.

But Nyx was still out there.

Watching.

Waiting.

And the eclipse had only just begun.
