Chapter 132 The Tidesong Staff
Lyra: POV
"Lyra, wake up! I can sense Kael—they're safe but leaving the water temple!"
Stella's urgent voice jolted me from a dreamless sleep. I sat bolt upright in my bed, my heart hammering against my ribs. The dim glow of dawn barely filtered through the curtains of my chamber in Star Crystal Territory.
"When? Just now?" I scrambled to focus my thoughts, suddenly fully awake.
"I felt his energy signature during the night," Stella replied in my mind. "It was weak but unmistakable. He managed to reach out through Tempest."
Relief flooded through me—they were alive—followed immediately by a wave of concern. The message was too brief, too urgent.
"Something's wrong," I muttered, closing my eyes to concentrate. "Can you reach them again? Find out where they're going or why they're leaving?"
"I've been trying," Stella said, frustration coloring her tone. "His energy feels... obscured now. Like they've entered somewhere that blocks magical communication."
"A cave system?" I suggested, remembering Thor's mining tunnels mentioned in previous conversations. "Or maybe mountains with heavy mineral deposits?"
"Possibly," Stella agreed. "The storm energy signature is muffled but not extinguished. They're alive, Lyra. Focus on that."
I sank back onto my bed, running my fingers through my tangled hair. It had been three days since I'd returned to my family home, three days of searching through ancient texts in the royal library, discovering more about the "Star-Chosen" legacy and my role in sealing the void. Three days of missing Kael with an ache that felt physical.
"We should tell my mother," I decided, rising to dress. "She needs to know about the situation."
Twenty minutes later, I was in my mother's private solar. Lady Selene listened attentively as I relayed what Stella had sensed.
"If they've abandoned the water temple, the situation must be dire," she said, her elegant features tightening with concern. "The void corruption is spreading faster than we anticipated."
"I found references to the 'starlight vessel' in the ancient texts," I told her, "but nothing concrete about how to amplify my abilities. Just vague mentions of 'containers' and 'conduits' for the star power."
Mother's expression shifted subtly. "There is something that might help—something I've been waiting to show you." She rose gracefully. "Come with me, daughter."
She led me through a series of increasingly unfamiliar corridors, eventually stopping before an unassuming wall decorated with a mosaic of waves and stars. With a gesture of her hand and a soft incantation, the mosaic rippled like disturbed water, revealing a hidden passage.
"The family vault," she explained, "accessible only to those with our bloodline."
The chamber beyond took my breath away—not with gold or jewels, but with the subtle power emanating from various artifacts displayed on stone pedestals. Water flowed in channels along the floor, starlight dancing on its surface without any visible source.
"Our family has guarded these treasures for generations," Mother said, moving toward the center of the room. "Each Star-Chosen is meant to find their companion here when the time comes."
She stopped before a staff propped against a marble stand. It was about five feet long, crafted from what appeared to be pearlescent wood with veins of silver running through it like frozen lightning. The top curved gracefully, cradling a deep blue crystal that seemed to contain swirling water and starlight combined.
"This is the Tidesong Staff," Mother said reverently. "It has been dormant since my grandmother's time, waiting for the next Star-Chosen to awaken its full potential."
As I approached, the crystal pulsed faintly, responding to my presence.
"How does it work?" I asked, hesitant to touch it.
"It doesn't just channel your power—it amplifies it. The Tidesong Staff can focus your starlight purification across much greater distances than you could manage alone." She gestured for me to take it. "It is meant for you, Lyra. It has always been yours."
The moment my fingers closed around the staff, a shock of recognition ran through me. The staff felt like an extension of my arm, the wood warm and alive against my palm. The crystal at its top brightened, swirling with increased energy.
"It... recognizes me," I whispered in awe.
"It's bound to our bloodline," Mother explained. "Legend says the first Star-Chosen created it to help seal the original void breach centuries ago. With this, you might be able to purify larger areas."
As we exited the vault with the staff in my hands, a distant crash echoed through the corridor. Mother tensed, her eyes narrowing.
"What was—" I began, but she cut me off with a sharp gesture.
"Intruders," she hissed. "Cassius must have discovered you're here."
No sooner had she spoken than shadows detached themselves from the walls—humanoid forms with purple-tinged eyes and fingers that dripped void energy. Not humans or dragons, but corrupted entities, twisted by void exposure.
"Run!" Mother shouted, summoning a water shield around us.
I turned to flee but found more creatures blocking our retreat. We were surrounded. Mother's water magic lashed out, slicing through two attackers, but more pressed forward.
I raised my hands instinctively, prepared to channel my starlight—when the Tidesong Staff suddenly grew warm in my grasp. The crystal at its tip flared brilliantly, and I felt power surge through me unlike anything I'd experienced before.
Acting on instinct, I swept the staff in an arc. A wave of purified starlight, far stronger than I could normally produce, erupted from the crystal. It washed over the creatures, who shrieked in agony as the void corruption was forcibly purged from their forms. Where the light touched, purple stains receded, revealing the natural forms beneath—some human, some smaller dragon species.
In seconds, the hallway was clear, the attackers either purified or fled.
Mother stared at me, wide-eyed. "By the Star Goddess... I've never seen such power."
I looked down at the staff, still glowing softly in my hands. "This is what I needed," I realized, a new determination filling me. "With this, I can help Kael close the rift."
The staff hummed in response, as if agreeing. But beneath that harmonious tone, I sensed something else—a deeper resonance, like a distant call.
Whatever it was, I knew this staff was key to unlocking my full abilities as the Star-Chosen—and perhaps the key to saving not just Kael, but our entire world from the encroaching void.
