Chapter 258 Return to the Bears
Chapter 258 Return to the Bears
I tried to stand up amidst the battlefield chaos, the weight of my newly discovered heritage heavy on my shoulders.
Morgan approached through the melee, his voice cutting through the din of conflict.
"Elena, you must take action now," he urged, eyes pleading. "Your uncle Karl has ruled as regent for too long, conspiring with Hawk to ignite this war. He wants our people to destroy each other while he consolidates power. As our rightful princess, you must return and claim your place!"
The bear clan warriors erupted into chaos around us. Those loyal to my uncle shouted accusations of treason, while others looked at me with a mixture of hope and uncertainty.
My body still weak from fighting, I leaned against Kane. "I need to make sure Elva is safe first," I whispered, "but I can't let Hawk and my uncle destroy everything."
With a deep breath, I pushed myself upright and stepped between the warring factions. My voice was hoarse but determined.
"Stop this! Our real enemies aren't each other!" I shouted, feeling Nora's strength flowing through me. "If you still trust me, give me one chance to prove peace is possible!"
Some warriors lowered their weapons, uncertainty in their eyes. Others maintained their aggressive stances, years of hatred not easily dismissed.
A movement caught my eye—a bear shifter lunging from my blind spot, knife glinting. Before I could react, Kane intercepted the attack. The blade sliced across his side, blood immediately soaking his shirt.
"Kane!" I rushed to him as he staggered.
He grimaced but managed a smile. "I'm fine... keep talking. They're listening."
Blood seeped between my fingers as I pressed against his wound. The sacrifice wasn't lost on either clan—a wolf prince bleeding to protect someone with bear blood.
Slowly, tentatively, more weapons lowered. Morgan approached, offering a cloth for Kane's wound.
"We will hear the princess," he announced, silencing the remaining dissenters.
What followed was a fragile peace agreement, built on mutual exhaustion and cautious hope. The bears weren't unified—those loyal to my uncle argued violently with those who supported Morgan. I watched siblings and packmates divide against each other, feeling responsible for this new fracture.
"Your uncle won't surrender power easily," Morgan warned as we prepared to enter bear territory. "The real battle is just beginning."
The forest grew denser as we approached bear clan territory. The air felt heavier, carrying scents of pine and something primal I recognized deep in my bones. I glanced back at Kane, who insisted on accompanying me despite his injury. His jaw was set with determination, eyes constantly scanning for threats.
"Karl rules with an iron fist," Morgan murmured. "Any opposition is crushed mercilessly. Your return may enrage him, but you're our only hope."
I nodded silently, the weight of responsibility settling on my shoulders like a physical burden.
As we entered the first village, my heart constricted. The homes were dilapidated, windows boarded up or shattered. Thin, hollow-eyed children played listlessly in dirt yards. Elders sat slumped against walls, their gaunt faces showing no reaction to our arrival.
The village reeked of despair, a sour tang of unwashed bodies and rotting food scraps lingering in the air. Muddy paths were littered with broken tools and torn scraps of clothing, remnants of lives torn apart. A chilling wind howled through the skeletal remains of once-sturdy huts, carrying faint whimpers from within—children too weak to cry aloud. Every corner bore scars of neglect, as if the very earth wept for its people.
Some villagers noticed us, eyes widening in recognition—
but not of me. Their gazes fixed on Morgan, a mix of fear and reverence flickering in their hollow expressions.
A man with a scarred face stepped forward, his voice trembling as he whispered, "Morgan... you’ve come back? After all these years?"
Morgan’s jaw tightened, a shadow crossing his face as he gave a curt nod.
Whispers rippled through the small crowd—some spoke of him as a traitor who fled Karl’s wrath, others as a rebel who dared to resist.
Most retreated into their homes, fear evident in their quick movements. Morgan gestured toward a burned-out building at the village center.
"This was our ancestral shrine. Your uncle declared the family who maintained it traitors. They were executed, their possessions seized to build his palace." He pointed to blood stains still visible on the charred stones. "Those who resisted were killed or banished."
My fingers trembled as I touched the blackened wall. These were my people—people I'd only just learned were mine. And they were suffering.
Memories flooded my mind unbidden. The years after losing Nora, being treated as less-than by the wolf community. The whispers, the closed doors, the opportunities denied. I remembered crying alone at night, Elva my only comfort.
"I thought losing everything was my pain alone," I whispered, tears tracking down my cheeks. "But these people have suffered far worse. How can I stand by?"
More villagers cautiously emerged from their homes as word spread. An elderly woman approached with a skeletal child in her arms.
She hesitated before speaking, her voice trembling. "Morgan, have you come to fight Karl again? Or have you brought more danger to us?" Her gaze briefly shifted to me, curious but wary, as if questioning my presence.
"Karl takes everything," she said, voice trembling. "Our food, our young men for his army. My grandson hasn't eaten properly in weeks."
Morgan stepped forward, his tone gentle but firm.
"I’ve returned with someone who can change everything," he said, placing a hand on my shoulder. His words hung in the air, met with skeptical murmurs. The elderly woman’s eyes narrowed, studying me as if searching for a sign of my lineage.
I knelt down, gently touching the child's head. "I won't let this continue. I'm back now, and you won't suffer anymore."
Rage burned in my chest, hatred for this uncle I'd never met crystalizing into something hard and resolute.
Morgan leaned close. "We have a small resistance hidden in the mountains. We need your leadership to rally more to our cause and overthrow Karl. They may not see you yet, Elena, but they will. Show them your strength, and they’ll follow."
I knew the path ahead was dangerous—challenging my uncle meant risking my life. But seeing the desperate hope in these villagers' eyes, I had no choice.
As night fell, I stood at the village edge, staring at the distant palace gleaming with lights while darkness engulfed the surrounding poverty. I took a deep breath and turned to Kane and Morgan.
"I'm going to remove him from power. Not for revenge, but for everyone here."
Kane gripped my hand despite his injury. "I'll be with you until the end."
