Chapter 40

Adam’s world turned upside down when Mariah, delivered the heartening news that his father’s condition was improving.

“Adam!” Mariah barged into his office, trying to catch her breath.

Adam quickly left whatever he was doing and rushed towards where she was standing.

“My love! Is everything okay?” Adam asked with his eyes full of concern.

“Your father… Adam,” Mariah’s voice cracks as she delivers the news, “he’s awake.”

“That’s impossible, it’s been years” Adam tries to control his emotions. For years Adam tried everything in his power to bring his father back to life but failed each time. He couldn’t believe Mariah’s words, he felt like it was all a dream and everything Mariah said wasn’t true.

“It’s true, he still can’t move or speak but he can see and hear everything now,” Mariah grabs Adam’s hand and gives it a little squeeze to comfort him.

“Mariah-,” Adam embraced Mariah in his arms and held her tightly. He felt so happy in this moment, he didn’t know what to do.

“Can I see him right now?” Adam asks anxiously.

“Sure, you can. But be careful, everything’s overwhelming for him since he has been in coma for years,” Mariah explained.

“I’m so happy right now, Mariah,” Adam couldn’t stop smiling, he kissed Mariah’s forehead, lifted her in his arms and twirled her around. Mariah was glad to finally see Adam smile again, laugh again and be free. She was happy to see him being himself.

His father’s health had been a cause for his concern for years, and any improvement was a ray of hope in his life. There was a time when Adam wanted to give up but Mason told him that he should listen to his heart even if there’s one percent chance of him getting better, then he should not lose hope and give up on him.

The burden that had been weighing heavily on Adam’s heart began to lift, and he felt a glimmer of relief. No one had seen Adam smile in a decade, and now here he was smiling like a little boy. No one could tell from his expressions that he was the most feared mafia boss. Mariah was glad, finally things were getting better and this meant that Adam could leave the hell he had been living in for years behind, and live a normal life.

Adam gently pushed open the door and stepped into the quiet room, his heart heavy with a mix of anticipation and trepidation. There, lying on the bed, was his father. The room seemed to stand still, as if time itself had paused in the face of this moment.

His father’s eyes were open, their gaze fixed on Adam. Tears welled up in Adam’s eyes as he took in the sight. He approached the bed, his steps slow and deliberate, and settled into the chair positioned beside it. In the corner of his eye, he caught a subtle nod from Dr. Phil, an assurance that it was alright to reach out.

With a mixture of emotions swirling within him, Adam reached for his father’s hand. The touch was warm, a reassurance that life persisted despite the stillness that held his father’s form. Their hands held a conversation beyond words, an unspoken exchange of love, understanding, and connection.

As Adam held his father’s hand, he couldn’t help but offer a soft greeting, his voice a tender murmur in the hushed room.

“Hello, Dad!” Adam smiles warmly and tears fall from the eyes of both father and son.

Though his father’s lips remained silent, Adam sensed an unspoken response in the depths of his father’s eyes. It was a moment of profound connection, a bridge between two souls that transcended the barriers of physical limitations.

“I…,” Adam’s lips trembled, “I’ve missed you so much Dad.”

In that suspended moment, amidst the hush of the room and the weight of unspoken emotions, Adam felt a surge of happiness. It was a happiness born from the knowledge that their bond remained unbreakable, that even in the face of adversity, they could share this precious moment of presence and connection.

Adam talked to his father for a little longer and then told his father that he needs to take some rest now. Adam stepped outside his room and Dr.Phil followed him outside.

Adam’s sense of relief was short-lived. Dr. Phil, approached him with a grave expression. He explained that while there was improvement, the situation remained delicate and required specialized medical attention that could only be provided in a hospital setting.

“Adam, there’s something I need to discuss,” Dr.Phil said.

“Yes, doctor. Go ahead. What is it?” Adam told him to speak whatever was on his mind.

“You’re father, he’s out of come and we can’t keep him in this room now. He needs proper care and treatment at this moment which can only be given in a proper hospital. It’s a crucial situation, in order to improve his health we need to admit him to a hospital or he might never be able to walk or talk again. We can’t keep him here forever.”

“But doctor, you know I can’t do that. I can’t put my father in any danger, no one knows he’s alive,” Adam frowned, trying to take in Dr.Phil’s words.

“We have to Adam, or else his condition might get worse instead of getting better.”

The news hit Adam like a wave of uncertainty, and he grappled with the difficult decision that lay ahead.

Despite his reservations, Adam couldn’t ignore the medical expertise Dr. Phil had to offer. The doctor’s persuasive arguments about the necessity of admitting his father to a hospital began to chip away at Adam’s initial hesitation. He understood that the risk of not receiving proper medical care far outweighed his fears of putting his father in potential danger.

Adam’s internal struggle was evident as he went back and forth between his emotions and logical reasoning. He knew that his father’s well-being was of utmost importance, but the thought of putting him in danger during this critical time gnawed at his heart. He wondered if there was any other way, if he could find a solution that would allow him to remain by his father’s side.

Mason shared his perspective with Adam, suggesting that they might want to consider Dr. Phil’s recommendation and transfer Mr. Alston to the hospital for better care.

Mason said to Adam, “Why don’t we just do what Dr. Phil suggested and move Mr. Alston to the hospital?”

“No, Mason. We can’t shift him to a hospital. What if Ariak finds out about it, he didn’t hesitate to kill his own brother five years ago and he wouldn’t hesitate now. I can’t take this risk,” Adam replied.

Adam was scared. He thought that if more people found out about his dad being in the hospital, it could be dangerous. He knew his dad was getting better, but he was worried about making the wrong choice.

“What if we buy a whole hospital and get people to help us there? We’ll recruit the staff ourselves. What do you think?” Mason suggested the idea that had just popped inside his head. As Adam mulled over Mason’s proposition, a bold idea began to take shape. What if he took personal responsibility for the situation? The notion of acquiring an entire hospital and curating a team of trusted individuals resonated with him as a way to ensure his father’s well-being while retaining a measure of control.

Adam liked his idea, “Mason, you’re a genius. Search for the best hospitals and contact their owners, pay as much as they want. I don’t care, just get a hospital under my name.”

“I’m on it,” Mason nodded and along with Pete he started searching without wasting any time, meanwhile, Mariah, Dr.Phil and Nurse Sophia took care of Adam’s father at the mansion.

The following days were a whirlwind of meetings, consultations, and negotiations. Mason’s determination was unwavering as he navigated the complexities of real estate, healthcare regulations, and financial arrangements.

Mason and Pete were Adam’s best men and they sure proved it. In just two days, they not only found a hospital but bought the whole damn thing and recruited the best doctors.

The dark clouds that had formed were finally moving, with Adam’s father coming back to life, everyone thought the war of revenge was over but no one saw what was coming ahead. Evil doesn’t die easily and the urge to destroy the other in revenge never wears off easily.
