“What do you want?” Kyra tilted her chin up to ask him, shoving down the stupid thought about hugging him.
“What do I want?” Anton asked her as he stared down at her, “What I want is for you to explain what’s going on in this little head of yours. I can see your brain turning and calculating. I only said you belong to me, and you flared up.” He used his fingers to tap her forehead.
“Nothing is going on in my head. I don’t like the fact that you said you own me. You don’t own people, you only own things.”
“And if you bought that person with money?”
Okay, Kyra did not know how to respond to him. What she could only say was, “My father did not have the right to sell me.”
“But he did, didn’t he?” Anton asked her and a suffocating feeling filled Kyra’s chest at the question, making it difficult for her to breathe.
“Let's drop this topic, shall we? I’m tired and I need to rest.”
Anton immediately pulled away from Kyra causing her to sigh deeply in relief.
“Yes, of course. With everything that’s happening you need your beauty sleep.”
If she was surprised at his quick agreement, it did not show. Kyra gathered her gown so that she could walk out of the room but when she tried to walk past him, he grabbed her arm to stop her.
She knew it. He would never let her leave so easily. “Anything else, alpha?” She asked, not glancing at him.
“I’m yet to apply anything in your leg.”
“Oh?” Kyra pressed her foot harder against the floor and winced when pain shot through her. With the way she jumped to her feet, her mind had been focused on the conclusions she just drew up about him; she totally forgot about her leg. “It’s not much of a big deal. Cynthia would help me treat it tomorrow.”
“I’ll do it now and don’t even bother to argue.”
“Fine.” Kyra hugged under her breath before limping to sit on his bed again, without much thought this time.
Neither of them said a word as Anton went down on his knees before her for the umpteenth time today and began to apply ointment and massage her ankle. Kyra sucked in her teeth as he rubbed the leg. Even if he did it softly and carefully, it was still painful.
“I’m done. Now let’s get you to your room.”
This time, when Anton reached to carry her in his arms, Kyra dodged his hands but leaned against him and let him lead her back to her quarters.
At the door of her room, Kyra turned to say goodnight to him, and he reached for her hand and brought it up to his lips to kiss the back of it.
“Goodnight, love. Sleep well and dream about me.” Then he was gone. Turning and sauntering away so majestically like he did not just send her brain on overdrive.
Kyra stood there, speechless as she watched him get further and further away from her. It wasn’t until he was out of sight did she turn to slowly walk into her room.
It was about two hours since Kyra lay on the bed, and she couldn’t sleep. There were a lot of things that were on her mind, but she couldn’t pinpoint which to sort out first. All she knew was that there was nothing she could do to relieve the ache that she felt in her heart.
Kyra felt too lazy to take her bath so she just pulled off her gown and directly got into bed. She laid on her back, staring up at the ceiling as everything that happened tonight flashed in her mind and the gravity of it hit her.
Kyra did not know when she burst into silent sobs as she remembered what happened in the carriage. She’s been so close to death. She’s never been so scared in her life than at that minute when she thought that she would never get to see her baby and that the both of them would die. She was not this scared when she stood in front of those alphas who wanted to bid on her.
She offered a little prayer of thanks to the moon goddess for her safety and that of her child when her tears had finally subsided.
She turned towards the wall, and felt the soft kick her baby gave in her tummy. Kyra placed her hand over it with wide eyes, shocked to feel it at this stage of her pregnancy. “Oh, goddess!” She whispered lightly as she sat up on the bed.
Kyra rubbed a hand continuously on her belly as she felt on top of the world. She honestly could not believe that she had a life growing inside her until that very moment. It felt so real and that brought a joyful smile to her lips.
“Mother is going to love you like you’re the rarest treasure in the world. You can’t even imagine what I would do for you, baby,” she said softly as she smiled.
Her baby kicked in response to her words, and it made her smile so huge. “You’re just too adorable, precious child, and now, I would have to sleep well because of you. I love you so much, and it hurts to think of a life without you in it. Even if your father does not want you, I’m glad you’re here.” she whispered to her stomach as she continued to rub it.
With a soft sigh, Kyra laid back on the bed after a few minutes of sitting and rubbing her stomach. She closed her eyes tight, while holding on to her stomach. To her, it was the easiest way to be in touch and closer with her child. To this tiny creature, her body was housing.
Within a few minutes after communicating with her baby, Kyra was in a deep and peaceful sleep, oblivious to the pair of green eyes that had been staring at her in the dark since she got into her room or the fact that tonight, so many things had changed.
