Caught Off Guard

Emily stirred awake, her heart still racing from the intimacy she had shared with Lucas only hours earlier. She watched him sleep, feeling warmth, she had not felt in a long time, warmth that made her pulse quicken and her thoughts spiral. It was intoxicating, and as she leaned down to kiss his forehead, a smile tugged at her lips. But the pressing urge to relieve herself pulled her from the softness of the bed and into the chill of the night. She slipped out beneath the covers and crept toward the door, being careful not to wake up Lucas who had become a vivid part of her every thought. She stepped into the main room, the fire embers casting flickering shadows against the log walls, and she felt the familiar warmth of Gizmo, the loyal dog, as he watched her with curious eyes.

“Good dog,” she whispered, the softness of her words mingling with the crackle of the fire. Emily picked up a couple of pieces of wood, choosing to toss it into the flames before making her way outside. So caught up in her thoughts she had forgotten the dangers lurking outside as her fingers gripped the board, and she removed it then opened the door, she thought only momentarily of the vow she had made with Joe, how it had lost its meaning with each passing day. Joe had become a shadow; one she could no longer bear.

Suddenly, an unsettling rustle interrupted her blissful reverie. Before she could process the sound, she felt an overwhelming sense of dread settle within her. When she stood up, the world around her shifted, the woods darkening as she found herself face-to-chest with a towering, hairy beast. Its red eyes screamed danger, and in an instant, Emily was trapped against the rough cabin wall. All thoughts of passion evaporated. Her heart raced as she caught a glimpse of sharp teeth glistening with drool, and Gizmo’s urgent barking echoed from indoors. The beast’s presence drew others; she turned her gaze just in time to see three more wolf-like creatures emerging from the shadows, advancing towards her with snarls that pierced the silent night.

Then, out of the dark, a massive, magnificent wolf with deep black-like shadows taking shape—leaped in front of her, asserting control. She watched, awe and fear battling for dominance within her. It looked at her with an intensity that appeared familiar, a flicker of recognition sparking in her heart.

In a fluid motion, the tall black wolf carved a delicate line down her brow with a single claw, and pain jolted through her, bringing her back to the nightmare. She fell to the ground, instinctively reaching to touch her wound, bracing for the worst. The smaller wolves backed away, submissively, leaving only the towering black beast before her. It howled—a sound that rippled through the forest like a warning, a signal of power. Then, to Emily’s utter disbelief, the creature transformed before her eyes, shedding its fur like a second skin. Silver glinted under the moon, and there stood Lucas, breathing heavily, eyes wide with a mix of sorrow and determination.

Emily jumped up and ran into the cabin, shutting the door behind her and standing with her back to the door. “Emily! Let me in, I can explain it all! Please!” he pleaded, his voice hoarse yet filled with urgency. Gizmo barked frantically from inside, caught up in chaos. “Lucas…” she whispered, still trying to comprehend the truth in front of her. How could he? How could he be both the man she craved and this creature of night? Confusion clouded her mind as she staggered on her feet, the wound on her brow fading from the dim glow of the fireplace light. Emily ripped the door open, “You… you’re…” her voice faltered as she searched his eyes, which now swirled with vulnerability.

“I did not want you to find out like this. I did not want to put you in danger… I thought it would be safe here, but you changed everything for me, Em. You made me feel human,” Lucas confessed, the sincerity in his voice cutting through the fear wrapping around her heart. Emily’s resolve began to tremble; every instinct screamed for her to run but instead, she felt magnetized for him. “I love you Lucas and I don’t know what to do right now”? Emily stated, “The heart wants what it wants,” he interjected, stepping closer, the wolf’s intensity still seeping through his form. “I will protect you, whatever it takes.”

With her heartbeat thundering, and Gizmo barking incessantly from inside, Emily weighed her options. She could run back to the safety of her old life or embrace this terrifying truth in front of her. Lucas—werewolf, lover, and unexpected savior—stood vulnerable, waiting for her choice. Staring up in Lucas's expressive eyes, she found her answer.

“I want you. I choose you,” she declared, stepping out into the night that now felt less daunting. The forest, alive with sounds, felt welcoming. As Lucas’s arms enveloped her, the pain in her brow throbbed still, but it only served as a reminder of the raw, wild path forward. Together, they faced the thicket of confusion, desire, and love that twisted around them like the branches above, ready to carve a new trail into the night.

Lucas shut the door and put the large board in place, sealing out the darkness. Emily knelt beside Gizmo, the heroic dog, who was beside himself with worry after the day’s tumult. “Hey, buddy,” she cooed, her hand stroking his soft fur. Reaching into her jacket, she pulled out a small brownie, her secret treat for him. “Here you go, just for you.” Gizmo sniffed the brownie, his tail wagging cautiously before he accepted the offering, settling back down onto his paws for a metamorphosis from anxious canine to contented eater. Emily felt the tension start to release from her shoulders.

It was then that Lucas, ever the anchor in her stormy seas, approached her from behind, wrapping his arms around her waist and drawing her into a gentle embrace. He nuzzled into her hair, inhaling its familiar scent. “I love you too, Em,” he murmured, a whisper of warmth against the cold reality of the day. But Emily’s heart was tumultuous, a cacophony of fear and confusion swirling within her. She found herself staring into the glowing embers of the fireplace, lost in thought. “There’s so much I don’t understand…” she began, her voice barely a whisper. “That gruesome murder today… if that wasn’t you, Lucas, then who was it?”

The memories of the chaos outside danced in her mind, shadows of violence that suddenly illuminated in the flickering light of the fire. She recalled the growls, the sounds of beasts she heard before, and her heart sank. She glanced back at Lucas, seeking reassurance in the depths of his gaze. Lucas turned her gently, their eyes locked. He noticed the drop of blood above her eye on her wound, remnants of a previous conflict. In a swift, almost possessive motion, he leaned in and licked the wound, the warmth of his tongue soothing the pain even as he made her heart race for entirely distinct reasons. “It’s healing already,” he said softly.

“But why did you slash my face?” Emily’s voice was steadier now, but the question lingered shadow on their love-struck reverie. “Because I need you to understand,” Lucas replied, his voice a low rumble. “Tomorrow, I promise you will get the answers you deserve. But first, we must get Joe. He is not safe out there.” A shiver ran down Emily’s spine at the mention of Joe, her husband entangled in the threads of darkness that encroached upon their lives. “We can’t just leave him,” she stated stoutly, refusing to allow fear to cloud her judgment.

Lucas held her gaze, an intensity in his eyes that she both loved and feared. He smiled softly as he brushed a lock of hair from her face, his fingers trailing down to her waist. Taking a step closer, he kissed her gently, the world outside fading into silence with that intimate connection. “We’ll figure it out together, my love,” he promised, as he pulled back slightly. “But for now…” His voice shifted to a whisper, rich with affection, “Let’s go to bed.”

Hand in hand, they ventured into the small, cozy bedroom tucked behind the cabin’s rustic exterior. As they crawled under the soft covers, Emily nestled into Lucas’s embrace, resting her head against his strong chest. The rhythmic sound of his heartbeat calmed her, lulling her worries into a distant murmur as the wind howled above them, slashing against the cabin's roof like the remnants of their reality. In those quiet moments, wrapped in the arms of the man she loved, the night became lighter, safer. Emily let the weight of the day drift away like the embers in the fireplace, surrendering to the comforting warmth of his presence as she closed her eyes, allowing sleep to carry her into dreams where the shadows dared not tread. Together, they would face whatever lay beyond the threshold of their sanctuary, but for now, they would rest, the world outside forgotten, and for just a moment, they were free.
