Chapter 26

After Tony laid out his murder plan, he started to sneer and said, "You know what Kurt said first when he walked into my house?"

On the afternoon of December 9th, Kurt strutted into Tony's place and said, "I can give you the money, but I'm not signing any contract. No way I'm leaving that kind of leverage in your hands."

"The way he looked so smug, I didn't even need to practice to mimic him perfectly," Tony said. "I was on the fence about going through with it because, well, he's my brother. But his arrogant, condescending attitude was just too much."

Kurt looked at Tony like he was trash and said in this patronizing tone, "You should be grateful you're still healthy, or I wouldn't even bother with you. Spending even a second with you is a waste."

He acted like Tony was just a healthy donor, and giving Kurt his organs was some kind of honor for Tony. He never saw Tony as his brother.

"You should've seen his face before he passed out, full of disbelief. He couldn't believe that I, this piece of trash, dared to do that to him." Tony laughed heartily.

"I'm not okay with this at all. After planning for so many years, I only got to live seven days as Kurt's happy days," Tony said angrily. "I was so close to success. My life was like a king's. I had money, status, respect. I even had my own kids, and they told me they preferred me, a gentle and playful dad."

"I did better than Kurt. Damn it, I should've been more careful," Tony said regretfully.

"No matter how well you did in other aspects, so what?" Robert turned off the recorder. "It doesn't change the fact that there's a demon living inside you."

Robert added, "Sixteen years ago, you should've been thrown in jail and painfully endured the punishment you deserved. These sixteen years of freedom were stolen by you."

These criminals should've been kneeling in front of Sophia in sorrow and guilt, doing everything they could to make amends.

But instead, their inner evil had grown, and they wanted to frame Sophia, making her their scapegoat, dying with grievances and hatred.

Even if Tony was caught, repentance was impossible for him.

Robert walked out of the interrogation room, thinking of Sophia, who should still be waiting in the lobby downstairs. She should know this good news.

Back then, these evil people killed her mother. Now, driven by greed and evil thoughts, they raised the butcher's knife against their former companions again.

So, funny enough, all this chaos wasn't just because of their greed and desires, but also thanks to some tarot card mumbo jumbo.

Outside the interrogation room, everyone was huddled around a computer, laughing their heads off.

"Who knew Ryan could talk like that? Did he charm his wife with that smooth talk?" Albert Sanchez chuckled.

"He looks like the ringleader of a scam gang now," someone else chimed in.

"Sophia's not easy to fool. Looks like Ryan's not gonna get his way," Ethan said.

Robert walked over, and the crowd parted like the Red Sea. On the screen, Sophia was sitting there, calm and expressionless. It was a live feed from the station's internal surveillance.

In the lobby, Ryan was holding a hot coffee, chatting away to Sophia. "Sophia, come work as a forensic doctor with us. With your sharp mind, you'd be perfect for the job. I know you could really shine here."

Sophia just stared at him, saying nothing.

Ryan kept going, "What's the emergency department got to offer? We've got high salaries, great benefits, lots of vacation, and hardly any night shifts."

He added, "Plus, the food here is awesome. You can eat whatever you want. Work with us for a month, and you'll definitely put on some weight."

Sophia still looked uninterested.

Ryan wasn't giving up. "If you join us, we've got plenty of handsome and sexy guys you won't find anywhere else. If you like someone, just let me know, and I'll set it up."

Ethan clicked his tongue. "Ryan's even trying to lure her with our male officers."

But Sophia didn't budge.

Ryan continued, "And the best part? No doctor-patient drama. No conflicts with patients here."

Emergency doctors deal with living patients, and their families might get upset with the doctors or the hospital, causing all sorts of trouble. But forensic doctors? They deal with the dead.

On the screen, Sophia finally cracked a smile. Robert caught a glimpse of it.

He turned to the group watching the screen, "You all did great today. We've solved these two murder cases, so go home and get some rest. Tomorrow, we'll wrap up the confessions and evidence and submit it."

Everyone cheered and started to leave. When Robert reached the lobby, Ryan was still at it, trying to convince Sophia. "Sophia, you have to do the hardest work and take the biggest risks in the emergency department."

"Ryan, you can head home early today," Robert cut in.

As soon as Sophia saw Robert, she walked right up to him. There was something different in her eyes, an emotion she hadn't shown before.
