Chapter 73: The Road to the Catacombs

The moonlight felt wrong.

Alex stood at the grove, eyes fixed on the sky.

The moon still glowed, but its edges blurred faintly.

Like a candle flickering against an invisible wind.

The scar on his palm pulsed with sharp, erratic beats.

His wolf shifted uneasily.

The moon was afraid.

Kara’s sacrifice had restored the bond.

But Nyx Aeternum was unrelenting.

The Eternal Eclipse wasn’t just a threat.

It was coming.

And the only hope of stopping it…

Lay in the Lunar Catacombs.

The den was filled with tension.

The Elder spread a map of the surrounding wilderness across the table.

A jagged canyon marked the catacombs' location.

"Here," the Elder said, tapping the map.

"The Lunar Catacombs lie beneath the Eclipse Gorge."

Cain traced the route with his finger.

"That’s nearly forty miles into uncharted territory," he muttered.

"Past Ravenspire’s old borders," Maya added.

The Elder nodded grimly.

"No pack has ventured there in decades. The area was abandoned after Ravenspire fell."

Alex leaned forward.

"And that's exactly why Nyx chose it."

The Elder's expression tightened.

"Yes. The ley lines there are strong. And it's a natural convergence point for lunar magic."

Cain cracked his neck.

"Then we go in, grab the stone, and get out."

The Elder hesitated.

"It's not that simple."

He turned the map over.

A faded diagram of the catacombs covered the reverse side.

Lines spiraled inward toward a central chamber.

A crescent moon symbol marked the core.

The Elder tapped it.

"The Eclipse Stone is buried in the heart of the catacombs," the Elder said.

"But legend says the stone is guarded."

Maya frowned.

"Guarded by what?"

The Elder's voice dropped.

"The Lunar Warden."

Cain blinked.

"That sounds... unfriendly."

The Elder's jaw tightened.

"The Warden was created to protect the stone from anyone who would misuse it. It doesn't distinguish friend from foe."

Alex exhaled slowly.

"So we’ll have to fight it."

The Elder gave a reluctant nod.

"And if the Warden falls... the catacombs will collapse."

Cain clapped his hands together.

"Great. So we grab the stone while dodging an ancient moon-powered guardian and hope the place doesn't kill us. Got it."

Maya gave a strained smile.

"Sounds like a typical Crescent Fang mission."

Alex straightened.

"We leave at dusk."

The scar on his palm burned in agreement.

The moon was waiting.

The pack left Lunar Heights as the sun dipped below the skyline.

Alex led in wolf form.

Cain and Maya flanked him.

The Elder followed on foot, staff glowing faintly with moonlight.

The city faded behind them.

The wilderness thickened around them.

The moon rose high overhead.

Its glow was sharp.

Too sharp.

Maya noticed it first.

"The moonlight... it’s not natural," she said.

Cain sniffed the air.

"It smells like ozone."

Alex paused atop a ridge.

The scar on his palm flared.

The moonlight cast elongated shadows.

The shadows shifted unnaturally.

Not with the wind.

But with purpose.

The wolf in him growled softly.

"They’re watching us," Alex muttered.

Cain's grip tightened on his axe.

"Who?"

The shadows coiled along the ground.

A figure rose from the darkness near the ridge.

Thin.

Tall.

Eyes glowing faint violet.

Alex shifted to human form and stepped forward.

The others fell into defensive positions.

The shadowy figure smiled faintly.

The Alpha comes, it said softly.

Its voice was layered and dissonant.

Alex’s scar pulsed harder.

"Who are you?"

The figure tilted its head.

Nyx’s Harbinger.

Cain swore under his breath.

"Of course, it has messengers now."

Alex raised his voice.

"Why does Nyx want the stone?"

The Harbinger's smile widened.

The stone anchors the moon’s light.

Its gaze fixed on Alex's palm.

The scar makes you the key. But the stone…

The figure’s eyes glimmered.

The stone makes Nyx the master.

The wolf inside Alex snapped to attention.

Nyx wasn’t just trying to sever the moon’s bond.

It was trying to control it.

Maya stepped forward.

"Not gonna happen," she growled.

The Harbinger chuckled softly.

You cannot stop the eclipse.

Its body dissolved into shadows.

The moon above dimmed slightly.

Cain gripped his axe.

"That was creepy as hell."

Alex’s fists clenched.

The moon wasn't just under attack.

It was being hijacked.

"Move," Alex ordered.

"We need that stone. Now."

The pack reached Eclipse Gorge just before midnight.

The canyon yawned before them a jagged scar in the earth.

The air crackled with lunar energy.

The Elder knelt at the edge.

"The ley lines converge here," he said.

Maya scanned the area.

"See that?" she pointed across the gorge.

Alex followed her gaze.

On the far side, half-buried in rock, stood a stone arch.

Weathered. Cracked.

Moon runes are faintly etched along the surface.

The entrance to the catacombs.

"That’s our door," Alex said.

The scar on his palm flared again.

The arch shimmered faintly.

The stone reacted to him.

He took a breath.

"Let’s go."

The catacombs smelled of damp stone and old magic.

The air crackled faintly as they descended through narrow tunnels.

The walls glowed softly with lunar veins.

The scar on Alex’s palm guided him.

The stone called to him.

But so did something else.

The shadows along the walls shifted unnaturally.

Maya caught it first.

"Shadows," she hissed.

Cain raised his axe.

"Again?"

The Elder’s staff glowed brighter.

"These aren't from Nyx," the Elder said.

"Then what" Cain began.

The ground shook violently.

The shadows along the walls peeled away.

They merged in the center of the tunnel.

A towering figure formed.

Its body was pale stone etched with glowing runes.

Its eyes burned silver.

The Lunar Warden.

Its voice rumbled like breaking rock:

Who seeks the Eclipse Stone?

The Elder raised his staff.

"We come to protect it," the Elder said.

The Warden's eyes shifted to Alex.

The scarred one...

The runes on its chest glowed brighter.

The moon's mark lies with you.

Alex stepped forward.

"I am Alex Kane, Alpha of Crescent Fang."

He extended his scarred palm.

The runes reacted instantly, flaring silver.

The Warden shifted slightly.

The stone is bound to the moon. Only the marked may claim it.

Alex's heart raced.

The scar burned like ice beneath the Warden’s gaze.

Maya tightened her grip on her knives.

Cain whispered, "I don’t like this."

The Warden raised its stone hand toward Alex.

Do you claim the burden of the Eclipse Stone?

Alex’s wolf bristled.

The scar pulsed furiously.

The moon above trembled.

He met the Warden’s glowing eyes.

"I do."

The Warden’s form shuddered.

The runes brightened.

The stone beneath Alex’s feet split open.

The cavern shook.

A pedestal rose from the ground.

Atop it lay the Eclipse Stone.

A smooth, black crystal.

Silver veins pulsed across its surface like a heartbeat.

The Warden’s voice rumbled.

Take the stone. And face the eclipse.

Alex reached out.

His fingers brushed the stone.

The scar on his palm flared blindingly bright.

His vision darkened.

The catacombs vanished.

The moon above turned black.

And the voice of Nyx Aeternum filled his mind.

Welcome, Alpha. The eclipse begins now.
