The Truth Will Set You Free
Emily woke up feeling light and refreshed, the remnants of the past few days fading like a bad dream. The warm light streaming into the room painted everything in soft hues, and for the first time in a long while, everything felt right. She settled back into her pillows for a moment, savoring the sensation of safety coursing through her. "For a minute, I thought I was losing my mind," she chuckled, the sound breaking the silence of the small bedroom.
Turning her head to the right, she noticed that Lucas was not there, but this time, it did not send her heart spiraling into anxiety. The shutters were wide open, the fear that had clutched her just days ago dissipating like mist in the sun. She reached instinctively to the spot he slept in but felt only the crisp coolness of the covers. It was then she saw Gizmo, the town dog, lying at her feet, his tail thumping against the bed in a jovial rhythm.
“Good morning boy,” she said fondly, rubbing his head and feeling his warmth seep into her. As she lay there, soaking in the golden light, she let the memories of all that had terrified her in recent days float away, like leaves caught in a gentle breeze. Her fingers brushed against her eyebrow, and she noticed the cut was gone, replaced with a faint scar. Emily’s heart sank into her stomach momentarily. She sighed, anger bubbling up briefly, but she extinguished it quickly. She had faced so much worse and emerged stronger; scars were simply a reminder of her battles.
A soft bark brought her back to the present. Before she could shift her thoughts further, Lucas entered the room, a smile illuminating his face. "Good morning, my love," he said, his voice filled with warmth, as he handed her a plate piled with fluffy eggs and hearty oats. Emily's face lit up; her worries were momentarily replaced by gratitude. "Thank you! You are amazing," she exclaimed, her heart swelling with affection. Lucas leaned over, pressing a quick kiss on her forehead. “Eat up. I am going to stack some firewood until you’re done,” he said, his tone light yet purposeful.
As he stepped out of the room, Emily took a bite of the food, savoring the flavors. Each mouthful fueled her spirit, a reminder of the normalcy they were reclaiming together. The warmth of the sun continued to pour into the room, wrapping around her like a cozy blanket.
With every bite, she reflected on how much had changed in such a brief time. Just days ago, shadows loomed large, and uncertainty clawed at the edges of her mind. But now, sitting in the light, she embraced the fact that she had met the love of her life. The look did not matter anymore. Their strength, their resilience, those held all the weight. After finishing her breakfast, Emily stood up, evaluating her strength. Her body felt like new, a determined smile, she followed Lucas out to the porch.
As she stepped outside, the sun embraced her, and for the first time in days, Emily felt not just healed, but whole. In that moment, surrounded by the love of her life and the loyal Gizmo at her side, it felt like the dark times were finally behind her. Together, they could build a new beginning, one filled with laughter, warmth, and unwavering support.
Emily's happiness is short-lived when Lucas says, “Are you ready for the answers, Emily” Regretting the truth said” Yes,” Lucas gasps and says, “The Governor, Gregory, Ethan, Sherriff Bullock, and I are shapeshifters.” “The governor is my father and Sherrif Bullock is my older brother, Gregory and I are fraternal twins, and Ethan is our little brother.” Emily's mind wondered into the answers and Lucas said “It all started when my grandpa and grandmother got here, he came with a bunch of deserting Union soldiers, and their families, my grandpa found this clearing and they started building this town” Lucas said “The Navajo Indians threatened my grandfather and his people saying they were on their land! My grandfather begged and explained their situation, but the Navajo did not care. The chief named Haka, told my grandfather if you want my land, you will never leave! and summoned a curse on my grandfather and his people. that we could never leave trapping us on his land, and my grandfather's lineage would shapeshift uncontrollably.” Emily took it all in just admiring Lucas, “The Navajo also summoned demons called werewolves, to keep my grandfather's people on their feet and not able to leave the forest are look for a way out.” Emily paused and said “ok.”
“Is there a way to get out?” Emily asked, Lucas replied, “Legend on the giant rock says the first girl born from my grandfather's lineage can find the path out and guide the masses. The rock also says that Haka summoned werewolves to take away the lineage of my grandfather by killing that girl so that he would know what it's like to have invaders take something from them.” Emily said, “So where is your grandfather, and is your father the leader of your pack?” Lucas said, “My grandfather was killed, by the wolves before I was born, but he isn't the leader anymore, a power shift, happened a few years ago, and I am now the leader.” Lucas replied to Emily in shock at this point saying, “ok so that means your future lineage.”
Lucas replied, “Yes if I have a girl but there's more” Emily busted aloud “Of course there is” Chuckling at that statement Lucas said “Yep” Emily cut him off saying “Well what is it.” Lucas says, “When my daughter, is conceived are my son's daughter is conceived the rules change, the wolves will hunt her down and kill her, to stop the curse from ending.” Emily said, “That wolf yesterday that came after me is the Navajo werewolf and you guys Arnt really wolves just shapeshifters” Lucas said, “Right yes that's the gist of it.”
Emily says, “But that werewolf came after me yesterday” Nervously Emily exhaled “Are you saying I am pregnant Lucas?” Lucas shakes his head “Yes, Em you are, that's why I marked you, so my people will know at all times to protect you” Emily with what she has heard says, “I need to sit down for a minute.” Lucas says, “Our child—represents hope for all of us." His gaze softened, reaching out to cradle her face. "You created unimaginable beauty and light inside you, but it also attracts darkness. They will come for our child; they fear it.” “But we have to try,” Emily says, standing abruptly. “For the baby, For your people, For us.”
“Emily, you’re willing to take this risk for a life that hasn’t even begun?” Lucas asked, a mix of admiration and concern threading through his voice. “Absolutely,” she replied, a flicker of confidence shining through the uncertainty. “I love you, and I love our child. Whatever this is, we are in it together. You cannot protect me if you simply hide.” Lucas stepped closer, his hand enveloping hers, warmth seeping into her cold fingers like sunlight breaking through clouds. As they began to chart a plan together, Emily found a newfound sense of purpose emerge from within—no longer just a lost girl caught in a web of ancient magic and danger, but a woman standing beside a man shaped by legacy, destined to carve out their own fate.
Outside the clearing, the trees rustled softly, the whispers of the wind promising change. Something powerful and fierce stirred within her, not just a connection to Lucas, but with all that awaited them. The shadows of the past loomed large, but so did the light of what they were about to forge together.
