Chapter 41
Mariah looked outside her bedroom window and saw Pete standing alone in his yard, staring at the sky and looking sad. Worried about him, Mariah went outside to see if he was okay.
“Hey, Pete,” Mariah called softly as she approached him. “Is everything okay?”
Pete turned toward Mariah, his eyes filled with a mix of surprise and sadness. He hesitated for a moment before saying, “I… I don’t know, Mariah and I don’t know who else to turn to.” Mariah offered a warm, reassuring smile. “You can talk to me, Pete. I’m here for you.”
Pete took a seat on the lush green grass, and Mariah joined him, their shoulders touching. With a deep breath, Pete began to share a part of his life that he had carried in silence for too long.
“My parents,” he started, his voice trembling slightly, “when I was just a kid, my family suffered from economic crises. They believed that it was better to die than live a miserable life, so one day as I was sleeping, they closed all doors and windows and turned the gas on. It was a nightmare, I was the only one who survived.”
Mariah listened intently, her heart aching for Pete as he revealed this dark chapter of his past.
Pete continued, his eyes moist with the weight of his memories. “ I was left all alone scared little boy.”
Tears welled up in Mariah’s eyes as she grasped the magnitude of Pete’s pain. She gently placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, offering silent support.
“But then,” Pete continued, “that’s when Mr. Alston, Adam’s father, stepped into my life. He found out what had happened, and he took me in as his own.”
Mariah’s heart swelled with admiration for Mr. Alston. She knew him as a kind and generous man, but now she understood the depth of his compassion.
“Mr. Alston became my guardian, my mentor, and my savior,” Pete said, his voice steadier now. “He raised me, cared for me, and gave me a second chance at life. I owe everything to him and Adam.”
Mariah squeezed Pete’s shoulder gently. “It must have been so tough for you, but I’m glad you had someone like Mr. Alston.”
Pete managed a small, grateful smile. “I couldn’t have asked for a better father figure, Mariah. And Adam has been there for me through thick and thin.”
"Now that Mr. Alston is out of coma," Pete admitted, "I should be happy. But there's this emptiness inside me, Mariah. It's like I don't know what to do with myself when I'm alone."
Pete's confession hung in the air, a mixture of relief and vulnerability and he knew it was time for him to tell Mariah the truth. He didn't want to hide his love anymore, he wanted to be loved and he wanted to love again.
As Adam's father was getting better, Pete's thoughts had shifted. Adam told Pete that he didn't have to live a life like this now and that he wanted Pete to find love and start his own family. Adam's words resonated inside his head and now he was ready.
He turned towards Mariah, his eyes searching for her reaction. "There's something, Mariah," he began slowly, "something I've been trying to tell you for days, but I just couldn't find the words."
Mariah met his gaze, her expression soft. "Go on, Pete," she encouraged gently.
Taking a deep breath, Pete admitted, "I love Blaire, from the moment we met in that cafe, I fell in love with her."
A wide smile spread across Mariah's face, a smile that seemed to hold a secret. Pete was puzzled by her reaction, his brow furrowing.
Mariah chuckled softly. "Pete," she began, "I've known about your feelings for Blaire all this time."
Pete's eyes widened in surprise. "You knew? How?"
Mariah nodded, her smile warm and reassuring. "Well, let's just say I'm a bit more observant than you might think. When Blaire called me and told me she was heartbroken because she got rejected by the man she had fallen in love with, I knew it was you."
"And I understood why you stood her up because you didn't want to put her in danger. At first, I admit, I didn't want the two of you to be together. I never wanted Blaire to go through the pain that I feel every day thinking that there are so many enemies of Adam out there, trying to kill him," Mariah paused for a second and then spoke, "But Pete, now I know that nothing matters in love, one day we're going to die anyway, then why not die loving every single day of our lives."
Pete's cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and relief.
Mariah smiled softly, “Love is a beautiful thing, and I'm genuinely happy for you. Go get your girl before someone else takes her away from you."
Pete couldn't help but smile back at Mariah. "Now go before it's too late," Mariah encourages him and Pete nods as they both stand and Pete rushes to meet Blaire.
"Thank you, doctor," Pete yells from afar and Mariah waves her hand at him.
Pete’s heart raced as he drove towards Blaire’s house. He knew he had to find Blaire and tell her the truth. He had been such a fool to let her go, and now he couldn’t bear the thought of losing her forever.
Pete rang the doorbell and patiently waited for someone to answer the door. He was ready to face anyone now, he was sure what he was doing.
Blaire opened the door a few seconds later.
When she saw Pete, a mix of surprise and confusion crossed her face. “Pete? What are you doing here?” she asked, her voice weak.
Pete took a deep breath. “Blaire, I need to talk to you. I know messed up, and I can’t let you go without telling you the truth.”
Blaire looked at him, her eyes searching his face. “The truth? About what?”
Pete hesitated, his heart pounding in his chest. “About how much I love you. I know I’ve hurt you in the past, and I’m so sorry for that. But I can’t hide my feelings anymore. I love you, Blaire. I love you more than I’ve ever loved anyone.”
Blaire couldn't believe what she had just heard, words that he had been dying to hear felt like a dream. Blaire wanted to hug and kiss Pete right there but she stopped herself from doing so, she was hurt. Blaire hadn't forget how much she suffered but she still loved him deeply. Her feelings for Pete hadn't faded.
Blaire’s eyes welled up with tears, and she turned her face away. “Pete, you can’t just say that now. Do you know how much I’ve suffered because of you? Every time you rejected me, it felt like a knife through my heart.”
Pete’s shoulders slumped, his own eyes glistening with tears. “I know, Blaire. And I’m sorry. I was so stupid, so blind. I pushed you away because I didn’t think I deserved your love.”
Blaire turned back to him, her gaze intense. “Oh- Pete, I still love you and I think I'll always keep loving you but I can't handle any more pain, I don't want to get hurt again.”
Pete’s voice quivered as he spoke, his vulnerability laid bare. “Blaire, I'm sorry. Please...forgive me.I grew up blaming myself for everything. I thought I was cursed, that I didn’t deserve happiness or love. So, when you came into my life, I couldn’t believe that someone as wonderful as you could actually care about me.”
Tears streamed down Blaire’s face now, her heart aching for the pain Pete had carried all those years. “Pete, you should have told me, you should have trusted me. I wish you had let me in, let me understand.”
Pete wiped away his own tears. “I know, Blaire. I should have. But I was so afraid of letting anyone get close to me. I didn’t want to hurt like that again.”
Blaire reached out a trembling hand towards him. “Pete, I don’t want you to hurt anymore. And I don’t want to hurt either. But you have to understand, it’s not easy for me to just forget all the pain I’ve felt because of you.”
Pete nodded, his gaze never leaving hers. “I understand, Blaire. I’m not asking you to forget. I just want you to know that I’m here now, telling you the truth, and sharing my pain with you. I love you, and I’ll never leave you alone again. I promise you, Blaire, I’ll be there for you. I’ll work to earn your trust back. I’ll show you every day how much you mean to me.”
Blaire managed a weak smile through her tears. “And I’ll try to let go of the pain, Pete. I’ll try to believe that you’re sincere, that you won’t hurt me again.”
Without another word, Pete stepped closer to Blaire. He gently cupped her face in his hands and leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a soft, lingering kiss. Blaire closed her eyes, savoring the warmth of his touch, feeling a glimmer of hope in her heart.
As they pulled away, Pete whispered, “I love you, Blaire. And I’ll spend the rest of my life proving that to you.”
Blaire reached up and wiped away her tears, a small smile tugging at her lips. “I love you too, Pete."
Pete nodded slightly, his eyes filled with determination. “One step at a time, as long as we’re taking them together.”
Pete and Blaire found a new beginning—a chance to heal together, to build a love based on honesty, trust, and the promise of a brighter future.
